Strength:

Good bass. Many inputs.

Weakness:

Amp blew.

After using this sub for 2 months the amp blew. I bought it at Best Buy, not online, and I did not crank it up to see how loud it would play. Yet I came home one day and when I tried to turn it on there was nothing. This sub sounds good, but don't buy something that won't work.
P.S. I sent an e-mail to JBL and haven't gotten a response over a week later.

Strength:

decent sound when it worked (less than 2 days)

Weakness:

died within 2 days

I purchased this from Mercata for $160 after Mercata 20% credit. Received less than a month ago but waited to hook it up until I got the Denon 3300 I ordered...used it for the last two days watching DVD movies when it popped and died. Unfortunately I did not read the reviews until after I purchased it. I in the process of requesting that Mercata refund my money. After reading the reviews on this POS, doesn't seem like getting it fixed/replaced is the best idea. If Mercata doesn't refund my money...I guess I spent $160 to find out I'll never purchase a JBL peice ever again.

Strength:

Home theater sound effects will WAKE the dead!
Very heavy, Built solid. Consider having a Hernia!

Weakness:

Just does not sound as Clean as Good 2 way speaker bass.

Using the Avia Home Theater disk made the sub woofer sound much better. It is very easy to miss adjust it and have it sound boomy.
I purchased mine from Mercata for 170.00. I read a lot of good and bad info on the amplifier. I noticed that they have changed the amp panel on the sub, it no longer has a "Direct Input". Now you must use a y cable and feed L-R preamp inputs.

Could this be a improvment in the amplifier design?

For the price it is a excellent Home Theater subwoofer. There is nothing even close in value and performance.
I hope it stays working.
If anyone knows if the amp in the sub has been changed please let me know?

Strength:

Strong bass...just as advertised.

Weakness:

Blew the amp after three months. Non-repairable. Waiting on replacement as I type.

This is a real love/hate relationship. I loved the sub when it worked. I hated it when it blew up after three months of light usage. It just went fzzzzt and quit.

Local service center was unable to repair or replace the failed part.

Haven't decided what to get if the replacement fails. Probably bite the bullet and go Velodyne.

Strength:

Deep Powerful Bass

Weakness:

Not reliable at all

I purchased this product last year at Christmas time through Mercata. Best Buy was selling the product for about $100 dollars more than I paid for it on-line. When the Sub worked it was awesome. Deep, window rattling bass that would piss my girlfriend off and scare the dogs. It worked great for 5 months and then one night I heard some "popping" noises coming from the speaker as it was on "stand-by". I called into JBL who directed me to the authorized service center. The service reps had the unit for 6 weeks when they told me that parts would not be available until August (it was the last week of June at the time). They ordered a new unit for me and as soon as took the new unit home and plugged it in the popping began again. It didn't even make it to the first DVD test. I took the new unit back and the JBL authorized service reps told me that this particular product has had a lot of problems and they would not recommed the product to anybody. Since the product is under warranty, I am currently in the process of getting my money back. I have a friend who works at Circuit City who has stopped selling the unit because of the number of returns that were hurting his commissions. I am now looking at some Polk Sub woofers that will go with my Polk fronts, center, and rears. Bottom line, if the speaker worked it would be awesome, but it doesn't so it's junk. STAY AWAY from this one!!!

Received sub (Mail Order) with high hopes after listening to it in local stores. Unfortunately I did not spend the time doing some background work on the quality of this product.
Being an electronic tech I have had some experience with Jbl
and it has been fairly good.
The sub blew the 2amp fuse immediately after firing it up.
I then did some research and found that this is a reocurring problem with this sub.
I would also like to say that I purchased it on the net through Wholesale Products in Mass. After badgering them for four weeks I finally got a return authorization. When I recieved the product the box had been opened and resealed. It looked like it had fell off of the ups trailer. Every piece of styrofoam was broke inside the box.I finally got them to admit that it was a return and not new. They don't answer the phone, fax or e-mail. I finally threaten to turn them in to the credit card company and better business.
Buyer beware.
I finally settled on a Klipsch Ksw-12. An absolutley great product. Great deal fron Vanns.com. These people are first class and biz.com rated five star.

Strength:

Sounds great when it works - great boom, makes your room shake

Weakness:

Amp died in less than 3 months usage

I am an expatriot living in Taiwan. I recently got myself what I thought to be a pretty nice home theatre gig from JBL distributor here - with SVA 2100, center, and 1500 as my front main, center and surround speakers, and of course, what I thought to be a must- JBL subwoofers and not one but two PSW D112's. to make sure that I get a balanced booming effect in my room. I have been a very big fan of JBL, up until tonight.....

20 minutes into watching Gladiator tonight, one of my two subwoofers died. I have only used them a few times in less than three months since purchase, with settings never more than half way.

At first I thought I had done something worong, but then I checked Audioreview to find whether there might be other suckers who might have suffered the same fate. To my shock, the reviews were full of pissed off customers who realized that that this model was a complete piece of crap.

I cannot believe that JBL would sell such a substandard product. I also checked out Infinity subs in Audioreview and found out they also had the same problem. (JBL and Infinity are both made by Harmon International).

I have lost faith in JBL tonight. The thing I hope for now is that this crap is still covered by warranty. I cannot believe it. This will be the first time I have to resort to using warranty, as I always buy name brand products and they have always stood up to quality.

I have two words of advice to potential buyers -- DON'T BUY!!! Save yourself the trouble and look at other brands, as I surely will. I am just now waiting for my other JBL sub to drop dead, and hopefully before the warranty expires.......

Strength:

Great for watching "Saving Private Ryan" and other good mivies with bass. Sounds Great!

Weakness:

Went dead after 4 months!! What a piece of C**P when a product doesn't work so soon after buying it!...Heavy also.

Went "Ka-Poot" after 3 1/2 months. After turning it on and off after all these months,it started Popping after turning it on. Then one day..(POP!) and a red light came on and slowly went out..(DEAD!)....After taking it back after warrentee, got it fixed, and was told to just "Leave it on,unless you go on a vacation THEN turn it off"...I guess turning it on/off destroys this unit...I was dissapointed with the salesmans pitch on how good it was...I'm going to say something to this guy about this "Product". It works now so we'll see how long it lasts after being "Fixed"..

Strength:

Power, Connections, Price

Weakness:

Size; but it's the price one must pay

Wow... this thing is STRONG! It's shaking my humble abode to pieces... Have to keep it kinda low or the dog starts rubbing his head with his paws and running for the doggie door. Quite a sight I assure you. The bass reproduction is clean, powerful, and all you could ask for in a $298 sub Onecall.com again delivered all they promised and more. Those folks run a top rate outfit IMHO. They also sold me a 6 meter "liberty" sub kit complete with cable and Y for only $30. It looks and feels identical to the $50 plus "monster cable" at local retailers, so if you need this don't hesitate to go with the "off" brand.

On a side note, I measured under an end table and thought the sub dimensions listed on JBL's site would allow it to just fit. What they didn't tell me was the front grill extends past the 19 1/2" depth making the actual depth of the cabinet 21" (yeah, it was going to be a tight fit). Removing the grill doesn't help cause the top right corner is the volume and indicator lights and that remains when the grill is removed. The connects on the rear add another 1 1/2 to 2" (allowing room for the cable) to the depth so don't forget to add for those in your measuring for a tight fit. I managed to find another spot for this behemoth and am as I type being thumped into audio bliss. If you've got the space and want a top quality sub for a reasonable price, this one's for you.
