I spent last evening test driving my new PF 15TL. All I can say is WOW!! I teamed up the sub with my Yamaha R-V905 receiver and Pioneer DV-414 DVD player. The results were absolutely amazing. I had been using a Velodyne F1200, which is a fantastic sub by the way, but it was having trouble keeping up with the Dolby Digital soundtracks. My fear when switching from the Velodyne to the non servo 15TL was excessive boominess. That issue was quickly put to rest the minute I played the "Bright Boy Alert" chapter on the True Lies DVD. This sub hits incredibly hard, fast, and clean. The couch beneath me felt as if it were about to explode right along with the action on the screen. Items placed around the room on book shelves were literally falling to the floor. That was the physical punch I was missing with the F1200. The musical tracks sounded just as crisp and clear. The list price on th PF 15TL is 699.00 but I was able to get for a steal at 579.00 from my local home theater boutique. Check it out for yourself and I think you'll bring it home the same day.

THIS SUB CANNOT COMPETE WITH THE PARADIGM PW 2200 TRIED THEM BOTH WITH MY SYSTEM THE PF15TL SOUNDED GREAT UNTIL I BROUGHT HOME THE PARADIGM PW2200 WHAT A BIG SURPRISE THE PARADIGM WAS....TIGHT, LOW GUT WRENCHING BASS IN MOVIES AND CD PLAY...BUT THEY ARE BOTH GOOD SUBS, CHECK OUT THE PW 2200 YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID !!

I purchased this sub about eight months ago and have really enjoyed the performance gain. I listen to music and home theater and feel this sub plays both equally well. I listened to a few Paradigm sub but preferred the Def. Tech. I only wish that there was a place to buy Def. Tech. at a discount because I am looking at their 2004s.

This is the subwoofer I was going to buy - UNTIL I listed to the similiarly priced B&W ASW1000. I found the B&W to have a better bass punch for home theater.
As my second choice, I still found the 15TL to be a fine subwoofer in the price range with very good performance. Giving the B&W 5 stars I would give this 4.

Strength:

Very powerful

Weakness:

placement is crucial

An all around excelent subwoofer. Have had this for two years and enjoy listening to it. Definitive has a rich sound and not boomy when you have it placed properly. The transmission line does an excelent job of giving you that bottom octave. The amplifier I believe is a torodial design and realy puts out. My room is fairly small so dont have the full capability of it but reason for purchasing a powered sub was to have more control over the boomines of the room and it works well. Have it running with a pair of Tannoy's 605's and they are very dynamic together along with a 200 watt per channel Fosgate amplifier the music comes forth sweetly and unhindered. For the price I paid this was a bargain as I am on a budget with my system and have to buy what I can afford. Happy listening.

The best thing I have ever done for my system was buy a pair of NHT 2.9's. The worst thing I have ever done for my sytem was buy a pair of NHT 2.9's. What i mean is I am always trying to buy the best most expensive equipment to compliment these fine speakers. The last thing on my list was a new sub because I thought I would have to be spending $1500 to $2000 on a high quality sub to blend with my 2.9's. Not so. I've auditioned plenty of subs ranging from the M&K THX125 to the velodyne FSR 18. Anything I ever heard at the price point of the PF15 just flat out sucked! When i ran across this sub I was skeptical on how a $700 sub could be so raved about. My eyes were opened. It is deep (not as deep as advertised but my meter and test CD show real response down to about 18-19Hz)It does stay musical in the upper bas region as well and it will blast out T2 canal seen with great authority. I know the Velo is a better sub when you are really being critical on your listening, but for tripple the price? No way. I picked my unit up for $550 and it was the best "cheap" piece of equipment I have ever bought.

Strength:

Very good bass accuracy and extremely affordable

Weakness:

Only a few stores carry them (Hard to get them to compete for my business).

This is the best sounding under $1000 sub out there.
It sounds very good in home theater and can be adjusted to
blend "seamlessly with the main speakers when listening to 2 channel audio (a difficult thing to do).
I currently have a Harmon Kardon AVR-85 receiver, Infinity Overture 3's for the mains and Infinity Overture 1's for center and surround channels. An existing Infinity BU-2 sub(this is loud and boomy). MIT interconnects and high end Monster Cable speaker wire. A Sony DVD player and a Toshiba
monitor.
I want to upgrade to Parasound pre/pro and amp and possibly Martin Logan or Definitive Technology speakers.
I will not part with this Def/Tech 15TL sub!

I may purchase an additional 18TL to compliment.
Don't doubt, Buy this sub!!! Mine sounded average at the
store but I trusted the published reviews and bought it.
After installing in my home, a smile ,that only comes from knowing I got a good deal, came over my face.............

Strength:

Bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Vinyl clad enclosure.

