Excellent starter speakers for the new enthusiast. Can play very loud for their size and price. Makes music sound more exciting and lively than it really is, therefore it is not an accurate speaker. The treble tends to be a little siblent with some types of music, but if you like highs, highs and highs these are for you. Their bass is tight and solid again considering their pedigree. Will throw a tremendous soundstage if used for home theater. It is obvious by now that i like these speakers, yes they are probably the best bang for the buck out there. ENJOY!!!!!

I have owned four (4) Alpha A/Vs (same as the Alpha but with shielding added) for about 2 weeks and couldn't be happier. After listening to quite a few speakers in the $200/$300 range it came down to the PSBs and the Paradigm Titans. The Alphas just sounded a bit warmer than the Titans and, at $225/pair the price performance ratio has to be the best around.
I am using a Pioneer VSXD906S, an Advent Sub-10 and a home grown center with Jensen drivers.

The Alpha's overall range, given their size, is far beyond what you would expect and when coupled with a decent subwoofer the sound is exceptional.

I have had several pairs of the Alphas in various systems at home and in my office for a few years now. They are an incredible value for audiophile cheapskates. About a year ago I asked the manager of a hi-end audiophile store in Ontario why he did not carry the Alphas since he carried several other lines of products distributed by Lenbrook, the Canadian distributor of PSB. He told me that he had heard the Alphas and was fearful that if he carried them he would only be able to sell $200.00 speakers in the future. He said it mainly in jest but his central point was that the Alphas were good enough that they could cause many of his customers to question whether they were getting sufficient value for their money in buying some of the higher priced small speakers.
I have had the Alphas matched with everything from a 25 year old HK receiver to a $1500 Linn integrated. They seem to sound good with almost everything. They are probably not as revealing or accurate as many of their higher priced competitors, but they seem to make the highs sound sweet and give the mids a sense of musicality and presence that are essential to enjoying music. The bass is not all that impressive, but it beats out most of the other small speakers in the bass category. And you will be rewarded for spending a little money on good stands. If I had to summarize their overall sound I would have to use words like sweet and musical. They always let me enjoy the music.

The speakers below reflect the Alphas great performance/price ratio and are not meant to reflect a rating in absolute terms.

I've given these to my mom in moment of foolisness. She loves a female operatic voice and I had just purchased a pair of Sound Dynamics 300ti's. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I will get these back?
Really though....these have an uncanny "tangibility", excellent imaging,
great punch, and a sorely missed boxless midrange (for the money).

I find it hard to believe that their price/performance crown should be given to the comparatively shallow and edgy B&W's. But a local dealer I've spoken with prefered the latter. (I kicked his ass.)

YES! That's how to describe the B&W 302s... shallow and edgy. Thanks, Ric =).
I auditioned the Alphas, the B&W 302s and the Mission 731. The 731s are way to forward; the highs are way too harsh and loud and consequently it's all you notice. With the B&Ws, I find that I exaust myself concentrating on the sound to try to draw more out of them, and most of the time I don't succeed. The Alphas are just lovely. Smooth, subtle, clear, almost airy, never too harsh, but still provides a kick when needed.

My first pair of speakers were PSB Alphas, very good speaker for the money. Dynamic yet very bright and sibilant on the top end, overall a good starter speaker. I then upgraded to the Paradigm Mini MkIII, More dynamic smoother on the top end and even more bang for the buck, again a good speaker for the money. Why then do ask did I go looking for another speaker, well, I kinda missed the top end on the Alphas and loved the bass on the Paradigm but the highs were too bright and the bass too slow and boomy. Bought the KEF Q15s home and nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to hear. It was as if the paradigm and psb had been blended together to form a new speaker, but a much better behaved speaker. The midrange was much much better, more lucid more clear without the brightness of the PSB, the bass was much much tighter and faster than the paradigm without sacrificing any clout though. I swear to you these KEFs are out of this world, just try them. No I do not work for KEF I have just plain simply found the bargain of a life time.......

I started listening to decent speakers back in the AR 3-A days. Could never afford them, but have owned AR2's and 4x's. Polks, KLH, Dynaco, Advent etc.
Without a doubt the PSB Alphas are the best speakers I have ever owned. I couldn't believe the price. !! Am wondering if it is worth saving up for a pair of Stratus Golds !

I've owned a pair of Alphas for nearly 3 years now and every time I've felt the urge to upgrade, all I had to do was audition some sub-$1k speakers and the urge would pass. These speakers are unbeatable for their price. They are a little forward and a bit more lively than a more accurate speaker. The treble can get just a little bright on some loud passages, but is generally quite sweet. The mid-range is quite clear and musical. Others have pointed to poor bass response, but I recently found out that good positioning has a lot to do with it (I had the speakers sitting in a great position bass-wise, but when I moved things around, the bass almost disappeared---needless to say, the new position didn't last too long.)
Highly recommended.

I recently bought a pair of new Alpha Minis for $179 and I can't stop listening to them! My system consists of a refurbished Harman/Kardon FL8300 five-disk CD changer and a used Denon DRA-335R stereo receiver, all of which I procured this month for about $390 total!
Now my room is not that large and is sonically quite "hard" in that it has wooden floors and relatively bare walls, as well as two windows. But the sound that emanates from my system can only be described as "delicious" or, more professionally, "warm". This is not a top-end system of course and is somewhat weak in bass (although acceptable for all but the heaviest rock, I think), but many of my CDs have suddenly come alive. I can now detect fine details that are entirely absent in mainstream mini- and rack-systems, and the highs and mids can only be described as mind-blowing for speakers this small (and inexpensive).

Most interestingly, my CD collection has suddenly divided into two classes. Some CDs sound as if they have been transformed into "3D" sound images, while others remain "2D". For example, my classical Naxos CDs remain somewhat flat, but my Deutsche Grammophon CDs have gained depth. My Achtung Baby (U2) disc sounds shallow while my Simple Minds CDs all play in delicious 3D. The divide appears to be recording quality rather than any particular type of music, which has been revealed by a fine set of speakers.

In short, the speakers have added a new level of depth to my music collection for which I am grateful, and I don't think I could have done better for the price.
