Strength:
Incredible high and midrange. Beautiful. Solidly built. Yamaha quality.
Weakness:
Not really, but they are heavy at about 90 lbs each - The wife doesn't even think about moving them around to vacuum etc, when I'm not home :) I had a pair of NS-1000M's a couple of years ago, but sold them due to some financial constraints. I regretted it, because I've never heard a speaker that I liked better than the NS-1000's. I heard my first pair when only 18 years old in the late seventies - Just incredible! Well, I recently picked up another pair off of eBay, but this time it's the NS-1000's not the Monitors. I like the look of the monitors too, but the non-monitor 1000's with the ebony cabinets are my real dream speakers. They look as beautiful as they sound. These babies are with me for life. I was amazed that I was able to safely ship these puppies across the country using UPS without damage. Twice before, I tried and failed miserably. Credit goes to the seller who took the necessary extraordinary steps to ensure safe shipment. Similar Products Used: Paradigm 9SE MK3, Yamaha NS-645, Yamaha NS-670, Yamaha NS-690 MK11 |

Strength:
Clarity, punch, dynamics, revealing, studio-quality
Weakness:
Upper treble can be tirening with lousy recordings. Beryllium is dangerous to touch. Before NS-1000M I've been using Yamaha's model NS-690 for ten years and been very satisfied. I test-listened tens of smaller speakers at home, with no satisfaction: no speaker could come even close in openess, clarity and transparency. The boxes of NS-690 are even sturdier than of NS-1000M. Now I have used these Genelec-modified active NS-1000M speakers and been even happier than before. They are really amazing speakers. Ugly as hell they still convinced my lady because of the even and revealing sound. I've listened Dynaudios, Magnepans, Dunlavys, B&Ws and these Yamaha beasts are still the best. Strength:
excellent mid with deep bass
Weakness:
Yamaha should start making them again After years of climbing the hi fi ladder a man from AVC who supplied me with a valve recommended these speakers as a perfect match. However, you can only get them second hand. After a couple of weeks I got a pair ,boxed and in original immaculate condition. If there are any employees of Yamaha who read this,START PRODUCING THEM AGAIN,they beat anything I've heard for the money. The mid and bass are superb. You cannot beleive how good they are until you listen.I think people who claim the bass needs more weight need to look at their amps and cd player. My valve amp delivers a lot of current and drives them superbly with excellent bass weight to the point where I feel it in my chest.Try war of the worlds remix album and the bass is really low or a good dose of Kodo will do the same. |

Strength:
Detailed, Dynamic, exceptional power handling and FUN, FUN, FUN.
Weakness:
VERY- too much revealing of ancillary equipment. These are one of the best kept secrets in audio history. I own another four pairs of speakers, namely the Spendor LS3 5a, B&W CDM1, Dynaudio Contour 3.3, and Dynaudio confidence C4.The B&W are out of their wits in this company, and while the Spendors offer unique strength- they are not the speaker for all the time and for every room. The Contour 3.3 are excellent speakers and are unfatigueing and detailed- but rather warm sounding and very inefficient- but still a very civilized alternative. The Confidence C4 is grown up Contour, but still power hungry- with excellent soundstaging and top to bottom wholeness- and extremely uncoloured and enjoyable- a true high-end reference. But for the money- and FUN- including unlimited power handling, dynamics, bass punch, mid detail, and natural treble rendition- the Yamaha is the one to beat. In the past I tended to judge them as bright, but that was perhaps because of the ancillary equipment they were being partnered to. Who said audiophiles cannot have FUN!! Strength:
Very Real sound, perfect
Weakness:
Expensive I purchased these speakersin the Ebony finish (very rare) new in 1978. They have performed very well. I use them with a pair of JBL L-36 powered by two Nakamichi 600 series amps bridged monorally. Sound is just perfect even after 24 years. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Everything but they are very revealing
Weakness:
No longer available I use my NS1000Ms on leadshot filled heavy duty stands with an LP12, Marantz CD52 and a Naim NAT02 tuner. They are completely standard and I leave the grills on. These speakers are amazing -I've never heard anything else that sounds as realistic and can go so loud - they're driven by Musical Fidelity Pre3A and a M.F. MA 50 each. There is nothing they cannot do - I recently used them to provide the sound for a party in a large barn and even with 50 Watts they could blow the roof off and get everyone on the dancefloor. At the same time you can listen to a really quiet orchestral passage and hear the musicians breathing! If you can get hold of a pair buy them, I dread the day mine stop working. Strength:
Crisp clear sound, with a lot of room acoustic being carried through to the listener.
Weakness:
In some cases the bass is insufficient. I,ve owned my pair since summer 1985. It has been used with variuos equipment. They are currently running with amplication suppled by Sentec (SCA 1) as preamplifier and power supplied by Advantage S-150 (a Bladelius construction). I''ve tried using the McIntosh C-504, but found the sound uninteresting. That unit sounds far better with the old Tandberg 3006 A. The speaker itself is the most magnificent piece of equipment I have ever owned. The sound is out of this world and suits nearly every type of music, perhaps with the exclusion of French romatic organ music, with it''s low pedals. Great speakers! Similar Products Used: None |

Incredibly accurate I'm from Argentina. I first saw the NS-1000 monitors during an audio show back in the '80s. Never forget them. |

Strength:
Powerful bass-slam,very fast transient response, very high build quality, vacuum vapor-deposition-formed beryllium midrange and tweeter domes, capable of stunning realism.
Weakness:
Bass roll-off below 40 Hz. I bought these speakers new in 1976 for $980/Pr. and have enjoyed them for almost 24 years. I'll be replacing them soon with Martin Logan ReQuests but intend to keep them for my second system. They were originally sold as recording studio monitors but were available to the public through Yamaha dealers. What's unique about these speakers is their beryllium dome diaphragms. They are grown in a vacuum and are much harder and lighter than other materials. Beryllium is a strategic metal used in nuclear weapons to separate the sub-units of critical mass in the physics package before implosion. Because it's use is restricted now, these speakers are no longer imported but are still avialable in Japan. Replacement drivers are available from Yamaha as I blew a tweeter recently and replaced it with a $128.00 unit. When driven with quality electronics ( Levinson, Krell, Bryston, etc.) they are still capable of striking realism. Their speed and detail are second only to eletrostatics like Martin Logan or SoundLab or to current- day speakers costing many thousands. Similar Products Used: JBL Soveriegn I S8R's, AR 3-a's. |
