Strength:

Not sure about the really important bits yet (the sound) but I can say it appears quite sturdy and well built, with one exception.

Weakness:

I too have the low LFE output problem (more on that below) and the front 'panel' which houses all the controls seems a bit...er... flimsy compared to rest of this monster.

Hello Everyone,

I braved the UBid waters for this great deal after hearing a friends HPS-1000. I was truly impressed with it's presence and extension and it definitely seemed tighter than my Paradigm PS-1000.

FedEx delivered the sub undamaged. Both the box and the sub appeared to be in perfect condition.

When I plugged in the HPS-1000 to the same outlet as the Paradigm and used the exact same LFE out cable (Monster Z series cable and Integra 7.1 receiver), same source material, etc.. I had to turn it up all the way to hear even a faint thumping. I knew I had the LFE problem right away, drat!

I did try it hooked up directly to my DVD player's (Denon 2800) analog stereo outs and it worked fine, just as everyone elses did. Obviously this isn't a solution, I was just comparing my symptoms to others'.

That night I went out and picked up a Phono Pre-Amp from Best Buy just to see if it worked. I was not indending to use it permanently but I was really excited to hear this thing perform at ALL. Well, $27+tax later I hear an awful, muddy, over amplified, pile of unlistenable mush. Darn!

I then had what I thought was a brilliant idea (don't get excited, it didn't work well at all). My receiver has phono inputs and I think there are pre-amps on them. So... I connected the LFE out to the Phono in (left) and then I plugged the subwoofer into the TAPE OUT (left). I then set the record out to tape while I played 5.1 DVD material (this receiver allows you to listen to one source and send a different source to 'record out'). I was hoping to fool the receiver into boosting the LFE Out signal with the phono-in pre-amps and funnel that through the tape loop right into the subwoofer. Well, it worked.. but it sounded just like it did when I used the $27 pre-amp from Best Buy.

I e-mailed UBid about potentially returning or exchanging this thing and have heard nothing back as of yet.

I took it to a local Infinity repair center and hope to hear something soon. I informed them that there was a service bulliten out for this problem and they pulled it up right away... so I HOPE they can fix it. I hope they don't drop it either. You should have seen the look on their faces when I hauled that thing in there, hehe. Actually, that makes me nervous... they've obviously never worked on one before... lord help me (grin).

Well, that's it for now. I'll post a follow up with the thrilling conclusion to this story.

Good luck to you all and thanks for the heads up with the LFE problem. Knowing that this was a known issue sure makes the phone calls easier :)

-Dave

PS - Current rating is at about 4 so I'm rating it a 4. I can't recommend this product until I actually hear it.

Phenominal. Easy acess controls on the FRONT, not the back like most subs. Fires straight into the floor, the way moving rocking sound was meant to be. Shakes the whole house.

MUCH better value than ANY velodyne. You would have to pay twice as much (or more) to get the equivalent in a velodyne model.

But don't take my word for it. There is an excellent comparison review of this sub with 3 other subs in StereoReview's Sound and Vision magazine (check your local library) 1999 issues (not sure which month).

Strength:

Stylish, Easy access controls on front.

Weakness:

I guess a remote would be nice..

WoW! I use it 98% of the time for watching dvd movies.. I had an Infinity Bu-80 before. It was a decent sub but didn't give as much "thump" as i wanted for watching dvds with great sound effects.. But this sub.. do you have seatbelts on your couch? Get some before buying this sub!! It hits HARD when it needs to.. DvD= a great sub! As far as music goes.. I have only listened to one CD. It was a competition CD from Iasca.com.. do NOT turn the volume on your receiver up more than 1/4 of the way!!!!! You don't have to with this sub!! It hit SO hard.. amazing! It felt like the "rumble" was moving from one side of the room to the other.. BTW.. I picked this baby up from shop4.com for $750.. cheapest I saw it was $1250 elsewhere. If you can get this sub for under $1000,, Do it!! The only thing i'm worried about is finding a place in my living room for ANOTHER one!! Wife is gunna kill me when I get rid of the China Cabinet.

Strength:

tight, accurate, & powerful bass

Weakness:

major design flaw of plastic legs which were broken upon arrival. also the fact that the whole weight of the sub is on the plastic legs which sits on top of the foam packaging in the box (if infinity had only packaged the sub upside down so the cabinet is seated on the foam, the legs wouldn't have been broken).

Before receiving this sub, I didn't expect it to have nice, tight, accurate bass since I figured that it was designed to be sheer power and deep rumble, but to my amazement, it did. I love the way it sounds. I was already satisfied with my PB12 (which was a replacement for the PSWD-112) and didn't think that the HPS-1000 would blow it away, but it sure did. I believe that the HPS-1000 sub would have tighter and more accurate bass than the HPS-500 and the HPS-250 because it uses 2 passive radiators in a sealed enclosure versus a hyper-flared port in a vented enclosure on the other two models. My PB12 and PSWD-112 both sound a little boomier, but its bass isn't as tight or as accurate. So if anyone who want to have deep, powerful, and accurate bass, I recommend getting this sub from ubid or elsewhere (if you don't mind getting them with broken legs; I removed all 4 plastic legs and replaced them with nice wooden ones).

Strength:

Tremendous amount of BASS!!!

Weakness:

Size

Perfect bass, little or no distortion. Music and Movies truly come alive. Highly recommend for listeners who would like a lot more "thump" while watching DVD's or just listening to CD's. Matches perfectly with my Klipsch Quintets.
Careful when having it shipped by UPS, I received mine with slight damages on the legs of the sub. Minor issue, don't want the hastle of sending it back.
Sit back and enjoy!

Strength:

Bass is clean and powerful, especially low bass

Weakness:

Manual could be a little more informative and detailed

I wanted to let everyone know that the lfe input on my sub works perfectly. I just received it from ubid today and I am very pleased so far. The bass is very deep with no distortion. It was very cool to feel everything shaking before the first audible bass came in. It was litterally like waves of air. I have never had a sub that went this low. As far as hook ups go I am still experimenting with my system, but I can you that the lfe/sub-out on my receiver works great with this sub. I did find using a y adaptor at the sub,so that it plugged into both the left and right inputs, was a little better than just the single rca plugged into the left or the right. You can also plug you left and right preouts (mains) from your receiver, and utilize the high and low pass filters built into the sub-amp. Almost too many hook-up options really. The idea that ubid bought and is selling subpar units is incorrect. First, Infinity would be stupid to do so, it's not worth damaging their good reputation for something like that, and second these are new units how in the heck would infinity know they were subpar. My experience with infinity products has been nothing but great, excellent build and component quality. I feel it was a steal for the price I paid. Sound quality is fantastic, tight and low like bass should be. I recently auditioned the velodyne ct150 and I can tell you that it comes nowhere close to this sub in performance. It is simply not in the same league. Definitely recommended if you can find one.

Strength:

Weakness:

doesnt work

Let me be the first to tell everyone that I received my HPS1000 from uBid in perfect condition. Plugged it in..performed the calibration..and virtually no response from the RCA out. Checked all the connections..switches on my Parasound PSP1500 and they are right. I am using LCR full range and sub full range...just for comparisons I used LCR/Sub THX crossover..same problem. Interesting if I push the normal/direct button there is very little difference. It has the output of a bose table top radio! I don't care if it works in speaker level mode..I want it to work sub out RCA. I'll let you know how things go...but be warned!
