Strength:

Price and sound after modification.

Weakness:

have to add speaker material, but what the heck, 15-30 mins. and you are done.

I purchased this sub based on the comments that I read on this site. I had shopped around for 3-4 months trying to find a sub that keep up with my Yamaha RX-V800 and Infinity IL-40 and IL-10 speakers that I had purchase earlier this year. The Audio 10 that I bought about 2 years ago had done a fine job but you know how the yearning for more power and quality sound gets. A co-worker of mine had a 1000 watt Velodyne that he was sending to a friend in Japan. I was allowed to use it before he shipped it off. This was a truly incredible sub and I had gave it back to him with a heavy heart. Thus my search began. Due to limited funds for more stereo upgrades I was upset by the prices that I saw in local stores as well as on the internet. I read this site on a reagular basis and read about the SW-15. I bid for this on U-Bid and am happy to say that I am the proud father of a sub that compliments my system beautifully. If you read about the modifications, I experienced the exact transformation that was mention by all of the other reviewers.

As far as setup is concerned, this sub does everything that I could ask set at 10:00 output and approximately 80 crossover. I will keep experimenting. This sub is very tight now (it was boomy before modification as stated before in other reviews) and hits low frequecys in music and movies that I had not heard before. I may not be an audiophile but I have a extremely good ear and have heard systems that cost 4-5 times the price of what I own. I could talk more about my system but maybe it would be better to ask my neighbors. HE HE!! They could tell you all about it.

Strength:

Loud killer bass at low price

Weakness:

acoustics setup is a pain

I picked this product up at costco not to long ago. I have friends with their quote "systems" that supposedly were better than mine. So I sought out in search of a sub to complete my stereo setup, and at my bugdet at the time limited me to $220. So at Costco one day I saw the AudioSource SW15 for $205. I went home to think about it and came back a week later with the intention of buying the sub and the price had dropped to $179.99.

Since my purchess I've had quite a time trying to set the acoustics in my room and at first found nothing but trouble. Now, with the help of a friend/stereo expert, i have setup acoustics perfectly and have had many great calls from my neighbors saying it sounds like a never ending earthquake here.

I would be lying if I said I was not thrilled with my purchess.

Befor settleing on the SW15 I auditioned Ultimate, Infinity, Klipsh, Paradigm, Carver, JBL, and Velodyne in my soundroom. These other subs sold in a range of as little as $250.00 each, up to the Velodyne at $800.00 each. These were my best prices, after much haggling, on all the other subs auditioned. I was advised I would need at least two 12's, but more probably a pair of 15 inch subs, due to the size and high ceiling in my sound room, according to the analysis I recieved from a sales rep I spoke to at One Call. Thus, I had to double the above prices for my application.
After a few hours breakin period I am overwhelmed that a subwoofer with a MSRP of $499.00 (and can be bought if you catch them in stock at COSTCO.COM for $199.00) is in essentially all respects an equal or better performing subwoofer than the Velodyne (albeit I did not go into the 15 inch One thousand five hundred dollar plus Velodyne models, they were simply more than I was willing to pay each for a pair of subs). As mentioned before my sound room has a large volume at 26'X 32' with a 22 foot ridge at its peak, and I bought a pair of SW15's to be sure I had, hopefully, equal performance to the Velodynes. At that point they were my pick of the lot (Velodynes are excellent subs). The SW15 seems to have a slight peak at about 60 Hertz, which is disappearing as I put more playing time on them. The Velodyne seemed a little more flat from about 120 down to 40 Hertz. The SW15 Audiosource is better than the Velodynes below 40 Hertz and has a much tighter base which is improving, at this point, everytime I put a little more breakin time on them. What can I say, the second SW15 sits typically with the power switch in the off position, unless I get in the mood to move the furniture with them. These are an incredible buy!

I purchased this sub from Costco.com for $199. It is a amazing buy for a sub that MSRP's at $499. I got it within 4 days of ordering it and hooked it up that night. It was awesome!!!! I turned on Britney Spears and cranked it up, I almost had to move this of the coffee table so they wouldnt vibrate off!! The sub is even cooler with a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder! I would recommend this sub to anyone who wants a subwoofer for their home theater system and is an exceptional buy at $199. Get em while they last at costco.com!!!

Strength:

Good power, good kick, decent sound quality too. GOOD PRICE

Weakness:

Distorts a bit when pushed, but that is when pushed hard

Cant beat it for any where near the price in the current market, I have heard subs costing $200 to $300 more that will not out perform or match it for that matter

This subwoofer is great. I just bought it at Costco for $216 total. It provides a great amount of bass in the 25-30 range, and ampule amounts of bass in the 25hz and below range. It and the Advent s550i subwoofer are the best way to go if you only have a few clamshells to spend on a subwoofer and still want 75% of the performance of a big Velodyne 18 Servo. It is a winner on all fronts. I listened to Terminator 2, Ronin, Top Gun, Eagles Hell Freezes Over and numerous CD's, the performance of this subwoofer is stately if I have to put a word to it. No, it does not go down to 16hz at 116 db. Yes it does go down low enough for you to feel and hear the explosions in movies as opposed to just hearing them. I have the money to buy any subwoofer on the market but why spend more money if this sub does the job with ease. I vote for this subwoofer, hands down. Buy if you have the chance.

