Strength:

nicely balanced, little (if any)coloration, work in a variety of rooms/locations

Weakness:

slightly laid back, but at this price not much else

These are good speakers, very natural and accurate, particularly in their price range. They work just as well mounted on stands or bookshelves, with the sound not being identifiable as coming from a smallish box. I used these as a second "music" pair with Yamaha amplification, and again they are a good match. Bass extension is quite good, particularly with the foam plug removed, and as earlier reviewers have indicated adding a sub frees up the midrange somewhat. I use mine without a sub and they are fine for jazz or classical, although not as "attacking" on anything fast. Staging width and depth is excellent with information being presented as is, without color or artificial add-ins.
I use mine with the grills removed, they are slightly forward this way. For the price 5 stars, some "professional" reviewers have commented on construction quality concerns, no problems with my pair which are now over a year old.

Great sounding speaker. I listen to various sorts of music, and the MX2's satifies to my needs.
I recently bi-wired the speakers [using the Van den Hull Cleartrack cable] and then i heared the true power of the Tannoys; loads of bass, beautifull midrange, very three dimensional sound.
I also use these speakers for my home theater together with: Tannoy MX1[rear], Tannoy MX centre and Jamo SW410e [subwoofer]all attached to a Yamaha rxv596 receiver.

Strength:

Sonic clarity, smooth frequency response, quality construction

Weakness:

Very little documentation; no mounting options

Here's the home theater setup:
Tannoy MX2 fronts
Tannoy MXC centre
Tannoy MX1 rears
Tannoy PS110 sub
Marantz SR5200 receiver
Panasonic RV31 DVD player

The MX2's can hold their own as a stereo pair without a sub. When I first got them, I forgot to turn the sub on and not notice until the movie was over. However, for loud music, they come up a bit short by themselves. I recommend removing the foam from the rear port if you're not using a sub. They're not the least expensive for the size but the performance is stellar.

Strength:

Price, clairity of sound, size,

Weakness:

lacks base (expected from bookshelf)

I recently puchased my first home theatre/audio set up:

Denon 1801
Tannoy MX3 mains
Tannoy MXC centre
Tannoy MX2 rears
Paradigm PDR-10 sub woofer

I shopped around for 2-3 months, demoing everything I could, for the price the Tannoys are the best speaker in terms of acurate reproduction of sound I have found. I also auditioned B&W (602s2,601s2,lrc6s2) and Paradigm minimonitors, and prefered the Tannoys to all of these even irreguardless of price.

Try before you buy, but I love mine.

Strength:

Tight delivery, clear mid-range, good sound staging

Weakness:

Slightly bright for my taste- but something that I can live with!

I have just got this pair after some shopping for a budget hi-fi system. During the search, I have auditioned the a few systems and was very impressed by how the mx2 performed. In the end, I got this together with the Marantz cd4000, NAD c320, Audiolab Topaz interconnects for slighly more than US$ 800.

There is very good sound staging- jazz and classical music benefited most from this. One could feel the ambience of the recording room and the clarity was just first rate. For vocal performances, these speakers reproduced them exactly the way they were meant to sound. Music reproduction is tight and warm, with drums and percussion coming out with the right blunt punch. The fatigue-less excellent sound imaging makes me just want listen to these speakers for the whole day!

On the slightly weak point, the speakers are a little too bright and some pop CD that I used turned to sound a little too much on the trebly side. However, this could also be due to the pop CDs themselves as they tend to sound "over-produced". But this is something that I can absolutely learn to live with.

A very good buy, indeed.

Tannoy MX2 VS KEF Cresta2

I own both of these speakers. Note that this is a comparsion ONLY BETWEEN the MX2 and the Cresta2.

Both are good speakers in certain sense.

The MX2 has more solid bass; not only that the bass is smooth it is also well controlled.
It more suitable for pop and disco music. Because of it poor sensitivity stiff cone movement,
the volume control knob has to turn up higher to get the same loudness level as the Cresta2. The vocal
quality is good though not as transparent as the Creata2.

