I say the monitor 7 is the best sounding speaker I have ever owned. I have had Bose, Klipsch, and Pioneer and I like this the best. Very even sound. Good deep bass(a lot better than I thought it would be) and great punchy mids and hi's. Can however be a little top heavy so you better have them on a good even floor. I love this set of speakers.Wish I had bought them sooner! |

Strength:
Neutral, effortless, full-range, non-point source sound.
Weakness:
In the price bracket that one can get these speakers for, there are no weaknesses. Some reviewers have mentioned build quality here but since I never have the desire to take the grill off of the speaker, this is not an issue with me . I have been seriously collecting good Hi Fi equipment since the early sixties. In the past I have owned AR3a's, Bozak Concert Grands, Klipschorn's, Bose 901's, AR9's, & AR9LS's. I am currently AR3a speakers that have been modified with Dynaudio drivers in my main home theater room. I wanted a really good set of speakers for a secondary home theater setup in my master bedroom. Given the Ubid & Ebay pricing of the Wharfedale products, I decided to try a pair of MFM-7's. These are without a doubt the "best bang for the buck" speakers that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. They present a very wide and neutral soundstage accross the entire wall. The sound is wider than the speakers are apart and the placement of the performers is extremely realistic. The sound is absolutely clear and lifelike from one end of the audio spectrum to the other. If you are looking for great speakers and you are on a budget, without reservation, I highly recommend these. Low Price. It amazes me how much the reviews vary for these speakers - people either love them and think that they are a great value, or they despise them and think that they are junk. IMO, the truth is somewhere in-between the two extremes. At $1,400 a pair, I can''t imagine anyone who would think that these are a good value. At $300 a pair, which is what most people pay, then they dramaticly improve in value as the competition narrows. Maybe I got lucky, but the fit and finish on my speakers was very good. Yes, the grills are flimsy, but how often so you remove the grills and put them on? I tried bi-wiring and bi-amping these speakers with little appreciable difference in sound quality. Room acoustics and speaker placement also have a big effect on sound quality. As they are rear ported speakers, the bass becomes muffled and muddy sounding if placed too close to a wall. Mids and highs are decent for a speaker of this price. I think that there are better bookself type speakers in this price range for these frequnecies. Overall, for the price I paid, this is a good speaker. How many floor standing, full range speakers can you buy for $300 a pair? I have moved them to my bedroom system where they do an adequate job. A good amplifier and wiring will help the sound quite a bit. Similar Products Used: Infinity (several models), Marantz, Magnaplanar, Pinacle, etc. |

Bass,Crispness and overall reproduction
Weakness:
none I was one of those that jumped in without listening to these speakers. However, I was pleasently surprised to find that these speakers were as good if not better than I had anticipated. I was really pleased with the overall sound reproduction and I listen to everything from Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain to Coltrane's Ballads CD to Pat Metheny's Still Life Talking CD (my favorite). Strength:
A tremendous value! Very neutral, laid back kind of sound. Can fill a very large room with good quality sound -and nice stereo image.
Weakness:
Fairly cheap construction... especially the front grills. They start to get a bit shrill at high volumes. Not very efficient... don't expect to get a great deal of clean sound without a fairly hefty amp. After finding these "too good to be true" at the ubid price, I found only a little trouble in paradise. That said, the sound was quite good - especially for the price. These are a very neutral speaker - not hard hitting speakers like the Klipsch or JBLs. These are more of a "classical music" speaker... very smooth especially at reasonable volumes. Hard core rockers or action movie fans might be a bit disappointed. The build quality was only fair. I'd have been really unhappy with their construction if I'd paid anywhere near full price for them. That said, they have exceeded my expectations and are certainly a bargain for someone who has "Lincoln" taste in sound equipment and only a "Ford" budget. Also, had damage in shipment. Ubid was very responsive - FEDEXed me a new one and sent me a return label for the defective one. Overall, I'm an enthusiastic fan of these speakers - probably the best value on the market today! Good range and sound quality for the money. Clean Bass, Large Soundstage, Excellent support from IAG America.
Weakness:
None at this price, except maybe the grills. I bought these speakers at uBids for $89ea and at this price they're hard to beat. Unfortunately they arrived damaged but I contacted IAG America (www.iagamerica.com) and they took great care of me and replaced them. Similar Products Used: Wharfedale MFM-5, Modus 8 |

Strength:
Clean, transparent sound. Bi-wireable. A joy to listen too!
Weakness:
The MFM7's are reasonably attractive, but considering that Wharfedale has been manufacturing speakers since the 1930's, overall construction should be better. First of all, I would like to address my comment in the "weaknesses" section. I feel Wharfedale does only a fair job in applying the vinyl wrap to the outside of the speaker cabinet. Other manufacturer's, who have been making speakers not nearly as long as Wharfedale, do a much better job. I also question the quality of the Fiberboard material used to make the cabinets. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is quite common to other manufacturer's. What density is the fiberboard in the MFM7's? That aside, an even more crucial problem with many of the Wharfedale towers is their "packaging". The styrofoam protection used is much too thin, making the heavy Wharfedale tower speaker an easy target for shipping damage. I originaly ordered a pair of Sapphire towers, but much to my regret, they arrived at my home with a crushed corner. To uBid's credit however, my money was promptly refuned and the speakers picked up by UPS at no cost to me. Similar Products Used: Pioneer CS-88A's, Dahlquist PDQ26's |
