I bought a pair of Alpha's on Dec. 16 and am very happy with them. I was able to find a demo pair for $200 Cdn. Price was my main consideration, so I looked at Paradigm Titan's, but the places I checked wanted up to $280 for a pair.
I'm no audio genius, but they sound 100% better than the 8 year old Pioneer mini-system speakers that I replaced. Now I just have to work on replacing the rest of the system! Anyway, I recommend them, good value for the price.

I have been very happy with these speakers ever since I bought them five years ago. They have a very nice sound, not too bright, and are superior (I think) to more expensive bookshelf speakers such as Mirage, Mission, and Phase Technology. They do obviously need to be paired with a decent subwoofer. It seems to me that you would have to spend maybe three times as much to get noticeable improvement in sound quality. Cheers.

I listened to the Alpha and Alpha mini. I have to say considering all of the favorable reviewsthese speakers have gotten, I felt a bit let down once I actually heard them.. Speakers are largely a
a matter of personal taste. That said, to me the high end of the PSBs sounded "harsh" and a little "spitty" at times. The Alpha
family does offer a good value, but I would recommend comparing them to Paradigm's
Performance series. The PSBs and Paradigms have pretty similar builds, in the U.S. the Paradigms
cost a little less. I found that the Paradigm Titan and Atom sounded smoother through the
high end and mid-range (perhaps this is because PSB uses a plastic tweeter, while Paradigm uses
a ceramic-metal composite). Both the PSB and Paradigms had a good amount of bass for
their size. I also prefered the sound of NHTs Super One, but those cost about $100 more.
I guess the bottom line is that it comes down to personal taste, but I wouldn't buy the PSBs
without first auditioning the Paradigm Titan and Atom too

this is the first set of speaker that i own. i'm still a student, so the price range is well within my budget.
the alpha A/Vs, i compared them to a pair of KEFs, and the sounds i hear are way more rounded and defined. i really enjoyed myself testing them at the shop.

when brought home, i decided to push them a little harder, and played songs with really deep bass, played some portishead and blueboy's "remember me", and although the sound is much better than my dad's mission bookshelf pair, i found that the bass wasn't really sufficient to the rest of the range of sounds. infact, at higher levels, i found that the speakers started to "tick" a little. maybe it was due to the insufficient drive from the amp (NAD310) but i would appreciate some comment on this. would the amplifier cause the speakers to "tick" like this when the bass is low, and the volume is high? email me.

anyway, without daunting i decided to play some paul van dyke, and man, were the
tunes delightful. i could almost imagine the man himself spinning in my bedroom.

i would recommend this pair to anyone thinking of starting a first system or beginner's. it is comfortable to the pocket for the performance.

Actually, I am using them for HT. Two A/Vs for the fronts, two for the rears and Midi center. I also use them for music until I get my Magnepan 1.6QRs. Now, if you've listened to 1.6QRs, you might say like most people that I need a sub with them. I think the opposite, I will be happy with them without a sub. However, I think you NEED a sub with the Alpha A/Vs either for music or HT. IMO, their performance is AWESOME for the money I paid. The highs are smooth and clear. I believe if you want music just add a sub and you get a great sound with little amount of money. I am using them with HSU VTF2 subwoofer which is another killer for the money. The Midi center is a really good match with the Alpha A/Vs. If you buy the Midi, try to place it vertically I think you would get better performance this way. I do. Of course my previous HT set up was better but ONLY my front speakers cost more than the 4 Alpha A/Vs and the Midi center. For the money I paid, I don't believe I can get a better sound especially when I get my Yamaha 595a receiver. I will give 5 stars because of the value/performance. Happy listening to everyone!

Strength:

Weakness:

Power hungry

OK, let me preface this review by saying that due to small apartment demands I traded in my beloved Martin-Logan Aerius to get a PSB Alpha based home theater, with Alphas, Mites, center and Subsonic 1.

Do the Alphas compare to the Aerius. Absolutely not, when considering music only. But since I was leaning towards more home theater and less music, I am absolutely thrilled with the PSBs. The sound from the Alpha is great, and in my small apartment the Sub 1 provides plently of oomph. The Mites serve two purposes, surround speakers when needed and computer speakers otherwise. Music playback is good, and the integration between the sub and the Alphas is nearly seamless.

If you are looking for a small speaker setup that sounds great and won't break the wallet, try the PSBs.

Strength:

Clean crisp highs and precise mid's, and presently surprise of the bottom end it projects

Weakness:

For what I use them for (surround speakers) I have no qualms

I found the perfect full range surrounds for my 5.1 DD system for the fraction of the price. They were suggested to me by a friend of mine so I had to demo them at a local retailer. I was so blown away because they were initially set up as mains and it produced such a dynamic sound stage and the imaging was unbelievable for it to be these tiny bookshelf speakers. For the money you can't go wrong!!!!

Strength:

midrange clarity, decent midbass thump for such a
small speaker.

Weakness:

None if used with the appropriate power.

I have owned the psb "minis" for a about a month now and
am quite pleased with them. I would strongly recommend
these over the "mites", only 30 bucks more. Im using them as surrounds and only sending them 30 watts a piece. At this input they perform fantastic. I do feel however if you tried to drive them with anything over 50 or 60 watts they would get a little spitty, as some have mentioned. At this price level I dont think you will find a more "musical" speaker. If you listen to music and HT at low to moderate
levels like myself I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I have Alpha AVs for my fronts, 100c for my center channel and Alpha Mitesfor my rears. I have found that these PSBs make for a great system for the
money. The Alphas reproduce the high end beautifully. I would recommend
using them with a good pair of speaker stands. The bass really tightened up
once I placed them on a pair of Target stands.

I've had my Alphas for about a year now, and I'm still quite happy with them. They sound especially smooth and detailed on acoustic music and well-
recorded jazz. There is a slight "sizzly" quality to the highs when
listening to some pop recordings (due in part, no doubt, to the many poorly
recorded rock CDs these days). Imaging is full and satisfying on well-
recorded LD soundtracks, but again, there is a hint of unnatural "splash"
in the upper treble, especially during explosions. All around, however, the
little Alphas are much more refined and satisfying than their $200 price
tag would suggest. A definite best buy for the budding audio
enthusuaist...:)
