PSB Speakers Stratus Mini Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Stratus Mini Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

Definitely meant for stand-mounting (we offer matching stands that can be filled with sand if you like for maximal non-resonance), it is probably the best rendition ever of a truly full-range speaker with an almost-disappearing cabinet. What its enclosure size provides is a combination of solidity for minimum resonance and a small surface to avoid unwanted diffraction effects. The latter is a major reason why critics keep citing its excellent soundstaging and imaging. The Mini is a two-way system with a 6-1/2-inch woofer and 3/4-inch aluminum-dome tweeter. The woofer's hefty (28-oz) magnet plays a great part in the bass definition. The ferrofluid-cooled tweeter has excellent dispersion and power-handling.

Strength:

Phenominal sounding small speaker!

Weakness:

None!

I bought a pair of new paradigm
mini-monitor which are fanatastic for
$285.00 in dark cherry. I was in a second
hand store and came across a nice looking
pair of small speakers on somewhat high
black stands they said psb stratus mini- I
thought never heard of them- are they any
good? They were selling for $75.00 each
including the stand! So I went home check
out the companies web site, and by the way
these are in the piano high gloss black
finish, and read the reviews they were real
good from stereophile and others. But when
I looked @ the bottom of the page @ the
retail price of $1,149.00 for high gloss
piano black + $199.00 for the matching
stands I thought wow! I also dickered with
the store owner and got them for get this
$124.00 with the stands! They said they got
them @ an auction or estate auction. I
guess they didn't realize how much they
cost- though they did say they were very
good as they tried them out. Thing is they
said they've been in the store for over a
month- the average person doesn't now psb
speakers- they know BOSE! If they were
Bose they'd be sold already- name
recognition not sound recognition as these
blow bose away for good accurate bass and
wonderful imaging! A good deal- I'm happy!
I guess I'll use these as my fronts and
paradigm's mini- monitors as my rears and a
paradigm cc-350 center channel. Both
canadian speakers should sound good
together even though the psb cost so much
more- not for me anyway.

Superb Workmanship

I've owned these for some time and have enjoyed them immensely. I listened to dozens of other brands, before buying these so I feel as though my decision to buy them was an informed one. ...Of course, no one speaker can do it all; especially one that is designed to be both compact and affordable. Nonetheless, I felt that of the speakers I considered (proac, B&W, Monitor Audio) these offered the best dynamics, detail, and accuracy.

As far as the last reviewer, I can only suggest that something may have been wrong with the pair he was listening to, like maybe they had been damaged by over-driving them, or perhaps he didn't have the "jumpers" connected in back so he may have been sending no signal to the tweeter. ..There's no way anyone with ears could conclude that these speakers suck. I can understand someone prefering some other brand/model, but to say they absolutely suck suggests to me that something was wrong.

As one last comment; I found these speakers to be better built than the others, offering fantastic workmanship and finish.

Strength:

Good Sound

Weakness:

Lack of low bass

I sold the Stratus Minis a few years back. I was so impressed with thier sound I bought the Stratus Golds to get the bottom octave missing from the minis. I think the Minis are a more musical speaker.

These little speakers, on good stands could really rock!