The Cresta2 has certain qualities that resembles high end speakers. The Cresta2's midrange is liquid
and transient passage decay smoothly. There is also a kind of holographic sensation on vocal materials. Tiny sound
in the recording is distinctly projected.

The Cresta2 is also very particular with the electronics used. When hooked up to an AV amp(Kenwood)
the sound delivered is just like any cheap Japanese speakers, however with amplifier like the Aragon and Krell
the Cresta2 really shines. However the woofer cries for help when fed with Disco music; it seem as though the cone
is going to pop out!

The Mx2 on the other hand is more tolerant towards poor quality electronics and recording as well. Though it
has good tonal quality, its high damping ratio can sometime makes music sound muddy and less involving.

In summary, as mentioned before both are good speakers and the liking depends on personal taste.
The Mx2 plays pop music with punchy clean bass whereas the Cresta2 shines on clasical and vocal music.

I also owned the Aegis-ONE and this will be the next comparison against the MX2 and Cresta2.

Strength:

good solid deep sound with plenty of warm bass, help to get rid of a too 'technical sound' or tinninies, can cope well with high volume, infact are much better when I turn up my amp.

Weakness:

definition/separation is not excellent

a good solid deep sound for all kinds of music but I think you should buy floorstanders if you can afford them and have room - even my brother's fairly cheap eltax cd205s sound better I think even with his tight technical set up - but I must admit it, these did cope a hell of a lot better than others I heard that were bookshelfs especialy wharfedale's and jpws' in a similar price range. - really what the main selling point for me was that they didn't mess up and reveberate or get tinny all over the shop at higher volumes like your average mini/midi system speakers. btw - like all good speakers these need to be broken in by playing loud when you first get them.

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

The air coming out from the rear ports produces vibrations
at strong and deep bass

I bought these loudspeakers 3 days ago and they are amazing! I know they need some time to really open up and give their best, so I'm looking forward to an even greater sound. They are connected to a Nakamichi AV-7 receiver, with
4 m Jamo 2.5 square mm cables with banana plugs. I placed them on Vogel's 60 cm stands, a few inches off the wall, with the foam bungs taken out.
After 15 minutes of instrumental music, the bass started to kick in, it was a great surprise for me to hear so much bass from such speakers (the mid/bass drivers are just 6").
The placing near the wall helped the strong bass reproduction. I actually did a test to see how low they can go and so I generated a series of sine tones (-6dB), ranging from 55 Hz to 40 Hz ( I did that on my PC with Cool Edit 2000 sound editor). I found that they go as low as 45 Hz without losing their strenght.
I was also impressed by the detail of the mids and highs (wich sound very clean, no harshness). The voice reproduction is superb, it's like there's someone else
in the room with me. I could hear subtle details in movie soundtracks or instrumental music an I was impressed by their accurate reproduction.
They may be considered pricy by some but I don't think you can get better speakers for 300$.

Strength:

Coherent midband; natural highs (no ringing)

Weakness:

It gets a little distorted when the volume is too high

I went through the process of two-years' in-depth research of the best possible bookshelf speakers, for my needs and my price, ok? It was an ardous process, done through a lot of auditioning, reading audiphile magazines, visiting websites, reading other consumers' comments (AudioREVIEW.com is one), you name it.
When my favorite audio store in Tokyo made a sale of Tannoy MXes (as much as 50% discount), I grabbed the chance. I wasn't disappointed.
The Tannoy's have a very delicate balance. Obviously, their forte is in the midrange. There is simply a coherency and purity that I consider somewhat rare at this price point.
I am completely satisfied, especially at the price.

Great speaker, compliments the rest of the MX range superbly. They are currently setup as my rear (effect) speakers. Excellent sound range and clarity. I was considering the BW speaker range, but found that the Tannoy's offered a very close alternative at a more reasonable price.
