Strength:
Bass, treble, esp. seperate tweeter housing.
Weakness:
Thin mid-range, could be 50w more powerful for the price. Repairs very very expensive if needed-Be Careful which amp used!!! Bought these second hand, and they had taken a bit of a beating prior to my purchase, but with some shop repairs they were a good buy at $800 (about $350 US). Unfortunately I ran them off an amp I later found to be rated at 530w and blew both mid-ranges and tweeters! $600 repairs later they are working fine, slightly underpowered for my liking however. Quality is exceptional, especially treble and bass. Mid rande needs some equaliser augmentation but I recommend these speakers if you can get them for around $400 US. |

Strength:
Price-to-Performance. Excellent overall response (pretty flat frequency response ... not too bassy, not too treble-y). Appearance is nice (dark cherry veneer). Great value.
Weakness:
Cheap speaker grills. I purchased these Wharfies on eBay with the slightest amount of use. I have only had these for about 2 weeks but am more than satisfied (esp. for $140/pair). These British towers have enough bass (I believe ~40 Hz at -3dB sensitivity) to work with my music (mostly rap, hip-hop and a little bit of rock & jazz). They don't rumble like a sub obviously, but for my bedroom, they thump just the right amount. The cabinets are real wood veneer which I appreciate over MDF with faux-woodgrain paneling. I also like the isolated tweeter pod, although one of my tweeters buzzes rarely (possible due to the recording?). In any case, for the price I paid, I refuse to believe I could have gotten a better pair of speakers. Strength:
Good base, reasonable high end
Weakness:
Falling apart after a couple of years I bought these speakers to replace an old pair of B&W 110s. I was attracted by the price and the fact that they were floor standers instead of booksehelves. Initally, I was impressed with the bass and reasonable high end, However, even though sound quality was reasonable the build quality is a disaster. One of the tweeters no longer works unless I press the tweeter dome with my finger. It then works after a fashion but is very tinny and I don't want to stand beside it all night. Recently the other speaker has starting buzzing, as though the components have come lose. Any sign of volume and everything is drowned out by a bee swarm-sound. Reading the other reviews it's obvious the build quality is poor. I was thinking of cracking them open with a view to rewiring but have decided to by new pair of KEF codas. I would hesitate to recommend these speakers again. Similar Products Used: B&W 110s; KEF Coda |

Everything about the sound and cabinent build.
Weakness:
grilles are underbuilt and Wharfedale badge is cheap, be careful when dusting I bought these speakers in May of '02 and have been nothing but impressed with Wharfedale. I had bought the Modus 2 bookshelf speakers 2 years before I purchased the one-sixes and loved them so I knew what I was getting into. The bass, mids, and highs are unbeatable at the price paid. As for the review posted below mine, maybe you should try getting a better reciever or power supply, I have thrown everykind of music at the one-sixes and two's and put the bass up all the way and have never had the problem of bottoming out with them. I thought that they were going to come flying right out of the cabinent one time during the movie Gladiator during a war scence, I took the grills off and boy were those drivers moving, but not bottoming out. In my opinion it is harder to bottom out the inverted surround rather than a conventional surround. I also have some infinity Studio Monitor speakers and they can not handle half the bass the Wharfedale's can without bottoming out, the infinities use a conventional surround, and driver size is identical. Overall the Wharfedale speakers sound as good the Paradigm Monitor 7 series which are priced at around $600 per pair. Wharfedale, ya just can't beat 'em!! Strength:
Good highs Solid mids
Weakness:
The woffers would bottom out when bass hit to hard because of inverted surround I bought these speakers when i only had a little cash and i was not excpecting much but i came to discover that the sound quality was outstanding. The speakers were good at hitting deap acurate bass and the highs were hard to beat, impossible at the price. I used my wharfedales for movies and music they were great in both acations. If you are looking for a lot of bang for the buck these are for you. Similar Products Used: wharfedale shaphire 89 |

Cheap Grills Just a super quick follow up from my last 2 posts. I've been enjoying these screamers for over a year now, and I am satisfied. Coupled with the Modus Monitor 7, the Modus Center Channel and a JBL sub, the combination is close to unbeatable at the price range. I listen to everything from chest caving R&B to soothing brazilian beats. The speakers pick up a wide range from the sound spectrum without splattering them together at hi volume. Couldn't be happier with the set up. They are being pushed by HK 7000 cranked to about 20dB when the wife and kids are out. Still the best deal out there besides the 99 cent big mac deal if you can find it. Similar Products Used: Polk Audio |

Clear precise highs, mellow mids, tight base.

