Strength:

Fast, open, airy dynamic sound. Nice looking.

Weakness:

Lacks punch, bass. Bad with complex instrument harmonics. Does not handle harsh or brighter recordings too well. This is the real world, not all recordings are perfect and speakers should be designed to deal with this.

Glenn from Seattle described the Titus very well. It is a good speaker. But I think all the reviews and hype are a little overdone. This speaker is definitely not in the same league as B&W CDM1 NT's. Although both are Stereophile "B" rated the 2x cost B&W is more refined and coherent. Instruments with complex harmonics like violins are lacking on the Triangle. The Titus is not good on every type of music. Bright or tipped up music is not handled well. Even with tube-like SS amps. Music guided by a bassline will loose it's direction with the Triangle. Compared to the Titus, B&W DM 601 series 3 doesn't doesn't make musical mistakes and sounds very good on all types of music. The 601's also have more dynamic punch. At $450 the Triangle has some serious competition with the B&W 601's. But the Triangle has lots of strong points. They are dynamic although lighweight sounding. They LOVE acoustic guitar. Acoustic guitar really is incredible. They play at low volumes, the sound is open and airy and is not boxy. Most music will sound pretty good but these speakers have higher driver distortion and driver break up is not as benign as B&W kevlar design. But if you're looking for a clear, fast speaker with good imaging and without the refined, somewhat warm British sound the Triangle should be on your list.

Look at Paradigm (lots of bass), and B&W DM 601 series 3 as comparable but different sounding speakers.

Strength:

Clean, fast sound. Lush midreange. Beautiful and classy looking. Inexpensive.

Weakness:

Lengthy break in.

I took a leap of faith and bought the Titus 202 based on Sam Tellig's stereophile mag review and stereophile's class B rating. These little speakers are the real deal. The 202 are in a classy cherry veneer and have the new triangle tweeter. The wife thought they were the best looking speakers I have owned to date, and I would agree. The knuckle test show a well built solid cabinet. The crossover is unique that it is crossed at 6khz making the woofer do a lot of the work. Does it work? You bet. The highs are crystal clear and the mids are very lush and liquid yet detailed. Soundstage is large. These are also very acurate speakers. Triangle builds their own drivers and they are very high quality. I would compare them to the scanspeak units in stiffness and sound quality. The 90db efficency makes it easy for almost any amp to drive, the speakers take a while to break in though. Good electronics and cables are a must. These speakers will expose your weakest link. Some people and reviewers have described the sound as "electrostatic like." I have never owned M.L. or quad speakers, just heard them at tweeter (owned maggies though, planner-magnetic)and would have to agree with the quickness of the speaker. I have not experienced any of the harshness/brightness other people have experienced with the older modles. Maybe it's the new tweeter or my room. I think these speakers are a tremendous bargin and are very musical and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Equally good for audio or home theater, Very natural sounding, especially on complex sounds such as piano, or female vocals. Great soundstage. Plays well at low volumes. Very detailed without listener fatigue.

Weakness:

You have to take a leap of faith to buy, because you will probably have to mail order them. Expect to wait a month before taking delivery...it took five months to get mine, but they are the upgrade EX model. Crossover design does not lend itself to upgrade of components. Triangle website could be better, it was not done by a native english speaker, infact, it was probably done by a very poor english speaker.

The reason these cost so much is because I spent the extra $100 for the upgrade EX model, making them 'Triangle Titus 202 EX'. I believe the model year for the 202 series is 2002, but you could not select that year on this site. I originally got the standard Titus in 'cherry' contact paper finish with carbon baffle by mistake. The EX or 'ebony' series is really nice, it has a deeply stained cabinet of real wood veneer. The EX baffle color is a beautiful dark reddish-brown which would remind you of a 1940s bakelite radio, or fine leather furniture. The new 202 has an upgraded and refined tweeter compared with the XS line...the dispersion lens design was optimized on a computer to reduce directional lobing. I took the tweeter apart to examine the resonance chamber behind the dome...It could have been deeper, with some felt to dampen resonances...like a top quality Vifa. The tweeter did not have ferrofluid to cool/dampen the voice coil...you could add your own, but if you did'nt like the sound change it would be very difficult to remove it. These 2 upgrades, especially a deeper resonance chamber would have made the tweeter flawless. The dome is coated with what Triangle calls a 'Nextel' finish...I believe this to be a evaporated diamond coating designed to further increase the rigidity of the dome. The woofer is flawless...cast basket, vented pole piece, kapton former and the cone material is the key to the natural sound. Strand oriented cellulose pulp (paper) is doped for mechanical stability and long term consistency. I have always considered hi-tech cone materials such as carbon fiber or kevlar to sound unnatural...which is why i skipped brands like B&W. Hi-tech materials do play louder before they distort, but the trade off is a loss of low level detail...mid band sounds such as vocals become subdued at low volumes. The woofer suspension is another wonderful surprise...It is a latex coated cloth, so it will never wear out, unlike foam surrounds. Even the finet rubber surrounds which are made by a company called 'Dr. Kurt Muller'(used by Dynaudio, Theil, Vifa etc.) will dry rot and decay. These speakers are not as efficient as I have read, do mate them with a high quality amplifier with lots of dynamic reserves. You pay about $100 premium in the USA for Triangles compared to Europe, but they are worth it.

Strength:

Fast, detailed, great with vinyl. Easy to drive. Pay double and you''''d still be impressed

Weakness:

Not party shakers, and can be hard at high volume. Take forever to run in.

