After recently blowing up a very expensive Onkyo sub, I was quite bummed that it would take me forever to find the right sub to use in my room. My spirits were lifted when we recently got a Circuit City, the only high-end retailer in town, and I went to see what they had. Now I love JBL speakers, we have a ton of them in the house for all kinds of applications and my home theater is no different. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need HUGE front l/r speakers, but clear, accurate speakers(not sattelites either, they suck), the bottom end of the spectrum is left up to the sub. So I see the JBL there for 299.00, so i buy it. It has a VERY clean digital amp (rare in home theater untill recently) and a solid 150 watts to pump to the 10" driver. Man does this thing pound of the bass! I mean a 10" with a digital 150 watt amp that goes down to 30Hz and lower with minimal distortion and it plays loud! It has an adjustable Hp/LP filters with speaker in/outs,etc., etc. Sounds great in Dolby Digital/DTS system of mine and will do fine untill I can get the JBL PSW-D112. Highly recommended for any application.

It is super sweet! Very deep pounding bass especially after about a week of use and breaking it in. It has good features that are used on many of the more advanced subwoofers. The sub can play the most deep bass and as loud as it can possibly go with very little sign of distortion. Next to the JBL PSW-112D it is the best mid-fi digital sub you can buy.

I bought this sub and it blew up after 4 days. Returned that one and the next one was blown right out of the box.. I was dissapointed and demanded my money back. Bought the 15 inch Advent and love it. I guess JBL missed badly on this sub.

Strength:

This is a good, hi-lo-fi/lo-mid-fi sub. Except that it is a piece of crap under the hood.

Weakness:

Built to last weeks longer than warranty.

It was priced and powered right. Why not? Decent performance for a year and even a "bonus month" outside warranty. Blew fuse and then ceased functioning. Fuse replacement no help. Had same rumbles and noise mentioned in the other dozens of sh*tty reviews here, thought they were my fault/apartment wiring faults. Ha.

After three months of email tag with JBL, they issued a UPS call tag and fixed it in three weeks. Hat's off for that, but now I know it's because they're trying to avoid lawsuits. Sold it on ebay for $160 (shipping INCLUDED) in the same box JBL sent in back in, unopened. God help the purchaser.

I'll never buy a Harman product again. Please don't you either. Customer service doesn't make up for this kind of crap.

Strength:

Low Pass and High Pass Filter. Phase switching. Good bass. Very musical and gels well in a small room

Weakness:

Speaker Line-in and Line-outs are not banana plugs.

I got one very cheap from ubid for about $142. Paid $30 for shipping. That's a lot but it came in 4 days from the west to the east.
I've a all JBL setup with HLS 620 and HLS Center and the MRV308 and a Carver 5.1 Sub. I got it because the Carver Amp blew and circuit city is right now repairing it.
Let's get to business.
The JBL is more musical than the carver and personally I'd prefer the Carver for more stereo routed throught he line-in's and the JBL for movies.
I tested it with Matrix and used the Stereophile Test CD 2 and 3 and the Video Essentials DVD to set it up. This thig rocks for the price u pay for an apartment home theater system.
I'll give it 5 for value and overall 4.5 that's about 5.

Strength:

Great of control of settings for sound and room size, great value

Weakness:

Take some work to tweek it to your room

I use the subwoofer with a pioneer vsx608 reciever, jbl hls820's and a Jbl center speaker. This sub woofer made the system happen, great with music and movies. I had to do alot of playing around to get it tweeked just right for my room
but that is normal with most sub woofers.

Strength:

The Bass is so real you can smell the explosions in your living room!

Weakness:

After 17 months (the same story)it blew!!

I have throughly enjoyed and had an awesome experience with the Subwoofer I purchased in July 1999. However, I was extremely disapointed to come home on my wedding day to find my home smelling like an electrical fire with a high-pitched buzzing sound coming from the JBL PSW-D110. Now I find myself among a large number of consumers with the same crappy experience! My experience so far with the customer service and the quality that JBL talks about so much in their marketing has MUCH to be desired. I know there may be a lemon or two in every batch, but come on--get real--this many?? The sub was awsome while it lasted, but I honestly wouldn't trust putting it back in my home (sounds like I am lucky to still have a home).

Strength:

Sound great, but I don't have any experience with any sub-woofers. Never had it turned up past 1/3 power

Weakness:

Fried after 17 month of minimal use

Unbelievable so many customers have the exact same problem. I just got mine back from Circuit City Service and haven't plugged it back in yet. Mine cracked and popped, scaring the daylights out of me and our newborn infant. After several phone calls I got a very nice service manager who agree to extend me a one time extension on the warranty. Now I know why. I wonder if this thing is a fire hazard?

Strength:

Decent lows with punch
Nice volume control

Weakness:

Blew up after 16 months

I was reasonably happy with this sub while it lasted. It was difficult to tune it so that it would sound well in both movies and music--which meant, of course, getting up to tune it with the reciever constantly. Nevertheless, it produced more than enough bass to keep me content.
I had no idea until I logged in here that so many would complain of the same thing I experienced. My wife told me that the sub was rumbling for no reason and naturally I assumed that there was something wrong with the reciever, or tv channel she was watching. But even when disconnected from the reciever it continued to rumble so loud I thought the woofer would blow. How convenient that JBL's warranty lasts justs long enough for the sub to survive. When the sub is dead, the warranty has JUST expired. I've gotten three estimates to fix this thing: $250, $175, and $175. Great. Thanks JBL. I'll be taking my business elsewhere and advising others to do the same.

Strength:

Surprisingly good bass for a 10" sub. Makes DVD movie
sound tracks come alive

Weakness:

Blew up after 17 months

Exactly as Cody's did, my PSW-D110 started making tremendously loud whomp, whomp noises. The stereo
system was not on, the sub woofer powered up and off it went. Scared the hell out of me. I actually ran outside to see if a helicopter was landing on, or near, my roof. The entire house was shaking and the noise deafening and difficult to track. Finally unplugged the speaker and I was able to hear again. Loved the speaker when it worked. Now, the decision; repair or replace. 4 stars for sound when working, 1 star overall because it broke just past the warranty period.