Come on for $100 each!!!!!!.....NONE Well I've got to say I'm impressed. I thank the people who wrote reviews before me for leading me in the right direction. Like most I purchased these from UBid, and was leary because in general "you get what you pay for". Well not so fast, in this case that saying just dont fly. I dare anyone to show me a set of speakers, for $200 or even $600 that sound as good as these, probably cant. I am not an audiophile, probably didnt even spell it right, but I do enjoy clean highs, tight base and mellow mids and thats what Wharfedale has given UBid. They must have made a deal with the devil!!!! And now we can take advantage of it. I dont want this review to sound like hoo raa for UBid, because they definately have their faults, however its not these speakers. So anyone who may have reservations abour the Modus 1-6, if you can pick up a pair of these at anywhere near $150 each, do it!! You will be happy you did. |

Strength:
Crisp-open soundstage, great mids and detailed bass
Weakness:
Maybe the design of the tweeter should of included some kind of protective shild? No kids,so not a problem I decided to wait for a while before reviewing these speakers to allow the break-in period I have heard about that is required. I feel that many of the reviewers should do this before giving these wonderful speakers a bad review. My experience with these speakers has been positive. I was never a big Wharfedale follower but now I know why Wharfedale has such a big following. When they first arrive I was impressed with the build quality and the rosewood finish, considering the price. They initally sounded a bit "closed" or "boxed" in soundstage, but after a few weeks of playing on a regular basis they opened up to a wonderful open soundstage comparible only by much more expensive speakers costing much more. I find the tweeters sweet and warm yet detailed, the midrange snappy and great punch with the woofers considering their size. Is a sub needed?....Of course, most speakers do with home theater! For those people with-out a sub for HT they do not know what they are missing out on! For 2 channel they have a balanced sound that is not "in your face" ...just right. As far as Im concerned these Wharfs are a best buy even with U-Bids horrible shipping rates! Similar Products Used: Yamaha 200xt,JBL,MIRAGE ECT.... |

Strength:
Very clear and detailed treble and midrange.
Weakness:
Somewhat muddy lower bass. Waiting for deathray to shoot out of tweeter. :^) Ubid is known for frequently overstating the weight of its products, resulting in excessive shipping charges. Well, I caught them accidentally listing these 40 lb monsters as 8 lb. I decided to take advantage of the situation. :-) The price for the pair was $168 + $22 s/h. So how do they sound? Pretty darn good! The sound is very clear and detailed in the treble and midrange, especially if you bi-wire them. The tweeter definately looks strange (who designed it, the Borg? :-)) but sounds sweet. If you have heard the Wharfedale Emerald series, the sound quality is about comparable. They are a significant step up from the Wharfedale Diamond (7.2) Anniversary speakers, which I have in my office. I would say the bass is adequate, but not subterranean, and it does sound a bit muddy at the very bottom of its range (not unusual with ported systems). The Wharfedale website claims these go down to 30hz but does not state the degree of rolloff (e.g. -3db or -10db). My guess would be that they go down to about 40hz with a -3db rolloff. If you need lower bass, you may want to consider the Sapphire 89 or the new Pacific series. They may not compare to ultra high-end speakers costing thousands of dollars, but for the price I paid I am VERY satisfied. Similar Products Used: Wharfedale Emerald 93 and Diamond Anniversary. |

Weakness:
Bright in the highs, lack of definition in mids. I purchased these speakers, as many here have noted, because of the price. I was looking for something that would provide acceptable sound quality until I could afford something more. They sounded pretty bad out of the box but have since opened up considerably. I've added floor spikes, bi-wiring, and repositioned them many times, each has again improved the sound quality. I will however, have to agree with some others here... no matter what I've tried, the mids get a bit lost and the highs are a bit bright. I have a vintage Marantz amp and have found it to have a very "warm" sound over the years but with these Modus One.Sixes it loses some of that feeling because of the lack of definition in the mids. I will continue to work with them and repost if my opinion changes but I don't currently think I would recommend them. |
