Strength:

good, clean tight base

Weakness:

No remote to turn on unit

I purchased the unit from Ubid. Had this shipped FedEx to avoid any type of damage but it still came beated up(box that is). The unit is brand new. I followed the advices on selecting front, center, rear to small, subwoofer to on in order for the LFE on the receiver to work properly. It has a tremendous amount of bass. My couch literally vibrates during the helicopter scene crash in “ The Matrix”, gain was only at the 6 position. A pretty decent sub for the price.

Strength:

Does not use much electicity since it does not work.

Weakness:

Hardly any sound comes from sub.

Just received the sub today. I cannot describe how dissappointed I am. After trying several different way to hook up sub and 6 beers later to help calm my anger, I gave up. I am going to probably send it back to UBID but not until I share with them some carefully chosen words. Please do not buy this sub from UBID. I wish I would have reviewed this product sooner. It says alot about both companies when they try to push damaged goods thru to the public.

Strength:

Hard to say

Weakness:

Yes

Just a note to followup on the message above. I did increase the output level on the subwoofer (an option on my Parasound preamp/processor) to 8dB which helped the situation but it rumbled like a rusty old fender. Something is not right! When I replaced the HPS1000 with my AT 252PBM it just about blew the books of the shelf!

Anyway, I called uBid and they authorized it's return. Problem with the sub...no problem with uBid, they were courteous and efficient! Thanks uBid!

Strength:

A very solid subwoofer

Weakness:

No auto power on

First off, let me say that I know infinity makes
pretty flakey subwoofers in their BU series and even
the HPS-500 doesn't have a very flat frequency response.

However, after having a chance to evaluate and
measure the HPS-1000, I've been pleasantly surprised.
I considered the HPS-1000 primarily for extension
since I already have 2 NHT 1259 diy subs handling
35Hz and up; and an array of tactile transducers for
subsonic earthshaking stuff.

The infinity actually measured reasonably flat to 21Hz,
so I think the 18Hz extension claim was in-room(marketing)
and not near field. I mass loaded the passive radiators
with some epoxy and washers to get a flat 18Hz extension.

To do so, I had to take apart the sub. Build construction
and materials are top notch. Let me start with the drivers.
The 15" downfiring driver is actually made by JBL. It
features 3 inch voice coil, large rubber surround, huge
double stacked magnet and solid frame. Built like a tank.

The passive radiators are not cheap either. They are
actually a sandwich of two inverted radiators also
with rubber surround. This method helps the radiator
from cantelievering and increases the usable displacement.

One gripe is that you have to take out the baffle to
remove the driver. The baffle is solid 1 1/2 inch MDF.
Overall its a very solid subwoofer that since has been
discontinued, you can probably get a killer price at
a firesale.

One more note for subwoofers shoppers. Don't let anyone
sell you on the this sub 25Hz extension for the following
reasons:

1. It will be expensive or take alot of floor space.

2. Typical room gain will probably extend the reponse
to 20Hz.

3. You can't hear it below 20Hz, you feel it.

4. Which brings me to my final point. If you want to
feel your bass, get tactile transducers. Its better
and cheaper.

If you want to take a look at the insides of the HPS-1000
I took some pics. Just goto this link:

Strength:

Mind Blowing

Weakness:

Can't think of any.

I like to crank it slightly over halfway and watch this 90 pound monster pick itself up and actually walk across the floor.

My floor is slab on grade and from 5 feet away it can feel like a jackhammer breaking up the concrete. I enhance the visceral, gut-rending trauma with a couple of stereo-wired Aura transducers in my couch. I have read of people saying it will flutter your trouser cuffs in a small room, but my home theater is in my outdoor living room , so I haven't experienced that yet.

I've actually found myself buying some of those Godawful CD's they use for Auto Sub Competitions in order to really plumb the depths. I also enjoy waking up the neighborhood with Telarc's sampler with 1812 Overture - the cannons are awesome.

You gotta get one of these and become a bass freak, your neighborhood will never be the same again.

Strength:

Amazing, heartpounding, floorshaking bass. Simply phenomenal on DD and DTS soundtracks.

Weakness:

HUGE! A little heavy on two-channel music. No auto-off feature. Remote would be real nice.