This is a steal for $199 at Costco! I don't even think there will be a better sub at this price. Usually for $199, all you get is an 8 inch woofer, 50 watt amplifier, and bass that doesn't go below 40 hz. With the AudioSource, you get a huge 15" woofer, 200 watt amp, and bass extension well below 25 Hz. That's about 4 times more power!
The first time I heard it(small room), the bass was somewhat boomy above 50 Hz. The crossover needs to be set to 40Hz. I then moved it a bigger room(20 feet long, 13 feet wide, 8 feet high) with openings to the kitchen and dining room.

The bass quality improved immensly from the smaller room. Bass went very deep and loud. It is even quite musical. I tested it with the Stereophile test cd 1. There was ample amouts of bass below 40Hz. Bass rolled off after 25 Hz. I can still hear the 20 Hz note but not as it was above 25 Hz.
This is as good as the Definitive PF15TL I heard in the store, which costs $700!

If you have a fairly large room, This is for you. $200, nothing is better at this price. Hey, even if you have a big budget, You can get 4 of these, buy crossover modules(to further reduce boominess), and it will outperform (in the deepest bass) the big Velodyne FSR 18 for a fraction of the price. Or get 8 of these if you have a really huge room. There is no way a single 18" can move more air than 8 15" drivers.

Wow! I ordered this from costco.com (they allow non-members to shop online, but only for the next couple months I'm told) for $199+shipping (around $23, I think).
It is currently powered by an Aiwa DPL receiver (I know, I know...saving money for a real one (: ) and matched with a JBL CL505 center, Coral tower mains, Optimus X7 surrounds. I use the setup mainly for DVD watching (75%) and some for music (25%) and I couldn't be happier. I didn't want to spend much money but knew I needed to add a subwoofer to give that extra umph. I've got a large room (60x20 rectangular, includes dining area and kitchen without a wall seperating them). This monster sounds great. I found that I had to spend a fair amount of time playing with the settings to keep it from being intrusively boomy, but after adjusting the crossover and level controls it sounds phenomenal.

My weekend project will be filling it with speaker-fill to tighten it up a bit, but overall I am quite happy with this sub.

Strength:

ALOT OF THUMP FOR YOUR BUCK!!!!!

Weakness:

none! considering it's a $200.00 15inch 200watt sub

Yes it's true, this subwoofer requires some careful placement and adjustments which will in most cases, require the placement of baffling material to reduce boominess. Compared to subwoofers in the $700.00 to $1000.00 range (no matter who the manufacturer is)this sub has huge potential.

When setup and placement is very carefully thought-out and experimented with and any neccesary internal baffling is installed (based purely on individual tastes, as this is really what it's all about) you will find that the AudioSource sw15 can add tremendous, thundering, solid base to both; music and home theater systems.

Remember that structural differences ie. a wooden apartment floor with carpet vs. a cement floor with or without tile or wood applied to it will have vastly different sound resonances.

Bottom line, spend $3000.00 on a '68 Ford Pinto, and it will not accelerate or corner or have the smooth ride of a $60,000.00 2000 model year Mercedes Benze. The designers and engineers at AudioSource should be proud of their accomplishment, they figured out a way to bring audiofile quality in a large size versatile subwoofer at an unbelievable price.

In retort to several of the comments from other reviewers as to a buzzing sound and/or problems with the auto on/off power modes, make sure the wiring of your entire system is clean and neat. It has been the experience of many of us audiofiles that this can cause many a headache in many areas of a system.

Strength:

Low bass at a reasonable price.

Weakness:

I hooked this up after receiving it from Costco. It seems that AudioSource has been reading these reviews. The unit as it arrived has a polyfill inside the box. The dimensions are between those that were posted earlier in these reviews and the larger size that is on the website. The outside dimensions are 20"X19"X22". There are two ports for tuning the box. I cannot find any fault with the construction of the units. There is a large aluminum plate that holds the controls and wire mounts that has a portion of it finned to act as a heat sink for the internal amplifier. The auto on off on the Audiosource Subs works perfectly with sufficient delay on off and an instant on.

I am using my 15" unit with two 8" Audiosource subs that I picked up off Ubid. That way I cross over at 50 hz to one 8" sub and am using the second to augment the reciever induced crossover point. I have tried this setup on Saving Private Ryan Special Edition DTS and the beach and tank scenes are extremely realistic. The tracks on the setup CD that came with the 15" sub are really good to evaluate the various elements that a subwoofer should reproduce but not color. I still have a little tweaking to do with the crossover points to make sure the levels are consistent across all frequencies. I have a little hole at 100 right now that the Harmon Kardon is causing. I will be able to fill that in with the 8" subs when I get some time to do tweaking.

I have no choice in room placement and these subwoofers are set on top of my Home Theater cabinet very close to the ceiling of my 20' X 12' by 8' tall listening room.

I have found no boominess, hangover, or other untoward difficulties in using this subwoofer combination. Having had large woofers in the past (the Altecs had four 15 inch woofers) I am well aware of the limitations that they have with higher frequencies. The use of the 15" with the 8" subs eliminates this problem and keeps the 15" working on the lowest octave of bass.

$179 + $89 X 2 = $357 for a superb subwoofer compliment.
