Tight Bass Can shake a room with an 8 inch woofer!
Weakness:
At $89 are you kidding me? I had to get a new sub because my Infinity Servo wasnt shielded and was causing terrible interference with my TV. I really thought that sub kicked, I believe it was rated at 150 watts with a 10 inch woofer. This sub makes me laugh at the Infinity. The Infinity is so boomy compared to the AR. The AR's bass is really tight, and yet wall shaking at the same time. I have the crossover set at about 70 hz, with the volume setting at about 1/3 of the way up, and have achieved a nice blend with Paradigm Mini Monitors. In my moderate sized room, it can really shake the walls. I cant imagine a sub in the $300-400 that comes close. With the street price for this at just over $100, it is truly one of the top bargains in all of home theater. Similar Products Used: Infinity Servo Paradign PDR 8 |

Strength:
Overall value for the money. Great acoustical design makes the eight "Feel" like a Ten. Looks great. deep clean bass. LOOK AT THE PRICE, FOR ALL OF THAT!!!
Weakness:
None, if you can complain about this sub your CRAZY. I have used this sub for a few weeks now and I am completely impressed. I read the reviews here before I made my purchase, and I still was suprised with the sound that came from that "BIG" little eight inch woofer. It really does shake things up! I have to tell you I went to a local best buy and sampled all of their 8"-10" sub-woofers ranging $199-$499 and none of them out perform this sub, and I got it for only $89.00 plus shipping, BRAND NEW! So if your looking for a sub with great performance and house shaking bass Without spending $500-$1000. This is it. Similar Products Used: This is my First Sub But I Auditioned plenty of others none of which had this much KICK for the money! I would buy this sub for $300 and be happy! |

Strength:
Price, size, "Boom for the buck"
Weakness:
It has potential to loosen flooring. Just wanted to update my impressions: Have replaced my AVR 2500 with an HK AVR520 this makes a tremendous difference in the subwoofer (as well as everything else). WOW! I'm even more impressed with the ability to handle low frequency and music... and my wife doesn't even complain about the box because it's hidden. |

Strength:
Subtle, sophisticated sound on the very cheap.
Weakness:
Output is limited by it's size. The neighbors aren't going to call the police on you. What a clever little box this is. I just bought it on the dirt cheap for my cottage system, and along with B&W 602's and a cheapo Polk Center channel powered by an old Carvin 880 receiver (pro-logic only) and some old Radio Shack speakers for surrounds, mixed with a digital TV box with HBO, I'm in audio/video heaven for the summer. My room is small.. 12X18. When you unpack this thing, it's light and only about a foot cubed, so I was thinking I'd made a mistake. The controls are well thought out.. volume, low pass filter, and a phase switch.. that's all a sub should have. So I set the sub in between my speakers against the wall (not in the corner per directions which would surely increase output, but always IMO localizes the sub signal) connected to the receiver via an RCA cable at line level, set the pass filter and volume to 12PM as the directions suggested and, yuck, low fi all the way (that setting is asking an 8" speaker to carry quite a bit of upper bass/mid information, and it sounds like a woofer, not a sub. I immediately dialed the low filter down to it's lowest setting at 50hz and the sub began to really impress me with it's sophisticated sound. The guys that designed this were obviously not of the sizzle/boom persuasion.. I'm surprised that a product like this got out the door because a lot of people in this price range, likely looking for thick, congested bass and boom, are going to be disappointed with this speaker's subtle, very intelligent bass reinforcement. I got so excited I went home and got a CD player (Micromega Stage) so I could see how the sub did with real music. Once again, I was not disapppointed as bass notes still had their snap but were more "there" than they had been minus the sub. I cranked things up pretty high, and the little AR sub never crackled or popped like so many other cheap subs (and some more expensive ones) I've auditioned. The designers of small, inexpensive equipment have a lot of considerations and compromises to address. In this instance, the marketing guys were looking the other way and some people who care had a chance to play with this sub. If you want a nice little audiophile grade sub on the amazing cheap, and if you've got a smallish room (that's important), how can you possibly go wrong? Similar Products Used: ADS M3, Velodyne 15 |

