As good as the hype if not better. I haven't heard a better sub $1000 bookshelf monitor. Great in an office or a living room. Add a good sub woofer and you have anything as good as you'll find for less than $2000 period. |

Strength:
Clear and fast in mids and highs Imaging Great with low power tube amps
Weakness:
Low bass Needs a subwoofer for orchestral and organ These are terrific bookshelf speakers. Besides all the positive comments in previous reviews I would add that these speakers are great when it comes to reproducing realistic acoustic piano sounds. I'm a jazz nut and keyboard player myself, so realistic piano sound is a must. Also, the clarity and presence in the mid and high range is excellent. This is a big help to those of us baby-boomers who are losing a little of our high-end hearing. And if that isn't enough, you can play the Titus with very low power tube amps. I have driven them with my AES Super Amp (20 watts) with no problems whatsoever. These speakers are a bargain at list price. If you can find them used on eBay like I did they are the steal of the century. |

Strength:
Musical speakers like all Triangles.
Weakness:
Not the last word in bass Purchased the Triangle Titus 202 for my office system from Sterophile review and Class B rating. This is the best $500 speaker available. Great highs and mid-range. Very Musical compare with other speakers in this price range. Equipment used: NAD 541i CD NAD C320BEE Kimber PBJ (WBT RCA's) Kimber 4VS Bi-wired Partington Super Dreadnough Speaker Stands Forget the Absolute Sound Budget system. This is the one to own. The Titus /Partington Combo makes the difference. One word on the stands, absolutely the best for the money in the world. Not available in USA, but Partington sold them to me directly. At this kind of money U must be kidding. They should price these around $2500...probably sell more of them at that price too. A finer speaker you will not find, under $1500..or more. Goes lower, and more accurately, than any other speaker of it's size, and I do mean any.Detailed clean highs, not bright at all(previous reviewer needs to blame his sorce for his complaint of these being too bright).Grain-free mids. Best of all, imaging is nothing short of tremendous..ditto soundstage.I have the bottom filled out with a fine sub(Athena AS P400),but only for the lowest(under 35) of frequency needs would anyone need one. Truely an astounding value...made for tubes,IMHO,as sensitivity is quite high. Slap on some Norah,Tracy,a little Leo Kotke, and you will be thrilled.Spend some cash on good wires..c'mon...U know U need them. And all U (overpriced)B+W owners..shed the mundane, and try these. Ability to play "Complex", "Loud" recordings. I apologize for the latent reply, however you know how new year's can get. Regarding your questions; I have found the Triangle Titus speakers to have a "Forward" sound, it's not at all laid back. I would say their sound is similar to Polk Audio LSI9s, but with less low-end extension. They fair very well with live recordings, as they seems to mimic the instruments in a very real manner. I notice this specifically on recordings that utilize the piano or guitar. The speakers shine on crisp vocals, and do both male and female voices extrememly well. I do caution you, with any higher end speaker they are very revealing specifically with hiss, which I have in my system in leaps and bounds due to the onboard power supply being shielded poorly. I find these speakers are better for normal listening levels, and are not suited towards high listening levels. Although, what I consider normal is most likely quite high to most and likewise with high listening levels. The speaker's weakness seems to be in their ability to reproduce "Complex", and loud recordings. I feel they are not appropriate for that. If you enjoy jazz, classical, vocal, country, and softer rock, you will absolutely love these speakers. Do keep in mind their -3db is at 58Hz, and as such, if you are a fan of deeper bass, of which I consider <50Hz, you may wish to mate these speakers with a subwoofer or two crossed at ~60Hz with a 12dB/octave slope. As for the brightness issue; although I am not really a proponent of "Breaking-in" audio equipment, I did feel that the speakers lost their overt brightness quite quickly, although perhaps I became accustomed to a metal-domed tweeter. I find that metal domes can appear bright if you currently utilize silk-domed tweeters. However, this "Sacrifice" is quickly over-shadowed by the incredibly realistic sound of a metal tweeter when playing back recordings that utilize metallic-treble producing devices i.e. guitar, symbals, etc... I prefer the accuracy of a metal tweeter; personally speaking of course. Similar Products Used: Many. |