Make no mistake: these are great speakers. They take forever to run in (mine still have a little way to go) but the rewards are ample. If what follows seems a little critical, keep in mind that I''''m reviewing these as proper audiophile speakers, not as 300 euro or less cheapies. They are that good. OK, to the biggest negative: play these loud at your peril. The balance is always dynamic, but push up the volume to serious party levels and the liveliness turns hard. They will go loud with poise, but not to room shaking levels. Then again, these aren''''t the speakers you''''d want to do that to anyway, they''''re about serious listening. Bass is enjoyable, tight, and controlled, but if you want the walls to shake, these aren''''t the babies to do it. You could add a subwoofer, if you really enjoy destroying the balance of your system. Triangle have gone heavily into home cinema, but, as with any brand of speaker, you are always better turning off the add-ons when it comes to stereo. A final negative, if it is one. If you like warm and lush, go elsewhere. These are direct, detailed and enjoyable, but if the original production is brash and barely listenable, as is the case with most Oasis cds for example, that''''s what you get. On to the positives, and there are several. Detail is superb, though not clinical as with studio monitors. The Titus 202s are lively and enjoyable at all times, making other speakers sound pedestrian by comparison. Most of all, though, there is the soundstage. Much has already been said about Triangle''''s approach here, so suffice it to say hearing is believing, and you won''''t the first few times you do. I don''''t think I''''ve ever heard speakers that can spread the soundstage quite so far around the room. Triangles really are special when it comes to that. One final plus: connect up your vinyl, and you''''ll soon be appreciating how good records can be. If you have a turntable, definitely give the Triangles a listen, they bring out the best in what is almost defunct technology, and that best leaves many cds dead in the water.

Strength:

Imaging. Detail

Weakness:

Like all small speakers- bass.

I ordered a pair of Titus from my local dealer today. I have to wait 4 to 5 weeks for it to arrive. The Titus is as good as the critics and reviewers say. I had my heart set on a pair of Mission 780 before I saw these speakers on the Stereophile recommended list. I figured I at least try the Titus so that I don’t get buyer’s remorse later. I was in the store for an hour listening to these small speakers and could not believe the incredible sound it produced. I sold off my ADS 1290’s recently and do miss the deep bass. But the Titus is much more musical.

I bought this speakers base on the Stereophile magzine's review and I want to get a inexpensive two way mini monitor with high effeciency for 2A3 SET amp.
I would have to say this little speakers are truely wonderful. Maybe it is their non corssover design, this speakers have high end resolution, speed, openess, imaging, staging! You will need to spend alot more for better sound. Maybe the Reference 3A MM De Capo(also is a crossover less design at $2,500.00) can match or maybe surpass this little speakers! I can live with their bass output also. It also can be bi-amped for even better sound!
You can get high end sound with low end budget! Truely high end mini monitor speakers! It is a super bargain and a giant killer!

Strength:

Extended highs, incredible midrange, build quality, great tonality, soundstage, imaging, everything!

Weakness:

No low bass, if that's important. A sub is helpful.

WOW, these small speakers are truely unbelievable. They have done wonders for my system. They are very reveiling, which could be a problem for someone who has marginal amplification and source components. But given high quality associated equipment and a good recording, the Triangle Titus xs will sing with the best of them.

Please don't let the price(list is $495, not $595 as stated above) stop you from auditioning these for your audiophile system. I can't imagine any speaker at $500-$1000 sounding any better. These speakers absolutely smoke the speakers I listed above, cost 1/4 of what the Clements or MTDs cost and are only slightly more expensive than the Paradigms. The Triangles are almost the exact same size as the Paridigm Minis, but are severals steps higher in performance.

If you have a smallish room, don't need low base or have a quality sub, and listen to vocals, jazz, folk, small group, etc. you should put the Triangles on you short list of speakers to audition.

Highly recommended!

Strength:

Amazing sound stage and imaging, point source works well even with cheaper electonics and as front home theater

Weakness:

well as they say lack of bass is a gimme

I bought these as front speakers in a home theater, and was best impressed playing cds through the system which uses a sony DVD and a Technics 5.1 receiver. Having two high end systems as above,I am suprised at how well they compare with the cheaper electronics of my home theater

Strength:

Clear, bright sound, full of detail, good value for money.

Weakness:

Sub advised for full warm sound and HT use.

Bought 4 of these speakers in a HT system after an advise from my dealer and listening to some others in the same price range. My room is not that big so I wanted a speaker that's not too big but with a clear bright sound and for easy use with the NAD power. It is combined with a REL Quake subwoofer and a KEF centerspeaker. Now after listening a few months, I think the center should be more bright to make a better match with the Triangle's (maybe I'll switch the center)
The HT receiver is a NAD T760 and with the T550 DVD/CD player it's a good bright combination in a normal room. Mostly used in stereo. Price was DFl 399 each. Built quality is very good, good ferm connectors, nice cabinet (for the wife).

Weakness:

Bass

This is a very special speaker. It give me the most detail I've ever heard and its sound is so tranparent that make me want to listening to more music. I would say these are two out standing areas of this speaker. I use it as my third sytem in my bedroom and it's not difficult to set up the speaker for a good sound. I own a lot of components but I choose to write a review for this product. If you're looking for a speaker in this price range, give this speaker a shot. Unfortunately, the new model is comming.
