Power......This thing will blow you away.

Weakness:

Power......If you want this sub, make sure you have a house that can handle it!

I've tested many a sub, but this one stands out from the rest. Very easy to set up, no real adjustments are needed, but a little tweaking does help. Plenty'O power, and a very sturdy cabinet. Solid hitting, chest bursting base from this guy, and at a very reasonable price (check Best Buy, you can find it there for around $400).

Strength:

Plays loud.

Weakness:

Low-pass upper limit is 120hz, excessive power amp hum, no damping material in box.

This sub was very disappointing. I used the reviews located at this site to select this sub. I was able to find an "updated" version at a distant Sears. I got it at a good price because Sears had this model on clearance. I wanted to use the sub with a set of JBL Trio135 speakers. The Trio135 satellites are the same satellites that come with the JBL SCS135 system. The SCS135 system has received excellent reviews on this site, and sounds good to me though I wanted a better sub that the one that comes with the SCS135 system. The problem the low-end cut-off frequency for the Trio135 satellites is 200hz. This presents a problem, as I did not realize the highest cut-off frequency on the LW-15 is 120hz. This would be fine for larger bookshelf speakers, but rarely do small satellites play that low which leaves me with a frequency hole.

Looking in the ports on the back reveals no damping material of any kind as someone else reported in a review. This probably contributes to the boominess of the sub. Before purchasing the sub, I called Cerwin-Vega to verify the things mentioned in some reviews on this site about an “updated” version of the sub. I found out that some are true some are not. Tech Support told me that they did switch power amp manufacturers and that the newer version had a detachable power cord, however, the output power is still 200 watts, not 250 watts as reported in some reviews. He indicated the new power amp was supposed to be cleaner, thus could theoretically be played louder, but he did not provide any ratings. As reported by others, the “updated” sub comes with an owner’s manual referencing the old amp so I am sure the spec sheet stats refer to the old amp.

I found that the new power amp has substantially more power supply hum when in standby mode than the older version that I listened to. I have not read of anyone mentioning this in any of the reviews on this site though this is always something that professional reviewers talk about in magazine reviews. My B&W 3000 is dead quiet in standby mode (which should be expected of a $1500.00 MSRP priced sub.) I am not sure why this is so hard to find in a lesser sub. All subs I have listened to costing $500.00 or less have suffered from this issue to some extent though most are not audible unless I place my ear against the sub cabinet. Not sure why this problem is so prevalent in subwoofers as I have never heard a receiver amp or car amp hum. It can’t be that expensive to design a quiet amp. Nonetheless, the LW-15’s amp hum can be heard clearly in a quiet room at a distance of two feet. I find that unacceptable. Good price or not, I am going to return it to Sears. I’ll wait for another good deal that sounds better and has a more flexible low-pass filter range.

Strength:

power, built in crossover for satellite speaker use high and low level inputs, volume and crossover adjustments

Weakness:

Can be over driven, ports can be noisy

I have to say that at first I was somewhat dissapointed in this sub, but then I got to listening to it at reasonable levels and had to remember that this isnt my car. The sub has more than enough power for my system when adjusted properly, Advent satellites powered by a Sony DB940 receiver. For the most part the sound is good, with frequency response on par with what a 15" speaker should put out, low and deep, but could be a little tighter. I find my self adjusting it and then realizing its way too loud compared to the rest of my system at normal lisenting levels. When driving the sub hard and turning the volume controls up too far the sub gets sloppy with alot of port noise, which is typical for a ported sub. The built in power amp runs very cool and so far had given me no problems. I belive its a good buy for the money and fits my hometheater setup nicely but if you are looking for a punchy tight sound you should definitely do some comparisons before buying one.

Strength:

LOUD!! Nice deep bass. Cheap Price : ) and Heavy duty.

Weakness:

Auto on/off maybe mine is usually on all the time.
Needs a 1 inch stand to sit on so the cover dosent hit the floor.
Heavy 72pounds you cant just lean over and slide it back

Great powerful speakers.

I own 2 of them and run them on the same system : )
You can pick them up at a local Rex store for $593.00 for a pair. There is no way you can beat that deal that is with tax and all. That is for 2 15" subs what a bargain.

You can hardly buy one 10" infinity for that price

Go cerwin vega there excellent.

Strength:

Impact and ability to perform well with music and HT

Weakness:

None

I broke down and decieded to give this woofer a try. I am impressed with the sound and impact that this sub delivers with both music and HT. Its tight and fast for a 15 inch! They seem to have made a change on this model for mine has a detachable cord and also lacks the 3db switch and the highpass switch... also the switch is different for power, mine is a rocker type switch with off or auto-on...hmm ....it is much different then the pictures in the owners manual that depict the LW15..maybe its for the better! For price and value plus performance i give it a 5.

A follow up to all about the New Model LW15

Just to let all know that i spoke to Cerwin's Tech support concerning the changes on the LW15. I was told that many of the features that are missing from the old model are due to improvments. Also,it sports a more powerful amp rated at 250 watts as opposed to the older 200 watts. The issue with the auto on cycling on and off has been fixed which accounts for the new rocker style switch. And the detachable cord is needed for its a heaver gauge that is needed for the AB CLASS 250watt amp that can peak at a much greater draw than the stated 250 watts(he said that the 250 watts is VERY much under rated!) Hopes this info is helpful to anyone thats considering this model for purchase! HAPPY LISTENING.

Strength:

Cool orange surround with a nice dust cap

Weakness:

to many to mention

I just overhauled my system this month. I have been searching for a sub at a bang for the buck angle. I listen to half music and half video. Im using the Bose AM10's. As you know they produce high and midbass very nice. To correct my Lack of deep bass I visited Circuit Sh?tty. I tried the Polk psw-140. A nice sub but pricey for what it was. I then traveled to Best Buy and saw this monster. Going back to my younger years and my trusty D-12's I had in 83', I assumed they must be the best kick ass subs for any use. $500 lighter and 3 days later I want to take it back fast! When I took it out the box one of the ports fell
out! I had to glue it back. This gave me a birds eye view of the amp. It reminded me of a cheap car amp with a volume.
There was no insulation at all in the box for damping. This sub was uncapable of producing a realistic bass kick. A bass guitar sounded ok. After a kick was produced it had a sound it added on its own. Try Hotel California by the eagles, and play the DTS track. You will see what i mean FAST! Another gripe I have is with the auto on. Mine shut down every 9 minutes and could not track the sub out voltage on my reciever worth a damn. I had to turn the volume up half way to get it to kick on. Save your money and buy a Paradigm or Velodyne. A true shame. This company could be the answer to the poor man if they really tried.

Weakness:

Boomy sound on some material.

Works very well. Able to fill average size room with lots of bass. Sounds very good. Did home tests and sub plays down to 24 Hz, which is plenty low for the price.
