Strength:

YOUVE NEVER HEARD BASS LIKE THIS FROM A 12" MAN DO THEY KICK AND CRYSTAL CLEAR TREBLE AND HIGH

Weakness:

NONE WHAT SO EVER

I have these hooked up to an awia nsx-hma56 5 speaker surround sound it has 7 channels Left High,Low Right high,Low 3 suround center rear left and rear right and powered sub out but dont have one of those yet. I have the ns-1000m(the other 12 was blown when found)hooked up to the low channel (75watts) and just that little power shakes the house. And when i hook up the high man crystal clear highs.

Im looking for an amp so i can hook it up to the powered sub out so i can use all 7 channels. but this a great speaker man was i lucky when we ran across these. I had no idea about these speakers history man they sound good for 20 year old speakers. My freinds 2 15" fishers have a real hard time stayin with these speakers at 150 watts and this one speaker only at 75

Strength:

dynamic capacity, loves going loud with a well matched amp, transparant, effortless bass slam.

Weakness:

matching to correct system

I remember the first day I laid eyes on the Yamaha's, (NS1000Ms made in 1984) I saw them and thought I never knew Yamaha made speakers. They were owned by one of my dad's friends and I was just as much into hi-fi then as I am now. He asked me did I want to listen to them, I thought why not, boy was I in for a shock. Connected to a Quad 606mk2 poweramp, a 34 preamp and a Denon 1500mk2 CD player, the combination was dynamite. I went through many of my bass draining CDs where my speakers would simply buzz and rasp (an indication to turn the amp down, I was using Mission 751s at the time). I was astonished to not only find they could cope but thrived on deep bass lines. All the other speakers I had nearly killed with this type of music. It was not only the bass slam I loved so much but how clear and unmuddled the sound became, it was like a living breathing experience. The transparency was much like that of Quads ESL63s that one of my other friends let me listen to on numerous occasions. These speakers will show up any weak links in the hi-fi/listening material chain, as I was reminded when inserting a particulary bad drum & bass recording. Funnily enough they cope with dark drum and bass particulary well (especially when it's recorded well). They sounded dynamic and not harsh, with brilliant speed, keeping up with the complex drum patterns that most speakers can not keep up with. The speakers that could keep up with this speed definately couldn't do it at such high decibels (JBL LX2s). I have visited my dad's friend many times since to see if I could trip the speakers up and not once have I walked away anything less than breathless. He did however tell me that they are a pain to match up with amplifiers. He had tried a few and said the difference was amazing they are truely transparent. I have tried to get him to part with these speakers many times and to no avail. When I didn't have the money to buy them he ,as sods law goes, offered them to me. He still has them at the moment and I have a feeling he will buckle this time as he's looking for something even better at the moment. My money is saved and I'm ready to pounce this time. Only listen to these speakers unless you can afford to find and buy a pair. NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.MJS

THE NS100O is great speaker to be used for midfield or nearfield monitoring in the studio. This is its primary function shared with its idustry standard NS10m.In this envirnment the speaker doesan exelent job which explains why they are so highly sought after. This speaker is currently only sold to the Japanese market. Its distribution in the states ceased quite some time ago. Warning!!!!
This speaker is highly accurate. It will present your material as it is and not how it "should be". Everything from poor bass to sloppy highs will pushed to the forefront. It's also a very unforgiving speaker. It will not compensate in any way for poor amp , cable ,or component performance. That said , this should not be the first choice of anyone looking for "great sound". Yamaha has adressed this issue with thier current line which are designed to sound good with just about any amp eceiver. Also the NS1000's don't fill large rooms with sound and don't image well under these conditions. Don't forget, this is a real studio monitor being sold to consumers.

Its black woodgrain cabinitry is looks awsome even on its worst day. The dirivers are configured as 12' 4' 1.5'respectivly. The woofer is sheilded by a heavy guage steel grill. They handle around 75 to 100 watts.

Its price tag will vary but expect to pay about $1000 to 1300 used. They can only be purchased new through a Japenes outlet. If that's the case lokk forward to a hefty price of $3500 to 3800 US dollars.

Again if you don't need something this accurate and truthful do yourself a huge favor and choose another speaker. As they say.......be careful of what you ask for....

Strength:

Solid Bass, powerful sound, crystal clear mid range and top end !

Weakness:

Too big for Bedroom & most living rooms!