Picked this up at a local dealer, his last one, floor model for $900 plus tax. Have seen it on the net for less as other reviewers have pointed out, but shipping this thing (just under 100 pounds) canels the savings out. Still in my 30 day trial period so if someone knows where I can order it and still save $100 bucks (from a reputable dealer), please let me know.

Strength:

Incredable output,convenient front controlls,good finish&fit.

Weakness:

Somewhat poor build quality for the amp houseing.loose controll over 70hz

First of all the mentioned review above is from the Home Theater Magazine's October Issue.
This sub is very good for movies,it seems to concentrate on the frequencies between of 25-60,were it can do the most to enchance the all around you feel. You feel like the whole room became a giant sub,it has authority and controll. You feel it as much as you hear it.I listen most of the time at reference levels[105db peak per Dolby],and the sub can belt out 110-112db at my seating position, more than enough for most people.Yet I don't hear anything that it would make beleive, that I'm overdriving them,in other words,no distorsion.
Ok how about music?
Well it's extension is very good[below 20hz],but if you like Organ music look elswhere, for everybody else this sub would be fine for music,as long as you keep the crossover setting around 60hz or so,provided your mains can handle everything above that level. If you have tiny satellite speakers than this sub is not for you.

Weakness:

poor performance from rca input

This is the current situation with the sub output problem from Infinity this is a copy of my email to Infinity with their response.Hi Curt,
We have recently come up with a simple modification that will
increase the output of the amp. It involves adding one resistor and one
capacitor near the amp module. The service bulletin (tech info we supply to
our service centers) is in the process of being written. I will keep you
posted on the status.

Has a solution been reached regarding the poor output performace of the
HPS-1000 when connected to the RCA left/right in's from a receiver?(Yamaha
RV-1105 subwoofer out)

I previously had just one connection to the sub(left), just like my $250
advent AV550s with 500 watt bob carver amp and it had plenty of gain(lfe
in), yet now with even a y-connector at both subs and the receiver gain is
still not even up to advent's level, you would think two hps 1000's with a
"claimed" output of 1000 watts each would blow my advent off the planet,
these subs are connected on the subwoofer output which is y connected
split to each sub and y connected to each sub for both outputs, noticed an
improvement in gain after y connecting at the subs but still not much
more, someone suggested a phono stereo preamplifer to boost signal
strength to the subs.

The technican I spoke to suggested I purchase the y connections and it did
make some/not much improvement, he was aware of this issue and said they
were working on a solution, please contact me once a fix has been made.

Strength:

(over)powerful bass, tweakable, front panel controls, able to blend in w/ system with great ease

Weakness:

could probably use a remote control for power on/off...

I've had this sub 48 hrs. now and I am finding that I am rediscovering "lost frequencies" in material ranging from DVDs to music CDs.

I originally sought to get a Velodyne FSR18, but at $1500-$2000 where I live, it was out of my price range. I had a change to hear an FSR18 do a scene from "Starship Troopers" and the bass was clear, yet powerful.

When I unpacked my HPS-1000 which I ordered via ubid.com, I tried a movie with some great content ("Aliens") and found
that I had no problem matching the Velodyne's quality with
this sub. This is most impressive given that it cost
me 1/2 the price of the Velodyne!

Extremely low frequencies claim to go to 18hz, but I haven't tested it to prove that... but I will say that it can rumble my house, and that's saying something. The bass permeates the room, making it appears that the sound is all around you. This is an excellent sub for home theater...

That said, after trying it on music, I've found it's equally at home in that setting. I believe this may be the best bargain in subs right now.

Strength:

Floor shaking bass for home theater; good stability

Weakness:

Finesse takes back seat to power

I bought this subwoofer for a system that is used almost exclusively for home theater. It delivers low frequency effects with authority that my Definitive Technology PF1500 lacked. A servo-controlled subwoofer may handle music with more delicacy, but it is hard to top the HPS1000 subwoofer in home theater applications. I am thrilled with the sound and pleased with the appearance.
There is an excellent review of the HPS1000 at etown.com that motivated my purchase.
I ordered my subwoofer from Scott at soundpros.com. He owns a HPS1000 and was both knowledgeable and helpful.
