Crappy Speaker Grill (I wouldn't want to be left out on this...)

I, like so many before me, purchased these beasts on ubid. I took a leap of faith based on your reviews, and I have been AMPly rewarded! I hooked these puppys up (bi-wired as recommended) to my new JVC-RX9000VBK, put in some Black Sabbath and watched things vibrate off my what-not shelves. Thundering yet clear bass, full rich mids, and crisp, clean highs as well as some slight ear bleeding. I am happy to say that not 5 minutes into the song, I was getting calls from people in my apartment asking me where the live band was.

I am still waiting for all the digital monster cables to arrive and I haven't turned the speakers ALL the way up yet (waiting for the beasts to burn in a bit before I try and take care of getting rid of that old peeling paint on the ceiling), but I am sure that these beauties can only give me more if I feed them cleaner signal.

A note on ubid; I am, of course, the president of ubid, so don't listen to another word...I paid $149 each for these guys...My bill came to $400 and change...the shipping charges where extravagent to say the least. That aside, I got them the next day, in good shape and I have absolutely NOTHING to complain about where ubid is concerned. I wished I could have heeded the other reviewers advice not to pay more than $90 each, but what the hell, I am in hog heaven.

I must say this last thing; What the HELL were these guys thinking when they designed the grills??! I didn't think twice about tossing them the minute I was satisfied I wasn't returning them. Go figure. Definitely hold out for the rosewood cabinets though; The extra weight is much more sauce for the goose! These mosters look great, sound better, and disturb the neighbors without even breaking a sweat.

Weakness:

sound quality; ubid shipping charges

i've had the mfm-7 for 12 months or so. i use a denon2800 to drive them. i also have the wharfdale modus center and a pair of mfm-3 for surround speaker. for a sub, i use the bic-v1210 (which i think is pretty decent for the money also). i paid about $750 for all six speakers from ubid; $950 with tax and shipping (UPS ground). aside from the high cost of shipping, this is a good deal for the money considering that high end klipsch and polks cost this much for the fronts alone.

i think the speakers are average sounding. i bi-wire the front speakers. they are not as sharp as i'd like, and to me they sound a bit flat or dull. the bass is good, but i am so glad i have a sub sinse i get most of my deep rumbling out of it. when i play the matrix on my dvd player, it definitely sounds cool and loud, but when i go to circuit city and listen to it there on their systems, it sounds alot better. i live in a small house and perhaps the living room is not large enough.

i'm on a budget and figure for the money i paid i got a fair deal for decent/average speakers. i've never heard of wharfdale before, and i bought them based upon reviews i read here. perhaps this was too big a leap of faith...especially in light of the fact that some people have had problems with ubid (i fortunately did not) and the rumors that these reviews are perhaps biased and written by people with a conflict of interest.

my friend has bose acoustimass speakers, and he paid about $1200 for them. not only could a thief put them in a knapsack and walk away, but they don't sound superior than the wharfedales.

Strength:

Good sound, great value, nice rosewood cabinets.

Weakness:

Grills of course.

Great value and quality sound for the price.

Break in time is very important as they sound very poor right out of the box. I hooked them up to my Carver CM-1090 intergrated amp and a few hours of being played at a moderate volume improved them immensely. Within a week they sounded just great. Fine imaging, bass and highs. If you put them on the carpet don't forget (like I did) to put the spikes on the bottom to anchor them. It makes a definite difference in the clarity of the sound.

Like most speakers placement will take a bit of time so play around awhile. I wouldn't have paid the list price of $1400 for these, but at $280 they're probably priced under a third of what they are really worth. Highly recommended at this price.

They get fives for their value to quality ratings.

Not as bright as I might like

This is a great buy. For the money I couldn't go wrong. The bass and hi's are really decent, and while they're heavy once you get them placed correctly they absolutely sound great.