Price, Performance, adjustability.
Weakness:
None Got great price and service from jandr! Sub is excellent! Took a few days to get it completely dialed in, my fault, not the sub. It truly performs great! For the price it is absolutely wonderful. I run it with B&Ws and it blends in nicely picking up the signals below 60hz. Subtle yet definitely there. Try it with some Earth Wind and Fire! Strength:
Very tight bass, Mono Input RCA(most receivers have mono-out), Simple controls.
Weakness:
Only sounds the best in a corner. Whoa! I just got this subwoofer 3 days ago and I must say it Roxx! The bass is very loud and clear. Turned up just little over one half way and receiver setting at 0db (aval. -10db to +10db) it puts out enough bass to produce a headache in about 2 minutes. The acoustics of it are a bit weird though. The manual suggests putting it in front of a corner, and is exactly right. I tried it just pointing straigh tward me against the wall and behind/on the side of the couch. Neither of those options worked as well as putting it in a corner. Once I got it positioned right I could really tell what it is capable of doing. You can definatly heard the bass and feel it too. Every review I have seen has been positive, which is why I decided to buy this one. It is right up there with the Yamaha dual 8" and probably better. I paid 155 with 2nd day shipping from J$R. If you are thinking about buing this sub, make sure you have a place in either the left or right corner in front of the room, otherwise you may not get the bass as deep as you want. I am not a expert in audio in any way, and I have seen a lot of people say that this sub doesn't do that well with music, and I have not found this to be true at all. If you're not an audiophile and are looking for a good sub for music and movies, this does both really well. I am using AR Suboofer Cable. Similar Products Used: Yamaha Dual 8" for about a minute at best buy. Sony 12" at best buy(both sounded distorted at high volume, the AR one doesn't) |

Strength:
Great sound, small, and price.
Weakness:
None at this price. This subwoofer far exceeded my expectations of what I thought this sub was going to sound like. When I hooked it up and listened to some dvd's I was amazed by the clear, crisp, and full sounding bass coming from it. Don't let the size fool you, this little sub filled my entire living room with more than enough bass with the volume knob on the sub turned only a little over half way. Strength:
Price, sound, size, looks. Adds real depth.
Weakness:
No filling-rattling deep bass. (Price included shipping)Like the last reviewer (Apr 12, 2002), I am not an audiophile, but I have been an audiofreak since the mid-1970''s. This subwoofer is capable of adding what I wanted without dominating either my system or my house. Though my wife thinks it''s "huge", it''s really compact for a sub. It is also "sub tle" sonically. I have it tuned to accent the deep base in both DVD''s and music and it does that without ear-numbing distortion. If I set it at just the right volume and frequency, it''s hardly noticeable - until it''s turned off. The bass is tight and pleasant. I don''t want it to overpower me, just to add to what I already have. This, it accomplishes quite adequately. It also looks good (though it is going to be hidden) and feels solid. For the price, it''s perfect. Am using a cheap Subwoofer cable I got from Accessories4Less, connected to my LFE outlet on my Denon AVR 2500 - will go to A new receiver next year (either Denon or Outlaw). I team this with Linn Index+ front channels. Similar Products Used: Auditioned Klipsch, Sunfire Jr. and (ashamed to say) KLH. Sunfire was way out of my price-range and the others weren''t as good and enclosures were too big. |

Strength:
price. good bass.
Weakness:
none yet. Purchased this for the extra punch with DVD movies. On the first day i didnt notice much differnce. Only the lower notes were stronger. second day, it was whole another experience! the bass was too strong and i had to lower the volume on the unit. So far i am amzed at how much tight bass this little 8" sub can produce. great sub for the value. Similar Products Used: Sony, JBL, yamaha.. |

Supplies the low end base I wanted for my movies. The cost. $119.99 from J and R Music plus 25.20 for shipping via UPS Ground
Weakness:
Possibly weak for music. Will know more latter. In a few months, I hope to do a follow up review. This is a first impression review. I haven''''t had it long enough to put it through all its paces yet. It does what I really wanted a subwoofer to do. It adds base at the bottom end. It makes the movie DAS BOOT really come alive. It also adds to movies like PATTON and THE MATRIX. I haven''''t listened to much music yet. The one CD I listened to, it didn''''t seem quite up to par. At this point, I have not really dialed in the new sub to the system yet. I''''m not an audiophile. I do not need $1,000 subs and the like. Nor do I need to rattle windows with the base. I just want to hear the lower base frequencies when watching movies. I will pass along this story. Shortly after I got the sub, I was watching DAS BOOT with the sound turned up a little. My wife was up stairs and when the depth charges were going off, she wondered what was happening. She looked out the window to see if there were any teenagers with those rolling boom boxes called cars. She finally figured out the rattle was coming from down stairs. She said it was rattling the walls up stairs. That told me I had a keeper. My "system" includes the following: A Kenwood VR-509 receiver, 2 JBL LX300 2 way front speakers, an old Technics SB-C21 center speaker and 2 old Technics SB-S27 rear speakers.