Bought this sub from this site actually. I had a Velodyne F1200 sub and sold it about a year ago. Come to find out I really missed the bass in movie soundtracks. I have a modest home theatre system comprised of Marantz AV600 Pre/Pro, Marantz DP870 AC3 pro, 3 NAD 216 THX amps, Pioneer CLD-D704 Laserdisc player, Audio Alchemy DTI & DAC, Sony DVD 3000 DVD player, RCA DSS w/Dobly Digital, Toshiba Sat. Rec. w/10FT dish, JVC 6900 SVHS VCR, Yamaha CDC-835 CD player and cables by Tara, Monster, Audioquest, Cardas, Wireworld and Straight Wire. Now my speakers are all Definitive Technology so that's one reason I chose the sub. Secondly, the reviews in the mags were positive as well as the reviews here by fellow owners of this sub. I have it hooked up to my LFE out on the Marantz DP870 with XLO ERSW cable and I must say it does everything it suppose to. I have the crossover on the sub out of the picture by using it's bypass position and let the Marantz components use the LFE crossover settings. I also have the volume adjusted with Radio Shacks db meter via Video Essentials test tracks for speaker and sub setup. I'm impressed!

Strength:

Extreme subsonic, accurate bass.

Weakness:

I dont have two of them.

I would like to start by saying that I have been on a very long quest for a very good all around sub, I have owned the PARADIGM PDR-10 good sub but not low or loud enough, I also owned the Klipsch KSW-15 very very good sub but it does not reach subsonic levels (ie the teens). I was always curious about the Definitive B&W and Velodyne subs all are rated high and claim to reach down to subsonic levels. Well I found a dealer who had Velodyne and B&W subs, I had already purchased a Definitive Tech PF15TL unheard and when I recieved it I took it to the dealer to do a one on one comparason. The dealer only had one brand of velodyne the F-1800WR 18" sub and the B&W ASW1000 12" sub, and my DEF TEC PF15TL 15" sub we tried everything from jazz(Diana Krall, George Duke etc) to R&B and rap. On the Nutty ProfessorII soundtrack track 11 their is a bass note that reaches down into the subsonic region and of the three subs the PF15TL was the only one that held on and shook the room on that bass note and believe it or not the Velodyne actually started to pop and crackle on that note, the B&W simply could not do anything with the note but it did not give out. I have noticed that the PF15TL can handle just about anything you throw at it, and most importantly it reaches way down into the subsonic region where you can feel all the deep bass rather than hear it. Now dont get me wrong I am not knocking Velodyne as a whole, but as far as getting very low in bass the Definitive PF15TL kicked the Velodyne F-1800XR's butt, but the velodynes SPL was higher than the PF15TL,s, were as the B&W I feel are overpriced and over rated subs ( Im talking about the ASW1000) I cannot comment on the other models as I have not auditioned them, but for the money I really seriously doubt you will find a better sub, and I know if you look at most of these reviews just about everybody says the same thing, but this is really truly the real deal when it comes to subs, If you can find one they are probably going for pretty cheap, and if your in the market for a sub you should definately scoop one or better yet two of these beasts up they will not dissapoint, this is truly the best bang for your buck sub, it deserves 10 stars.

P.S I also auditioned this against a Paradigm PW2200, and I must say that the Paradigm is a very tight sub but it could not hit you in the gut like the DEF PF15TL, and it did not have the output of the PF15TL. With all this being said I know you really cant compare a 12,15, or 18" sub to one another but all of these subs I auditioned are very high quality subs claiming to reach subsonic levels, and some did better than others, but when you start considering the options that come with the sub versus the performance and price you can narrow down what you want, so personally in my opinion if a 15" $700.00 sub out performs an 18" $2000.00 sub well you do the math.

It seems that someone was offended by the truth.(imo)
Everybody is entitled to their opinion.
Anyways, my system consists of the following:
Paradigm Studio 80(f)
Paradigm Studio 60(r)
Paradigm Studio CC(c)
Paradigm PW-2200 Sub
(2) D-box David 300 subs to compliment front main channels

As you can see I am no millionare either. My stuff was chosen by me because i liked the way it sounds. I have spent countless hours setting it up, and the compliments never stop. As you can see, I have two subs to dig deep for the fronts, so the lfe sub's job is fairly easy, and the bass in the room helps to smooth any additional bass, and visa-versa. I gave the sub fair break-in, and fair trial. As an example, in the haunting dts-es, when it gets cold after the pounding on the door, the bass goes deep, into the realm of physical presence, and the pf15 did the bass, but not really that loud, and the noise coming from the box was almost as loud as the actual sound. Now, I am no amateur, and I am not biased, the def tech sub just didn't sound that great to me. It could have been a junk
amp, or cone, or maybe not. This sub is better than most, and definitely go have a listen. Just don't expect to fall to your knees, and if you do, all the better. Since this is mainly just a reply,I will give a good mark.