I'd like to have tried the Mission 773s Ubid has, but I'm content with my MFM-7s and have them hooked up to an old Luxman receiver.

grill, broke when i took it off but they look pretty stupid with the grills on anyway.

Well for the price you can not go wrong. Im just a poor college student and im more than happy with speakers. If you bought them at the list price of $1400-$900 then you got screwed but if you bought them under $400 then you got a good speaker at a good price.

First and most important bi-wire or bi-amp these speakers, it makes a difference. Also if you are not going to run at least 100 watts to them don't get them, they need the power.

I have looked for a new set of speakers for about a year and i have not found one set for under $300 that could hold a candle to these speakers.

i got the black speakers from ubid that said they were 22lbs. Trust me these speakers are 47lbs and they are the same as the rosewoods, the only difference is ubid messed up the weight so i didn't get quite as screwed on shipping as other buyers.

Working with ubid on the otherhand was a hassle, i spent the extra money on the next day shipping because i was leaving in 4 days to go home for christmas. Well ubid sent one speaker and lost the other. After repeated phone calls and much hassle they got it to me 3 hour before my plane left.

with all the hassles the speakers were still worth more than the price i paid and im a happy customer.

Strength:

very accurate and clear.

Weakness:

not designed for higher volume levels.

These speak's look oh so cool (39" tall, one driver on top of another all the way from the floor up, they look like a 4-way traffic light!) sound reproduction is near flawless at volumes above the noise level of your average one-keg party. if your party is larger than one keg of beer, you need more wattage than these speakers can handle.
I have a 140 watt onkyo amp (70x2), and even with the bass and treble features flat, the MFM7's begin to distort and crackle at 50-60% gain.
However, I only paid 125 each, and they sound way excellent at medium volume levels. I intend to hang on to them for a while.
conclusion:
To beat this speaker be ready to pay a lot more.

None so far...

Well, for $99 a pop I don't think you can go wrong. Just hooked 'em up and they sound good to me, but what do I know!

I will say they sounded pretty impressive as I listened to my Jackyl CD right out of the box... I then put in Godsmack's new album "Awake" and then... I could hear some weaknesses, like lack of mid and DEEP bass. If you really want to drive your system to it's FULL potential, seriously, go buy Godsmacks new album pop it in and you'll see what your systems capable of... Really.

That album is pretty dynamic and will push any speaker (system) to it's limit. I won't know if these baby's are the real deal or not until they are broken in (still not sure if that whole subject is myth or fact, like I said what do I know!).

But you know what? Speakers are speakers, and yeah, there are probably plenty of better speakers out there that sound 10x better than these, but at what cost? So if you got a couple of hundred bucks to experiment, go for it and try these, and if you don't like 'em... Oh well, I do... and thats all that matters. 8)

Ciao!

Strength:

I think it's an all around wonderful sounding speaker. Nice deep bass, very smooth highs.

Weakness:

cheap grille, I heard it snap when I was taking them off...but I didn't find anything broken, I'll probably throw the grilles away anyways.

I think these speakers sound great. I have a very controled environment for listening to music, and these speakers just sound awesome to me. I may not have the normal budget of an audiophile, but I have a decent ear. I think these speakers have great highs, I read some people say that they sounded rolled off, but I think they sound natural and not all hyped up.

These things sound horrible straight out of the box, I left mine on for 3 days, and that seemed to be good for break in time. They sound fantastic now. I can only think that the people giving these bad reviews must have had something wrong with their speakers. Either that, or they didn't allow enough break in time. They sounded very distorted in the mids, and highs straight out of the box, but now they are very smooth, detailed, and accurate. For 300 dollars, this is a great deal! Oh, and I don't work for Ubid either.

I would give these a five for overall rating, but these aren't the best speakers in the world, I've heard better...and can't afford ten grand for speakers. For the money, I don't know if they can be beat. I think they sound great!

Side note, I have the rosewood version. I don't know if that is true about the black ones, but these are the 47lb. each speakers.
