Strength:
SERIOUS bang for the buck!!! Crisp, clear sound and reasonably linear frequency response.
Weakness:
Not tons of bass (May actually have more "punch" in the upper bass than some speakers with more extended bass though. Might actually be a plus when used with a subwoofer) It's not hype. These really are unbelievable for the price. Frequency response sounds pretty flat all the way through their range. Treble isn't the world's smoothest, but very acceptable to me. These things actually image extremely well. Bass is a little leaner than most speakers with dual 8" woofers, but very tight and well defined. To me they sound somewhat revealing, yet manage to make any recording sound pretty good. A nice balance. The Sonys actually compare quite favorably to my brother's PSB 800's. (these were a GREAT PSB model) The PSBs have a more extended low end and silky smooth highs. The Sonys actually sound MORE LINEAR from top to bottom though, resulting in great imaging and a huge 3-D soundstage. People really think the surround speakers are on when they're not!!! There did seem to be a short break-in period. I'm sure there's more bass now than when I first hooked them up, so give them a fair chance. I've never seen a tower speaker at twice this price that was even listenable, much less pretty good. Think they look pretty impressive for the money too. (The veneer is plastic, but somewhat realistic... nice and tall + slim) Great for surround sound. Would recommend larger surround speakers if you don't plan to use a sub. (Another pair of these or the SS-MB350H) With a sub and surround speakers set to small, the little SS-MB150H speakers are great!!! Everybody should buy a pair of these just to experience the feeling of getting a REAL pair of tower speakers for $200.00 !!! Strength:
AFFORDABLE Attractive sound quality (but I don't do music much...) not too bulky
Weakness:
rear channels could have had wall mounts other than that not much. I must admit, I looked all around town, trying to find some replacement speakers for my home theater. Let me begin by saying I don't spend a lot of time listening to music, mainly DVD's. My Onkyo receiver does a good job but my existing speakers where either free with the purchase of some component or they wer almost 20 years old from my 1st college stereo. So I started looking, here as well as in town. Seemed everyone said you need to listen to them so I went to the local audiophile shops and sorry, for my interests, $400-$600 PER SPEAKER was not going to happen. I have a friend who is a fairly knowledgeable stero guy (used to run his own shop and build his own speakers) so I asked him for advice and he basically said, I wanted at least 8" woofers and a 1" dome tweeter. So I ruled out many of the things are Best Buy and Circuit City, finaly landing on either these or a set of Yamaha's. With the Yamaha's being $300 per speaker I went with these and I could not be happier. I also got the center channel speaker and the surround sound set too, which pretty wekk matched the sub woofer I bought the year before. Anyway, these are great. With no tuning I immediately heard so many sounds coming from the rear speakers, I was amazed. Got the Bruce Willis movie, Tears of the Sun, and the battle scenes were awesome. Strength:
Very clear, loud and look excellent
Weakness:
none I was using a buddy of mines polks, and when I gave them back I bought these. Yes I was affraid I would notice a major difference when I purchased them, but once hooked up they sounded excellent, especially for the price. No, they are not polks, but they sound darn good for the price!! Similar Products Used: polk RTI |