Never heard anything like it after hearing these at an old friend s house I had to buy a pair, they cost me £1100 second hand in absoloute mint condition !! This is more than they actually retailed for back in the eighties !! Worth every penny, If your after a pair of spekers that make every CD or Viynl sound like a masterpiece, these are the babies !!

They are currently being used with Audiolab 8000C and 8000P amps, Marantz CD17 KI Signature and Systemdek 2X2 turntable !!

If your set up is similar to this, IM sure that u'l find the NS1000s unbeatable.

Strength:

crystal clear highs and a accurate Midrange

Weakness:

Bass shy for such a monsterous enclosure. Equipment matching is more critical.

This is the second pair I have owned. The first did not quite live up to my expectations, maybe this could have been room interaction or associated equipment matched to them at the time.I always did like the Mids & Hi's they reminded me of electrostats
with there clear open sound Quality.I was just expecting more out of the 12" inch
woofers in the way of slam, perhaps it's because I know what a 12" inch JBL woofer can do in this Dept.I got another pair on the used market with a small 60 watt amplified Yamaha sub thrown in with the deal.I really like what I'm hearing. This time around I have a smaller room and I have the speakers Matched to other Yamaha electronics. C-4 pre-amp, P2201 pro Amp. & a Denon CD player. The 2201 Amp is highly recommended with these speakers, lots of power and smooth sounding,Great mid-range & not harsh on the top at all. The little sub makes a BIG difference. I've turned it down so it does not call attention to it's self.
and set it at it's lowest setting of 70 Hz.
I do not keep the sub on all the time, only when I feel the bass is a little on the shy side with certain recordings. My NS 1000's must be early models, because these are not Mirror Imaged.
Remember when that was a big buz word. The only reason I'd give these a demarit mark would be for the weak bass, there's No excuse, these just should put out more in this area.On the plus side because they cut out at 40Hz. they act more like a Brittish speaker like the Quad which means that you will are less likely have a problem with room interaction with the NS 1000's.

Strength:

Rock solid base, translucent highs, collector status, performance per buck, loud!!!!!

Weakness:

Scratched cabinets

I now have a Home Theatre set up with lots of NS/1000s in it. Boy does it look ugly and boy does it sound good.
I don't do a lot of comparison with other equipment. Truth is I've never invested enough money in ancillary equipment to properly size up the Yammies. But I'm getting there.

The thing is, 2nd hand, these things are the bargain of the century. They were $3000NZ when I originally purchased my first set new. The people who have parted with the 2nd hand ones I've got are spending upwards of $9000NZ to get what they perceive to be better sound.

I'm just amazed and the longevity of the original investment and the level of performance these things still offer.

If you've got some, I would suggest you do some serious listening before letting them go. If you break them - oh dear!! But there are people around who will repair them for you - at a cost.

As I write, I still own a pair of NS-1000m that I bought new in 1982. Many speakers (Maggies, B&W 801s, JBLs, etc.) have since come and gone. But the NS-1000's stayed (and will remain). An absolute freak bookshelf (it's like calling QE2 a boat) from what most would consider a motorcycle company!
No doubt, presents a difficult load to drive properly, but once it is partnered with the right gear (an Audio Research SP-8 and a Krell KSA-50 in my case), you will have musicians performing... well, more like in your face! The mids may be a little forward for some's liking (especially in smaller rooms), but the +/- 3 dB attenuators provide for the mid and the high on the front baffle will do the trick, to a level.

Everything... you name it, imaging, timberal accuracy, the bass (yes... the bass is slam-bam-see-you-later kind of stuff), air, space between instruments, clean highs, effortless mids on vocals, etc. are all perfect, just as the recording engineer intended for you to hear them. No wonder this pair still remains in my
possesion after some 17 odd years.

If it's good, they don't make 'em any more. That the rule. So, if you chance upon a pair of used pair of NS-1000m's and if own some decent gear to partner it, don't pass up the chance. It is certainly worth a try. Four stars for performance and one for reliability, that's five in all!

The NS1000 is a very good speaker but by today's standards, it will stillturn in a respectable performance. In comparison to the typical European sound, (with perhaps a few exceptions like the Castle Harlechs), the NS1000s sound quick & lively - thus making their European counterparts sound slow, dull & sluggish.

Bass is good & controlled but not overly extended. Midrange is fast but does not perhaps have the finesse & musical quality of say a Sonus Faber Amator 2.

All other areas are decent & I would have given this speaker 5 stars, say 8 years ago.