Fabulous soundstage, speed and air, emotional impact of music presented. I doubt you can do any better for anything near the money (price above in UK pounds). The only possible alternative are MMG's but this is based on hearsay as Maggies are not available in England.(But Maggies will be harder to drive...)
Weakness:
None at this pricepoint (or any for that matter!) Sure you can do better: What are Martin Logans for! Don't believe the hype - these speakers are better! If your taste in musical presentation is for an exciting and involving listen that conveys the emotional inpact of the music these are a must-audition. For those who, like myself, love electrostatic, planar or ribbon speakers: you will probably love these! If, however you like a polite, laid back sound you might find these a little forward. Certain reviewers have noted that the treble can be overly bright, leading to concerns about fatigue. This is really due to poor set-up and lack of break-in. These speakers do need a long burn-in time (as do many others). Correct toe-in is essential: you may not believe the difference a couple of degrees makes! (Try angling the speakers towards you rather than having them face straight ahead, in other words.)You will also want decent source and amplification as these are pretty revealing, besides it would be a waste not to hear what these can do! I use these with a Linn Classik and find the combination works well: an overly bright amp would not be the way to go with these. Read some of the professional reviews available online for more detailed information on the sonic charachter of these speakers: they present an accurate representation which I will not replicate here! If your speakers (& system) cannot bring tears to your eyes (& not tears of pain at the awful sound!) you are not experiencing what hifi can and should do! Do yourself a favour and listen... Strength:
Imaging, accuracy + realism, great looks, the Triangle name, bi-wire/amp-able
Weakness:
Does not seem to support banana plugs, thumb screw terminals are a bit difficult to turn if you're fingers are thicker than a pencil. After some wait time, I received the Triange Titus 202's I bought on eBay. Trust me, there was no shortage of nervousness despite the sellers assurance of a perfect product. I picked them up from my friend's home in the US (I am Canadian) and, after a quick once over, I concluded the speakers were, in fact immaculate esthetically. In my hurried state to hear them I proceeded to disconnect the 6ohm speakers from my friends Panasonic "Boom box" and hook up the Triangles. From the moment I hooked these speakers up, I was agape. They sounded incredible. The imaging was some of the best I've ever heard. Hotel California had never sounded so good! Each and every guitar pick, drum hit, snare brush and vocal was reproduced in such a way that I could only describe as what it must have been like to be at the recording concert. I then tried 9am by ATB (Techno/trance) and was taken back by the amount of midbass these small speakers had. Of course the midrange was as fast an AK47. The best part of all of this was, is that the speakers were sitting on a bed, hooked up to a crappy amp/receiver/tuner/cd with 22ga! They were going to sound amazing on my Denon at home with proper stands and 12ga! When I got home my hopes were confirmed, they had a sound that was nothing short of amazing. Detail, detail, detail. They resolve like no other sub $1000 speaker should. Luscious midrange What bass was there was tight and tuneful. If you value accurate, lifelike, fast sound, these are for you. Fit and finish are good for the price. They look nice in faux cherry finish, although more wood finishes would be better.
Weakness:
May need a sub fill in the lowest notes. Reveals weaknessess in your system. Don't accept banana plugs. I just bought these Triangles to replace my NHT 1.5's which my Golden Tube Audio SI-50MK2 integrated could not drive properly. I had read a rave review on them in Stereophile and they placed it in class B of their recommended components. Man, was I not prepared for the kind of sound only multi-buck speakers could produce. I thought my old NHTs sounded good, but these Triangles were way, way better in every respect. I listen mostly to jazz, classical, vocal, classic rock, etc. Every disc I put in revealed things I've never heard before. No speaker this inexpensive should be as resolving as these. The tweeter sounded analytical without being harsh and sizzling. Everything had an accuracy and uncanny ability to sound lifelike. Shirley Horn sounded like she was performing in my listening room. Her slight lisp was very pronounced as was creaks from her piano bench. Just amazing! They are ruthless in that they will let you know the deficiencies in your system. As other reviewers have said, these speakers sound great even at low listening levels. I would catch myself looking up from my book and marveling at the surprising detail that came out. Bass although slightly less robust than my NHT's was tuneful and tight, never a one-note boominess or thickness. I could easily follow basslines from Ray Browns bass. Imaging with these babies was downright 3D. I could tell where the musicians were standing! The soundstage extended way beyond the sides and beyond. These speakers were dynamic and were able to play passages going from soft to loud quite easily and effortlessly. The cone is a treated pulp and resulting in a fast sound and free from any overhang. These are highly efficient speakers and would prove easy to drive by any amp, even tubes and SET's. If you're looking for an inexpensive speaker that resolves and images like muy expensivo speakers, you owe it to yourself to audition these. Similar Products Used: NHT 1.5 NHT SuperZero/Sub PSB Alpa |
