Strength:

Great sounding speakers, the best pair of speakers you can buy in it's price range. Bi-wire, and look great.

Weakness:

None at all. Except that they sound to good, sometimes you can hear mistakes in the recordings(older DVD movies).

Great product if your looking for a great pair of lager bookshelf speakers go for'em, Not to many companies can even come close except for NHT, and Paradigm But if you go for the others you'll pay big time.

Strength:

Clean sound and imaging. Bi-wirable gold plated binding posts.

I purchased the Wharfedale Sapphire 83's because of their price on uBid.com: $39 each. After checking the specifications on Wharfedale's web site, I was attracted to their design and quality. Gold plated binding posts are a big plus. Initially, I wired them up as rear speakers for my home theatre setup in the living room while waiting for some Wharfedale MFM-7 towers to arrive. They impressed me with their clean sound. Next, I bi-wired them to a Pioneer NS5 mini system in my bedroom. These are very enjoyable speakers. Excellent imaging! The performers seem to be playing right in front of you. The highs/mids are sharp and the bass is tight. 10 stars!

Strength:

great sound, great value, and a great speaker overall

Weakness:

None so far

I picked these up at ubid for $49.00 each, a good deal, so I bought them. Watch out for uBid's shipping, They charge way to much for it. But anyway I set these up at first without bi-wireing them- good, clean sound. Then I got up the nerve to bi-wire them- wow what a change in sound quality. They seemed to fill up more of the room and sounded better than I could have ever thought. I would reccomend these to anyone who wants a good, high-end speaker but don't want to give up your life savings to get them. I also have the center to go with these and am saving to get the 87's or 89's for my main speakers.

Strength:

Great bass, crisp treble, excellent price

Weakness:

mids seem to be a little flat

For about $200/shipping from Ubid, these speakers are a bargain. I purchased these to compliment the Modus One.Six and the Modus Music Center for the home theatre powered by the Nakamichi AV 7. So far, these speakers are pretty good for the surround sound. I will update more once I have these a little longer. Excellent buy....hopefully the mids will break in because right now, it sounds a little flat. I will give the Sapphire 83's a rating of 5 for the cost and sound even though the mids sound flat....wonder if it needs to be broken in.

Strength:

clean musicality; much fuller sound, greater bass than expected from such a small speaker

Weakness:

exterior a little cheap looking

Very impressed with the sound, musicality balance of the speaker. nice imaging from a speaker that seems to disapear. Deeper bass than I would have expected too.Am a fan of good vocals- and they sound very natural.
"Won" the bid for them on Ubid at $47 apeice-- a steal!--
UNTIL Ubid adds a whopping $63 for shipping and handling. Beware of that on anything you bid on there. I would definitely buy a second pair for surround -- or perhaps try one of the 3 way speakers in the line--- if I could get them somewhere else. Actually think I am going to like them better than my old Fortes--- which have unbelievable presence, and bass--- in fact too much of a good thing. Gret for effects and shaking the house--but maybe not as true to music.

Strength:

Clear sound, bi-wire option, gold plated posts.

Weakness:

cheesy pseudo-rosewood boxes

I just got these speakers wired tonight. Using a Kenwood
VR-4080. Sound is impressive, clear, crisp, bass is a little lacking but considering that this is a bookshelf speaker with a 6 1/4 woofer it is not all that bad.
For a good test listen to the cd "Audio" by Blue Man Group.
I was pleasantly suprised. Looking forward to when the speakers have about 40 hours in them which is when I understand they "loosen up".

Strength:

Solid-Heavy construction. Excellent drivers. Good all-around sound.

Weakness:

Coloration in the low end.

Nice speakers for the price. I paid under 130 for a pair on UBID, which they are definately worth. They use the same drivers as many of the Wharfedale speakers so they can handle and deliver a lot. I haven't tried them too much in an open room yet, still remodeling, and just using them with the PC, but they will be my rears in my soon-to-come Home Theater. Buy 'em, you won't be sorry.

Strength:

great price

Weakness:

exterior

It seems a lot of people get these speakers from ubid. Me too. I connect these speakers to a JVC receiver through a pair of monster speaker cables. No center speaker, no rear channel. My whole system cost about $280 with shipping and overall. This is my first serious audio system. And it turns out pretty good. I am very pleased. Considering their price, I pay $97 for a pair, I will give five start for the value rating.

Strength:

Transparent, smooth, musical, and good looking too

Weakness:

thin in the low bass, but fine for a medium sized bookshelf speaker

I originally bought these to be the surrounds on my home theater system that had the SP 89s as the front speakers. But they sounded better than the KEF Coda 7s that I had bought to be my B speakers for another room. So I decided I couldn't waste the quality of these just to have them doing surround effects, so I switched them with the KEFs. These sound as good as the SP 87s and SP 89s for all but the low bass, so they are super value. If you need a set of bookshelf speakers that you want to sound like much larger, costlier models, then these are the ones.

Strength:

Great overall quality for the money

Weakness:

-100Hz

I have just purchased my first somewhat high end audio system from ubid. I am running a Harmon/Kardon FL8300 cd player through a Harmon/Kardon AVR10 reciever to these speakers without a center or rear channel or a sub.

My whole system cost about $375 with shipping and overall
I'm very pleased. I also but some monster cables which was addittional. I have listened to other high end devices in stores but this is the first system I've lived with so I really don't have a great refrence point, but I do have good ears and this is what I've noticed about these speakers.

Overall they are pretty good. I only paid $94 for the pair which is probablly why I'm so happy. For bookshelf speakers they have good bass. Of course in the really low end they could use more clarity. things get kind of fuzzy at around
50 or 40 Hz (I'm guessing).

The Highs are good. My only complaint there is that percussion sounds like high hat and some high pitched drum machine sounds really poke through and when that happens it is really unnatural. But guitars and vocals sound great.

I've played some Pink Floyd and Phish and they both sounded great. SO did Bella Fleck (contemporary new agy jazz if you don't know who they are). Standard straight ahead jazz (With acoustic bass) had some problems. The horns sounded fine but the acoustic bass looses its definition and character.

My last test was to put on some Prymus and for the first time this was where the speakers really fell short. The bottom end of "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" just failed to come through over all. It just generrally felt kind of hollow.

I am anxious to break these speakers in and see how they handle some bottom end after a few weeks. I also hope those percussive highs loosen up.

I know this review sounds negative, but really if you can buy these refurbished like I did they are a great buy. I really didn't expect much more from $100 book shelf speakers. Buy these if you need some nice rear channels or if you want a small bedroom system.
