Strength:

I wish I could've heard it!

Weakness:

my unit was defective = poor quality control

I read some good reviews here, decided to order it based on those good reviews, even though several other people here received bum units (I thought it wouldn't happen to me). A couple days after I ordered it (from J&R, $299+shipping), I came across the reviews for the Klipsch KSW-12 and was mighty impressed (eighteen reviews, each one five out of five stars). But it was too late to cancel my JBL PSW-D112, so I received it yesterday, unpacked it, hooked it up (minimal volume settings both on it and on the receiver), and all I got was a loud popping noise, and then it was dead, and that was it, the LED never even came on to show that the unit was on, it was just dead, like a fuse had blown or worse.
I was not happy. I spent good money on this, eagerly awaited its arrival, checked the shipping status frequently via the UPS website, even came home early from work just to make sure I would not miss the delivery, and then, after all the unpacking and setting up, I had to conclude that they did not even bother to turn this thing on at the factory, and that instead of quality control, they figure the customer can simply return it if there is a problem. Well that I did, but no more JBL for me, sorry. Am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Klipsch KSW-12 (vanns.com, $304+shipping). Sorry to push down the average even further, but quality control is important, because it means respect for the customer, and its absence means disrespect for the customer. Otherwise, based on the good reviews here, this sounds like it might be a very good subwoofer.

Strength:

NONE

Weakness:

It doesn't last more than a year

I will add my 2 cents...This sub SUCKS. Read the previous reviews....and you know just what happened to mine(fuses blowing immediatly). I will never buy another JBL product. I will toss this "just over 1 year old" sub right into the trash where it belongs.

Strength:

Well, the bass is tight and heavy! It can really kick, if you want it to. Also, the standby feature makes so that you don't have to turn it on and off - just power it on once and leave it! Plus, the price for a 12' was not bad either.

Weakness:

1. Size
2. Humming when in action or on standby
3. Some distortion

Generally, these subwoofers are not good. It has the bass and all, but you begin to realize some distortions. After about 4months of usage, you begin to hear that humming sound that everyone was talking about! It just hums when it's on standby. Even when there's music, it hums! Recently, it hums and also does something..some weired bassy taps and man, if the music is on quite loud and the music you're playing doesn't have a crazy bass-line, but a rather distinct one, well, you may notice the extra taps in there...it really sucks then. Oh! For those who like to listen to heavy metal, and fast, indiscernible (in my opinion) music, you wont have a problem. It will serve you perfectly!! Moreover, i think it's too honking huge! Oh! and heavy!! Unless i'm forgetting something, that should be all i have to say concerning this product. If you're looking to buy this, i'd say don't, if you are buying one to last.

Strength:

great at low freqs, conections for all types of receivers/amplifiers, auto on/off switch

Weakness:

size (too big), that humming noise heard all times when volume is low, on/off switch located in the back

Even when the sales person said "no need of a subwoofer with JBL's N38" I decided to purchase it. Wise decision. Even at very low volume at my Yamaha RXV-995 the bass is so good, you can almost feel roars and thunders inside the room. Instruction manual is simple and very good. You can conect right away the subwoofer, even if you don't have a top of the line, modern, av receiver. Well, you must have a spacious room, 'cause the stuff is BIG. On/off switch should be located in the front panel. There also should be a way to switch off the subwoofer completely on auto mode. There is a constant noise all times, even when the woofer is not in use :-((.

Strength:

QUALITY - Price - Excellent Sound when auditioned

Weakness:

None

First, let me say that I have been greatly influenced by the reviews written here, knowing that virtually anyone who can type can have his opinion expressed here.

In general, thse pages have helped me to make GREAT final buying decisions. But the ultimate decision, is in a pre-buying listening test. Or should be !

I can tell you this ..... This sub-woofer is a WONDERFUL addition to our home. We use it for our Home Theater System, which is driven by a Sherwood Newcastle R-945 (Another Supremely WONDERFUL sounding piece of equipment !).

My experience is Simply GREAT !~

There have been, in the past 9 months, no problems, whatsoever. Just good sound.

And yes ... this unit was purchased over the Web.

Would I do it again ? In a HEARTBEAT !@

Would I recommend a larger subwoofer ? No, and neither would I recommend a smaller subwoofer.

My bride and I live in a home, and listen fairly LOUD .....
and as so many other accurate reviewers have stated here ...
This Unit ROCKS !

I hope this POSITIVE review helps someone else to enjoy the wonderful low sounds this subwoofer is capable of producing.

A few hints: Watch the crossover point, you set. "Play" with it until you are satisfied (A little lower than you might normally think might actually prove to be the better choice, overall). The same goes for the Level setting - matching it to your preferences and your receiver.

Good Luck to any potential purchasers out there reading this - This unit is a WINNER !

Strength:

Excellent performance (when it works)

Weakness:

Horrible quality control

My experience pretty much echoes most of the reviews on here. I debated with the quality issue and finally decided to take the plunge when I was able to get the sub from Mercata for $170 (using the new user discount) delivered.

The sub worked like a champed for the first three weeks. However, I probably only watched a total of 4 movies and listened to an hour or so of music during that time.

Literally on the last day of Mercata's 30-day satisfaction period, it stopped working. The light would come on indicating it would receive a signal, but it generated absolutely no sound. After hooking my old sub back up, I verified that the receiver was working fine.

I sent an email to Mercata (it was a Sunday) and to their credit they responded within about 15 minutes with an RMA and agreed to take it back at their expense.

If I were you, I'd give it an extensive workout before your return period is over.

Strength:

Availability, Power, Price

Weakness:

Reliability

I've had the sub now for just about two months. I did a prior review in June. As was the case then, the sub sounded great, however it blew out recently.

I was watching Lethal Weapon 4, with the sub at about 55-60% power and my receiver around the usual 30%. Near the end of the movie, I heard a rattling, buzzing sound from the woofer. It sounded like a loose wire, but it definitely was telling me that it was down for the count.

I returned it to Best Buy and hopefully within the next month I'll get it back repaired and it'll be good from then on. If not...oh well! That is what a replacement plan is for apparently.

Strength:

Good hardhitting bass!!! nothing like playing half-life with a kickass sub.

Weakness:

none yet. except the fact that i had to pay $30 for a cable but thats not JBLS fault.

I got this sub at best buy, its the PB12 istead of the explosion prone PSW-112 and I love it!!! its a great match for my JBL S310's and Yamaha NS-A635 surounds, and since its hooked to a computer, its used to play games and MP3's.
its hooked to a Aiwa AV-D55 through the LFE link, and is very tight and a lot more powerful than the yamaha i thought about purchasing

Strength:

When it works its awesome specially for home theather

Weakness:

Price, Dead on Arrival

Bougth it last April, as soon as I plugged it in a hummmmmm, then suddenly hum is gone, power indicator extinguised, in short Its DEAD. Took it to authorize repair shop. They told me after a week the power module is faulty. They told me it should take a couple week to get the part. Three months later, finally got it back and now it on my system being tested. The JBL support for part is basically non-existence, it took me several e-mail and phone calls to acquired the part ( a lot of headache) And now in the process of getting another sub, coz don't know when this sub will quit on me. This sub when its working will do just fine for a Home Theather but for music it's boomy. The reason I'm not going to recommend this is because of the quality.
