Strength:

Great housing, crisp sounds, solid/tight bass. Great Buy!

Well, after a few weeks, the Wharfedale Modus One.Six has been broken in after some considerable short amount of time. As posted earlier, the mids were flat. Well, I am back to update what the speaker has to output. The highs remained crisp, bass tight and solid, and the mids are warm. Overall, these speakers are just fantastic. I couldn't believe how these speaker sound when used in my HT setup. The One.Six are powered by my Nakamichi AV 7. I have the Wharfedale Sapphire 83 as the rear surround, Modus Music Center as my center channel, Velodyne CT100 as my sub. All these components are connected by AudioQuest Turquoise and Triburatires for the video. My dvd player, the most recent addition, is the Nakamichi DVD10. The Nakamichi MB10 is my cd player. If you find the Wharfedale One.Six, get 'em. 5 stars period.

Strength:

TIGHT BASS, PIVOTING TWEETER, AESTHETIC DESIGN. OUTSTANDING PRICE.

Weakness:

cheap plastic grills, veneer finish, shady mids

For under $300 for both the pair and the center channel, you will be hard pressed to find warmer full range speakers. At this price range it is pointless to disect the speaker's strengths and weaknesses. What other brands are in this price range-KLH, SONY, JVC and some of the other lower end speakers? The critics reviewing these speakers review these speakers as if they are on the top tier of all speakers...they're not. While evaluating we can't lose scope of the nice price tag the 1.6s carry. Ofcourse it's not going to perform like an Audiophile grade speaker, but pound for pound these speakers will give you more than what you bargain for. They under $300.

I've used these speakers for my front and center channel for the past year now. I purchased them online like everyone else at the right price. The design is beautiful beneath the cheap grills that enclose it. Spikes are included but these speakers won't hop around too much unless you keep them maxed out. They under $300.

The most rewarding strength is the tight bass which never lingers into a low endless hum. If you are into the classic heavy, chest caving boom, hook up a sub. In home theater, you'll be engulfed in the realism of a volcano erupition or the firing of a canon. They under $300.

The tweeter pivots to suit your placement. They are bright providing accurate whispering voices and sharp piercing screams on command. They are under $300.

Unfortunately I have to agree that the mids are sometimes lost. There is a small but noticeable seem between the HIs and LOWs. Ofcourse the matching center channel fills this gap tying everything together completing the package. They are under $300.

I'm not a wealthy man, nor do I claim to be an audiophile. These speakers are an intermediate between my first pair of fisher speakers and my dream B&Ws. They do the job that I need them to do and I am happy with them. I've auditioned Klipsch, Infinity and JBLs at Circuit City, Good Guys and Best Buy in hopes to find them as "Open Box" purchases just like all of you have. This is a fine dollar to value purchase, probably the greatest since the 99 cent Big Mac special. Bottom line they perform - They are under $300.

Strength:

- Great Price
- Solid Low End

Weakness:

- Weak Mids
- What is up with that Spinning Tweater?
- Plan on a new "BIG" center channel to fill in the GAP.

First, as we all know, these speakers are DIRT cheap. I picked up the set for 200 bucks (delivered to the door).

So, I am not going to put them up against the big boys, because, well, they are priced at "Best Buy's" JBL price.

So, for the price, they pretty much beat the house down.

When I first got these, I was living in an apartment with a fairly small living room, and was pretty neutral with the sound. However, when I moved into my new house and opened these bad boys up in my new theater room 20*22, they wailed as they had never wailed before.

Tight lows, good highs... However, they where missng a little of the presense out of the mid range.

For music (my tastes are of Rush, Yes, Toto, Metallica, Priest, Slayer, etc.) and they do quit nicely. For anything else, well, they work.

However, the main use of the room is for watchin' movies, and well, they do real good (keep in mind the price please) job. However, to fill in the ever important mids, I had to do some scourin' to find a new center channel to make up for the so-so mids on the mains.

Overall, I have enjoyed them. They fit the bill, and oh yeah, THEY are cheap! So please, be weary of the "AudioPhiles" lookin' for B&W replacements for 200 bux. Lets be realistic, these are 200 speakers that kicked my Infinity's (At twice the price) out of the room for good. And would compete and beat anything else in their price range.

