Strength:

great spec's,music(if you use a sub in music).

Weakness:

build quality,woofer/cabinet intergration,bass below 25Hz,room placement.

I used this sub in my HT,and boy was I dissappointed. The spec's state the sub goes down to 14Hz,but when I used the frequency sweep on the THX Optimode option on my T2 disc the sub was inaudible at about 25Hz,when I use my smaller, less expesive, but better Paradigm ps1000 the test sweep shakes my walls. The build quality is not worth $700,and the cabinet creates horrible distion at loud levels and with lower frequencies(do to the large woofer size and small terribly braced vented cabinet).Face it, anyone who would buy a 15 inch sub want's a lot of quality bass and this sub does not deliver as promised in the spec's,but if you must audition this sub PLEASE,PLEASE bring the following dvd's that will challenge this sub( THE HAUNTING scene 16,FUGITIVE train reck scene,SAVING PRIVATE RYAN any scene,ANTZ the scene at insect-topia,when the huge foot come crashing,DESPORADO the second bar scene shoot out, basically any movie that has really deep bass should show you this sub cant handle deep bass without woofer, and cabinet distortion.

Strength:

Loud- fairly fast

Weakness:

Boomy

This is an update of a review I did less than 2 weeks ago. I ended up returning this speaker after one week. It turned out to be a bit boomy and not as tight as I had thought. I ended up buying a Polk PSW 650. It is not as loud but you will not crank the DT PF 15TL+ up much more than half way anyhow. The Polk Audio Sub 650 has 2- 10" Subs in a beautiful cabinet and seems to be quicker and more accurate with music at any rate. The jury is still out for movies/DVD's. Plus setting up the Polk was so much easier and with the two 10" woofers the sound filled my living room so much better at a lower volumne. I could barely believe my eyes when I looked at the sound meter level as I was adjusting all my speakers in my system and the Polks were so much better at filling the living room. Good luck....

Strength:

Great foundation. Amazing for movies. Excellent for music if set up properly.

Weakness:

No real weaknesses.

Nice solid sub. Great lows. Plenty of power for punch. Exceptionally quick slew rate. Digs extremely low well into the subharmonics and well below human ear range. Extremely capable for any type of music/movie. Most of the folks below don't know that any sub won't sound good unless you set it up properly. Speaker placement is VITAL to it sounding good. Each and every room is different. Cableing is also extremely important, too! I found that it's better with my system to actually run out of the Yamaha's pre outs into the sub, then back into the receivers Pre ins. This also lets you utilize the sweepable crossover on the sub to best fit it to your speakers as well. I use Monster Cable for all my RCA and Speaker runs. Remember that the sub will only sound as good as the material it receives!

For those folk who actually think that the Sunfire and M&K or the Velodyne sound better, you owe it to yourselves to learn how to set it up. THD on the Sunfire stinks! The Velodyne is too muddy due to extremely slow slew rates on the amplifier. The M&K almost comes close, but can't dig as deep at the SPLs that the Definitive can.

Bottom line is that the Definitive is the best bang for the buck. I challenge any manufacturer to come up with something nearly as good for the money....

Strength:

Tight loud and accurate bass

Weakness:

????Good question

I have only had this Sub a few days but am very impressed by the tight bass and the speed in which it reacts and goes well with the rest of my speakers. I would not turn my P.A. PSW450 up that loud simply because it would boom as opposed to having a tight quick bass. No problems with the D.T. PF15TL. It is very quick and and accurate and now I realize what I had been missing in my home theater sound. Even with music this speaker picks up the variations in the low bass frequencies. Take a listen!

Strength:

Price/performance ratio

Weakness:

Too small power cord

This subwoower is good at the price but is mainly oriented for home theater use. If you want to use it also for music, here are my recommendations:
1- use fast, tight and extented interconnects like dh labs bl1 series II (these interconnects are extremely fast and good for bass extension and control)
2- replace the power cord by a good power cord (like the Bob Crump design power cord). This will improve greatly the overall performance. The replacement is relatively easy to do (1 hour work). (For people desiring to try this upgrade, i have some Bob Crump power cord left, please contact me)
3 - reduce the rear port volume by around 40% with some air foam; this will help get tighter and cleaner bass

With these easy to do tricks, this subwoofer will perform like a much more expensive subwoofer.

Strength:

Excellent frequency response, this one goes down to 14 Hz. 500 watt amp, many hook up options. Excellent crossover. Continuous phase control.

Weakness:

Owners Manual could be better. Lacks different finish options. Not the prettiest looking beast, it intended to be listened to, not looked at.

This Sub can compete favorably with subs costing twice as much money. Large driver and powerful amp move lots of air without lots of effort. This is a great bargain and it will rock the house!

Strength:

Great sound for music and movies

Weakness:

makes a thud sound whenever I turn on my receiver

this sub has great sound and can really shake the
walls of my house when it's less than halfway turned
up. however it does make an annoying sound whenever
I turn on my receiver. I have it hooked up to the
Lfe input but I am considering hooking it up another
way if will elimnate the sound it makes at start up.
My last sub did not make this sound so I'm not sure
what to make of it. If anyone can offer some insight
on this problem I would be very greatful.

Strength:

It provides that extra "punch" that music, and often movies call for. Versatile, good for movies and very good for music.

Weakness:

The listening room you put it in, will need a lot of work in order to get the the clean and deep bass that the unit really has to offer.

The PF15TL+ is a great sub. (The price makes it even more attractive) For under $1000, your best bet is either the Velodyne CT-150 or the Def. Tech. PF15TL+. Both of them are petty much worth the money, and they both perform astoundingly well for there price. From here on its simply your personal taste that should lead you in deciding which one you like better. As I said, the PF15TL+ delivers that extra "kick" to your music and movies making your listening experience more dramatic. The Velo just scares me with its emphasis on the lower bass frequencies, although in my opinion the experience that the PF15TL+ provided was closer to the ideal bass for both movies and music.
I'd just like to point out, that as with all subs, this one is also highly room dependent. I dont mean that you need to build a new room or anything, but you must consider various types of room/wall treatment to reduce problems such as reverberation, frequency loss, standing waves, and boominess or one-note bass. I can garuntee that 98% of all listening rooms will have at least 2 of these problems ruining the quality of your system. I dare say that your room is the most important part of your system, since it determines how the sound waves that propogate will sound to the listener. Room treatment will make your entire system sound the way it really should be, not like you hear in most audio stores, but how it was recorded in the first place..in a room that had minimal distrubance.
Anyway, I give the PF15TL+ 5 stars for both value and overall and recomend it to anyone who is looking for the most "bang for the buck" at under $1000.

Velodyne CT-150; the others in this price range dont even stand there ground in comparison to the PF15TL+, so I won't even mention them.

I was blown away by the performance of this subwoofer. I played track #10 of one of SEAL's CD. The bass was soooo deep and loud!!!For about $700, this is a real bargain. I recommend it highly both for music and home theater.

The Def Tech PF15TL is remarkable, from Holly Cole and Diana Krall to Requiem and Aida to Amadeus and Twister this sub performs.
It can be musical one moment and explosive the next. A great all around perfomer.

Look no further under $1000. Many prefer it to the Sunfire II...
