Strength:

Has a good sound when it works

Weakness:

Failed after 1 year (big surprise)

Well, it's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who has had problems with this sub. Ours started rumbling in the middle of the night (what is it about the middle of the night that causes these things to puke?) I thought it was a thunder storm. Luckily when I bought it, I also bought the extended warranty from Best Buy. I figured it would be a good investment since the unit was a floor model. I took the rumbling sub back to the store, and they said it would be 3-6 weeks before I got it back. It was back within 2 weeks. I have to commend BB for that. They said it was a bad solder joint. Hopefully that will be the last time I have to take it back, but from reading these postings, that would be a miracle. At least I still have a few years left on the warranty. Guess it's a good thing they don't make these anymore.

Strength:

Good sound, cranks out surprisingly much for a 10

Weakness:

SOB Broke steer clear, it's a POS

Ok I bought it for a little bit off when they were selling the last of 'em at circuit city. I was real proud of it too, beat the Sh*t out of what my brother's pushing. Then after alot of quite frequent use, and right after my damned warrenty ran out, I woke up to a sort of buzzing thumbing sound, unplugged it and fell asleep. Came here and saw the capacitor selection, looked into it, and that was still in good shape. Upon closer examination, a small section of the motherboard was fried.
I was one of those who read some warnings here, and bought it anyways, Don't be retarded like me, and heed this warning, steer clear of the JBL subs.

Strength:

Lot's o' boom for the buck.

Weakness:

Bowel movement inducing sound when it finally decides to blow up after the warranty period. Emits an incredible stench when it finally does go.

Well, I was able to squeeze 20 months of thunder out of the thing before it finally caved. Ripped the guts out of it and it blew a capacitor right off the board. I'm going to try and replace it this week with some ultra high-tech Radio Shack components to see if I can bring it back to life. A prior post had mentioned the same problem, hopefully that'll work. This way I can PLAN to replace it rather than suddenly being without a sub, then NEXT time it pukes its cookies, it's out the door!

Performance wise it worked better with HT over music, tended to be a bit boomy without constant adjustment.

In a nutshell, when it works it's a solid performer. Unfortunately it has all the reliability of an 85 Yugo. Look at all these posts! How bad is it when the majority of them have blown up?!? JBL, you can take this POS back. You just lost another customer.

Strength:

had good deep tones while it worked

Weakness:

It blew up, the same thing that is described by other reviewers. I awakened to find the sub giving off a loud beating noise, I thought it was some sort of electrical impulse causing the problem, but it wasn't. I havn't attempted to contact JBL but I had a quote of 175-200 dollars to fix it. Won't by JBL again. Any decent electrical product should have a long life.

Don't buy, save your money and look elsewhere.

Strength:

Great sound.

Weakness:

Nothing like there pro series for Djing mentioned above. Power amp and crossover sucks.

After about six month I had the same rumbling sound that everyone has talked about took it back to Circuit City and JBL fixed it under warranty. 3 weeks ago the same thing happed again (no warranty imagine that). The first time it was a cold sodder that was the problem this time sounds like the same problem. If JBL can't get their act togther on home audio they need to go back to pro series and concentrate on that instead cuz there going to lose in the audio market. Value rating is set to complete joke because if you decide to pay to get it fixed it will surpase the price of any other decent speaker. Complete waste cuz this thing has wasted my time getting it fixed the first time and trying to figure out what to do with it a second time. Anyone want a free subwoofer.

Every Speaker I own is JBL. I've had my DJ speakers for over 5 years and still kicking strong. I've bought the book shelf speakers to match the subwoofer and they are still kicking strong

Strength:

It blew up before the 1 year warranty expired.

Weakness:

It blew up.

This is my first sub. Will never buy JBL again.

I have to say Circuit City was easy to deal with when I took it back. It started making the very loud humming noise in the middle of the night 11 months after I purchased it. Used mainly for DVD movies and used very lightly.

Just took it back today. I bet it doesn't last long after I get it back. Live and learn.

Strength:

Tight bass, Loud and low for a 10" The price was right

Weakness:

rattled at first, I fixed it.
no on/off switch

I bought this product in december of '00 without coming here first, my warrenty has just run out, and after listening for hours on end every day, I'm happy to say that it hasn't blown up(yet). My selling point was that it has 50 more watts than most of the other 10's I've looked at, and it can handle them. I also liked that it was $200, wheras the others I was considering were around $300.
At first it rattled at higher levels, but I found out it was bumping into the speaker wires and moved them out of the way, problem fixed. There is plenty of insulation providing tight bass, and it doesn't mind playing loud, or for a 10" low(35hz). Overall, a really good product I'd recommend it to anyone who can't afford a Cerwin Vega, o Velodyne.
Now if only I could stop my wall from rattling...
