Like a couple other Wharfedale reviews, I also bought these on an online auction for a relatively cheap price. From the same place, I also bought the Modus 4, the Emerald 93's, and these MFM-7's. What got me to buy the speakers was that Audio listed the retail price of these at $1399.00/pr and thought that $450 is a great deal for them, seeing as how I love the emeralds and the modus 4 bookshelf speakers (i have those 2 pairs hooked up to the computer). The MFM-7 is definitely a fine speaker, although not worth the price they're asking for. It's a real clear, detailed, laid back speaker. I was pretty surprised at the amount of bass that came out of these towersk, while it doesn't go as deep as Definitive Technology BP30s (same price, MUCH better if you like bipolars), it does have a lot of presence. These are great for both music and movies, with good imaging, smooth treble and midrange, and good bass (although adding a subwoofer would give you much tighter bass). Overall, a great speaker that I wouldn't spend more than $800-900 a pair for, but definitely a cut above what Best Buy sells.

Strength:

soundfield.bass.imaging

Weakness:

none yet

i bought these speakers at an auction site
they are a lot better than i thought they would sound.
i use a Rotel 970bx for my hifi and a Yammy rxv596 for my HT.there is a massive amount of bass on tap if required, both my amps are bass heavy anyway.
i use a source splitter box between the amps so that they dont sense each other when driving the speakers.these speaker are really impressive and at the price i paid for them it must be the hi fi bargain of the year.
the play loud and proud yet are subtle enough at low volumes.i suppose that the sound will improve with more usage.i could not be happier

Strength:

I also tried these and thought thew were VERY lackluster, can't think of a strength.

Weakness:

Cheap build, drivers, non dimensional sound, grills as you know.

I could not listen to these very long, annoying fuzzy sound, hissy tweeter noise, don't know what the hype was wiht these, must be Ubid employees trying to boost sucker sales, worked for sucker me but they sent the wrong color, THANK YOU GOD, and I could not get the Fed EX man back here fast enough to pick them up. I have the Wharfedale series
Rubiance now and they are much better sound, and they are only 2 way speakers!!! That ought to speak volumes. Look elsewhere, this ones a dog... People must be rating them good only because of their cheap price, my 20 year old Jensens sounded better. You get what you pay for...

Clarity; Highs; Sound reproduction

Weakness:

Grills (who cares; Ubid shipping charges

These are really a great deal. I can only assume that those who give these one star received damaged goods from Ubid (that would not be a surprise). The sound reproduction is crisp and clean. These speakers are easily comparable to speakers in the $800 - $1200 range.

Hint: I bi-wired these and it made a huge difference.

Strength:

price, looks and very good midrange

Weakness:

for $300? None

These cannot be beaten for $300. Ubid and Wharfedale may have a few left and if you can get them at this price I wouldn't hesitate.

There are better 3-way towers like PSBs and Paradigms, but you'd pay at least $1000 for them ($1400 is the retail price on the MFM-7s). Definately a great purchase.

Strength:

Price, Bass

Weakness:

Grills of course, otherwise not much at this price.

For $289 you can't go wrong with the MFM-7s. While they aren't worth the $1400 retail they're listed for, they're a good speaker and hold their own very well against speakers around the $700-1000 range. Now against the Mani-IIs they of course fall short, but the Mani's were $3500.

Probably the best deal on floor standing speakers going at this time. Why someone would give the MFM-7 one star after buying them at this price is idiotic.

Strength:

Price (if you don't care what you get in return for your money), Bass (if you don't care how accurate it is)

Weakness:

Idiotic reviewers trying to rationalize their mistake of spending good money on these. Materials, including: grills, drivers, finish, low density fiberboard, ubid. Sound reproduction, including: lack of three dimenisionality, highs.

For $289 you can't go wrong with the MFM-7s unless you have any concern for sound quality whatsoever. $1400 retail! Right! They're a good speaker and hold their own very well against speakers around the $700-1000 range if all you are doing is weighing them.

Probably the biggist scam on floor standing speakers going at this time on ubid. One star for sound and build quality at any price, even pseudo-British Chinese speakers. Complete Joke and Complete Waste (unless you're an idiot)

Strength:

Your friends who know nothing about audio will be impressed by their size and three drivers.

Weakness:

Dead, undetailed sound, pressed cardboard cabinet coated in shiny plastic, cheap plastic drivers, unreachable customer service at ubid.