Later..... and enjoy.

Strength:

Look nice, directional tweeter, holds the carpet down

Weakness:

Did Wharfedale really think no one would notice the midrange is missing?!? The Bass is too boomy, the midrange isn't there, the highs are only 'ok'. The grills are made of some weak material. I would never recommend these speakers to anyone.

I picked these babys without thinking much, but soon i discovered why people worry about buying things over the internet: Because sometimes you get e-screwed.
But it was a good 200 dollar lesson. Not all Wharfedale's are bad, I have a pair of Saphire 89's that sound better than I expected, but they're still budget speakers.

One star for value rating because I feel cheated.
Two stars for overall rating because they could be worse.

Strength:

strong bass and good support from IAG america.

Weakness:

break in period sucks

Got the rosewoods from Ubid for 127 each plus s/h. Took forever to get a decent price b/c people were really bidding them up. Wharfedale has discounted these from 1400 per pair to about 350 or so U.S.,but wont send them Stateside from their site. So don't pay a lot for these. Other sites have them for 800 a pair,e.g.,Tatumelectronics etc. Nice heavy cabinets and good build quality. Hate the break-in period which lasts about 20-30 hours. Really scared when first arriver b/c bass all muddy and mids very overowering. Finally almost overnight one evening they opened up and now play great. Very srong bass from a speaker this size. Often dont even bother w/ my Subs on just music. A great relief after the Opals which have no bass at all unless stuck in corner w/ lots and lots and LOTS of power thrown at them. The modus is a good speaker for this kind of money. You wont get this kind of fullnes from best buy JBL's,etc. Although if you like your bass real thumpy instead of tight you may enjoy ather brands. The Wharfedales plat true, so your recordings will vary a lot but good speakers are supposed to be that way IMHO. I love my modus now, but really really like my MFM-5's too! For only being half the modus 1.6 size they really stand up and scream. I am keeping my eyes open for Ubid to have the MFM-7's for sale. MFM lacks a little of the mids but have better highs than the modus series and mabey a little tighter bass. You wont be dissapointed w/ these modus speakers but do give them time to break in b/4 judging them. For under 300 a pair you will never find a speaker this great at a brick & morter store. Ubid ROCKS

grilles poorly made,poor quality manual.

I DISAGREE WITH DAN ON HIS VIEWS ABOUT STEREO IMAGING OF THIS SPEAKER YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFULL WITH POSITONING AS IT
IMPROVES SOUND QUALITY AND IMAGING DRAMATICALLY.THE SPEAKERS
NEED A BREAK IN PERIOD OF 2 WEEKS AT LEAST BEFORE THEY REALLY COME ALIVE.I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THESE AND RECCOMEND THEM STRONGLY.THANK YOU WHARFEDALE AND U-BID FOR GIVING US SUCH A GREAT DEAL.

Strength:

They play LOUD, with good bass.

Weakness:

imaging, quality.

I purchased these from U-Bid. Actually I bought 2 pairs. I gave one pair to my son. He really enjoys the bass. I had one small problem, one speaker had a wire disconnected from the tweeter. The service company for Wharfedale was really good and helpful. The first thing I notice after hooking the speakers up was the sound level. They played louder then my other speakers, this only means one thing they are more efficient then the other speakers. The bass was solid and extented to the lower frequencies. The mid-range is flat, actually could be a little dull. The highs are clear and crisp. One disappointment is the stereo imaging, it lacks. I tried to reposition the speakers and it didn't help much. My old Acoustic Research and the Kef coda 7 have better imaging.
Last month I looked at the wharfedale web site and I see that they have a special on these speakers, the price dropped from $745 each to $368 a pair. What is up with this picture? I guess if you got these from ubid at 157 each you got a ok deal, any more then that you didn't do so good.
Overall I am pleased with these speakers. I am a little annoyed with the imaging, but I am sure if I play with positioning I could improve it. If I payed more then $500 a pair for these I would be disappointed but at $300 a pair these are a good speaker.

I purchased this speaker for under $300/pair and they sound awesome. I would not try to compare these speakers to the high dollar ones (because I will never buy $2000 speakers), but they are the best I have heard for the money.
