This is quite to sub! It's mated with my Dahlquists and they all work very well together. It's a versatile sub and handles music and movie media equally well. I'm most pleased with the fact that it's only there when I want it there. Once the phase switch is set correctly you can't tell where it's at in the room. Very clean and tight but it still goes way down. You have to insert a foam plug into one of the ports and then move a two-postition switch to its 27 hz position to get the lowest extension. Removing the plug and moving the switch to the 35 hz position yields to highest output (better suited to movies). It's kinda goofy making this change but still very effective. I really like this sub so far and look forward to many years of listening pleasure. I agree that it may be the best tweak to a sound system for under $500. I got mine for $440 including shipping.

Strength:

small size, big boom...great build quality....great tech support

Weakness:

auto cut-off too short....

ive been living with this sub for a little over a month...it replaced a ksw-12 klipsch, which i had for a few weeks....i really love this sub...great big boom for such a small box....great price and great value....the klipsch just sounded to sloppy for my tastes....i placed this hsu sub in the same location and everything came into light....sounds great for music and movies...the only thing i dont like at all is the short timer on the auto cut-off...it is only set at about 5 minutes...im going to contact hsu and see if there is a fix for that...i would prefer a 15 minute auto off....because there are many long winded vocal only passages in movies nowadays....and you can hear the sub cut back on when the lows start back up...other than that, this sub is a great buy for the money...check it out for yourself...package came with great manual, 2 pages of great low bass movies and music examples...and also a cd with great low bass cuts to test out your sub with...hsu goes the extra mile and that i love...im only giving a 4 rating overall because of the auto off....otherwise, perfect...

Strength:

Dead on accuracy and generous bass

Weakness:

None

I have been enjoying this subwoofer. The claims that the bass is both accurate and powerful, and that it blends really well with most speakers is true. Jazz and home theater sound incredible. I have Infinity RS-8s, a CC-3, and RS-3s for surrounds. Even though the RS-8s have built-in 100 watt subwoofers they are nothing compared to this on e subwoofer. I think that this subwoofer really excels for someone looking for a sub that can keep up with the other speakers while listening to music and one that will give you that "I'm there feeling" during action movies. After auditioning many subs I am really glad I got this one. As many have said, it is $500 well spent ($470 actually, including shipping).

Strength:

Compact, Excellent Slam on Movies.

Weakness:

Sub-par performance on music and subtle movie scenes.

I auditioned this sub for about a month and found it lacking in too many fundamental areas. In fact it only impressed me as an HT sub and only on action scenes. This sub hits hard but does not work well on other material. Tone definition on music and subtle movie scenes is sub-par at best. The subwoofers mentioned above are much better performers. Anyway, always try to audition various models in your home enviroment before deciding.

Strength:

Very clean and accurate base

Weakness:

Does not come back on after a timeout

The HSU VTF-2 is a great subwoofer!!! I have it connected to the B speaker output of my Denon receiver for listening to music only and it delivers a clean and accurate base. It took a few tries to get it setup to my liking with the music I listen to. The unit is placed in the right corner of my living room next to the main system. I solved the power up problem by putting the entire system on a switchable power strip.

Prior to purchasing the VTF-2 I listened to several other makes of subwoofers, mostly in the discount stores, and found their base to be very harsh and they rattled alot.

I would recommend the HSU VTF-2 to anyone who likes listening to music.

Strength:

Amazing sound, deep bass, great for HT and music, solid construction, price.

Weakness:

a bit larger than what I expected looking at pictures but not really an issue.

This sub really sounds fantastic. I've tried all of the key DVD action flicks and this sub has amazing clarity and very deep, tight bass. I haven't given it much of a workout musically but for what I've tried the sub blends in very well with my Mirage AVS 500 system. And that is really impressive considering the range of the Mirage (90hz and above). I especially like the bass extension settings on the sub...you have all sorts of options.

I'm lucky that I live in San Diego and I was able to go demo the sub at Jeff's Sound Values first. It will go much louder than I'll ever need and I have a pretty decent-sized room (21' x 16' x 10'(ceiling)). I know others have mentioned the auto shut off as a problem. I spoke with Dr. Hsu about this before buying and he mentioned that the shut off is set for 30-35 minutes (not five) and it will turn on immediately after the first bass note. I have not run into any problems with the auto shut down function personally. I was thinking of ordering the SVS for a while but now I'm glad I went with the VTF-2. For the price, I don't think anyone can go wrong with this sub.

Strength:

Powerful. Great for music and home theater. Absolute best subwoofer for the price!

Weakness:

None!

I've been using my HSU VTF-2 for a couple of months now (after doing a significant amount of research). Basically, nobody I have ever heard has made a negative comment about this subwoofer. For the $450-500 price tag, essentially no one has excluded the HSU VTF-2 in their top 2 or 3 (and most include it as #1).
This is my first sub and I use it about 2/3 home theater, 1/3 music. Boy I thought I had a pretty good system for home theater. But, WOW; if you don't have a subwoofer, you are missing out! And this is an excellent one!
I have a fairly good sized living room and this 150W 10" subwoofer shakes the house (watching Phantom Menace was f...ing awesome). Seriously!
I wasn't sure how I would like it for music. I listen to a variety of music (from classic rock to punk/alternatice). The subwoofer sounds great with it all. It's difficult to tell that the bass is coming from the subwoofer; it just sounds like it's all coming from the fronts (one sign of a good subwoofer).
SO if you are in the market; pick yourself up the HSU VTF-2 and you won't be sorry. For some the 450-500 price tag is hefty. For me it was to. But you want something that will last and won't need to be replaced in a couple years; fork out the $450!!! Believe me it's a bargain at this price.

Strength:

Size, sound quality

Weakness:

Amp runs hot, cabinet not spiked, spring-lock terminals, looks.

Purchased primarily to augment bass for musical listening NOT foundation-splitting, rafter-rattling sound effects. The VTF-2 does this very well, not only for kick drums and harder rock, but for acoustic bass as well. I'm very please with the audio quality of this sub.

The nits listed above haven't really reduced my overall opinion, but it would be nice to have the cabinet spiked for better mechanical coupling, and some sturdy screw terminals instead of the cheapo spring type. No other review mentions how hot the amp runs (mine runs too hot to maintain more than a few seconds of hand contact). I may call Hsu and see if this is normal.

Not exactly crazy about the looks and was disappointed they abandoned the tube look of their other subs. But I think the value is incredible and the audio performance far outwieghs the minor weaknesses (minus .5 star).

Read a lot about this sub lately so I decided to give it a try. WOW !! No review I have read ever seems to be right but Audio / SGHT and Sound and Vision are spot on here.
This is without a doubt the best under $1000 sub around.
Its so accurate and blends so well.
If you like accurate loud deep bass for $500 This is the sub for you. If you like boomy distorted bass look elsewhere.
Best Woof I have used No doubt about it.
Ten points and well done Dr Hsu.