Please don't get sucked into buying these things. After ubid adds shipping, handling, (nd extra profit)they are not a good deal. Mine came with shipping damage and ubid is nearly impossible to get any satisfaction from. Shipping damage is really part of the deal because they are made of such cheap material. They came with a corner pushed in and the exposed material looks like pressed cardboard. Frankly, for the price I didn't really even care about the damage as long as they sounded better than the 15 year old speaker I was replacing. Well they don't even come close. I biwired and broke them in and they still sound dead. There is no soundstage and no detail to the music. I am still working with ubid to get rid of them. I have since purchased Dynaudio 72's. Wonderful! Three dimensional and detailed; they sound like music. Given, they are in another price range but they are worth every cent more and then some. The bottom line is that the Wharfdales are terrible and not worth the money because they ruin your music (which what you buy speakers for, right?)

Strength:

Price, Decent sound, good midrange, good looks

Weakness:

none at the price

Good quality for the price. One of the best deals on floor standing three ways on the market today if you can get a low bid on Ubid.

Just discount what the idiots who give it one star say. For 300 or so dollars you get a system that is of good quality and sound. Not Totem or Dynaudio, but still a great deal.

As someone has said before, these are closeouts from the Wharfedale attempt at getting into the US market two years ago. That's pretty much the whole story as far as I can tell. As for the one star idiots, they've got far too much time on there hands until High School starts again.

Weakness:

Cheap and ugly grill; poorly designed feet

I'm annoyed by some of the reviews in here ... especially some (but not all) reviews from those that hate these speakers ... they have a serious lack of objectivity.

I realize that what we hear (or rather how we hear it) is subjective and therefore not everyone will like the same thing. However, I just don't understand what all the harsh criticism is about. If you want a set of speakers that sound like a thousand bucks, spend a thousand bucks. If you only have $180 to spend on speakers, understand that you will get what you pay for. But I digress.

On to my review of these speakers ...

I recently made major upgrades to my home theatre system. The Audio portion of my new system includes:

- Denon AVR 4800 Receiver/Pre-amp
- Denon POA 5200 Amp
- Klipsch KLF 30 Front mains (Bi-wired)
- Klipsch KLF C7 Center channel
- Klipsch KG3.5 (4) Surround channels
- Klipsch KSW-15 Sub-woofer
- Moster cable Z-series speaker wire for all 8 speakers

Retired to my bedroom but with speaker upgrades:

- Denon AVR 2400 Receiver
- Denon AVP 2000 AC3 digital processor
- Wharfedale MFM7 Front mains (Bi-wired)
- Klipsch KLF C7 Center channel (Ubid.com started selling these just 2 mos after I bought my other C7 for $400. I got this one for $269)
- Wharfedale MFM7 (2) Surround channels
- Monster Cable Z-series speaker wire for Front mains
- I do not yet have a powered sub for this system

I also have a digital receiver and speakers in my computer room but will spare the details as they are nothing special.

I originally bought a pair of the MFM7's to replace a very cheap set of Sony speakers that I was using in my bedroom. I was so pleased with these that I immediately bought another pair for the express purpose of playing these in 5 channel stereo on my Denon AVR2400. The sound stage is stunning. I play a LOT of classical music and when I close my eyes and listen to my favorite classic on these speakers, I almost feel as if the orchestra is in my room.

These speakers lack bass so get yourself a powered sub if you like heavy bass. They can also be a little bright so tone down the treble a little. And if you're using these in a HT with a center channel, take the time to adjust the channel outputs. These speakers are rated @ 91db/sensitivity and 6ohms/impedance so they will overpower an average center channel with 8ohms/imp even if the sensitivy rating of the center channel is the same or a little higher.

I have experimented a bit with these and have found that bi-wiring is a must. I wired the A and B outputs to both, front speakers and still need to purchase cables to bi-wire the two surrounds. Additionally, (as with any good sound system) you should use good speaker wire. I prefer the pre-assembled speaker wire with banana plugs (Monster cable Z-series is the only one I've tried but I'm sure there are many more brands).

The only things I really don't like about these speakers are the cheap grills and the feet. In fact, the feet made me so mad that I have graded these speakers down one point because of their cheap construction.

As I have shown in my main system, I am not afraid to spend $$ on good speakers. And make no mistake, these are nowhere near the quality of my Klipsch KLF 30's. But for $79/ea I have yet to see or hear their equal.
