Strength:

Sound.

Bought from J&R for $299. It is a great deal for a subwoofer of this caliber. The same unit at Best Buy or Circuit City is over $500.

I added this unit to round out my DVD watching experience. I have a Sony STRDB930 receiver,Infinty RS5 front speakers, Infinity Quadrople surround speakers, and a Wharfdale center channel.

The bass reproduction is great and I have been fortunate to not have had any problems listed by others. I have to change the low crossover setting to around 150 for watching movies and to around 80 for music. Room location makes a big difference and the only way to tell is to try it in various locations.

So far, my favorite movies for bass are: Top Gun, The Saint, James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies or Golden Eye, 2001 or 2010, Star Trek Insurrection or First Contact.

Can't go wrong with this sub.

Strength:

Sounds great.

Weakness:

Dies.

I bought one of these from 800.com a few weeks ago. When I got it, set it up, and started using it, I immediately had problems with it cutting out. Knocking on the top of it would restore the sound, but it would just go out again after a while. Then I found that turning it on its left side would keep it from cutting out, and I left it that way for about a week. Then I righted it again and it wouldn't cut out anymore, but it started sounding like it was blown. I never played it very loud so that shouldn't have been a problem. I called 800.com and got that one exchanged for another. The second one arrived a few days ago, and it was working great until this morning. I turned it on, it made a quiet popping noise, and then it went off. Now it will not turn on again. I was pleased with the sound when it was working, but I'm not sure if I'll try yet another one of these now.

Bought this speaker about four months ago from www.consumer-direct.com for $300. (just checked - they are still selling it for $300). My first impression was good. Good bass - you can really feel it, no vibration, and construction was good - sturdy unit. Two or three days later, tried to use it - the power light was not on and the speaker wouldn't function. Sent it back, no questions asked by consumer-direct. Got a replacement unit. It turned on OK, but the sound was awful! Lots of vibration, the speaker was shot. Speaker has crossover control and a volume control, but no adjustments could make this speaker emit clean sound. Sent this one back, but I did have to coax consumer-direct a bit on this.
Got my third sub from consumer-direct and this one works. Good bass, powerful, I am very pleased with this unit. However, after experiencing two bum units, I cannot give this model a perfect or very good score. On the plus side, it is a solidly constructed unit, and the front grill is attractive.

Just got this sub last week - completely amazing how it covers the entire range. Beautiful setup & sound. Can't be beat for the price - purchased at the local ABC warehouse for around $250. shop4.com also has good pricing.
To the gentleman who was hearing "slap slap" of the woofer - try placing your speaker in the corner on a 45' angle, w/ the front facing outwards. Absolutely superb lows from anywhere in the room. You *will* get a terrible sound from any brand / any size sub if it has improper placement.

Receiver: H/K AVR 65
Fronts: JBL HLS 610s
Rears: JBL CM52s
Center: JBL Center

Strength:

D.O.A.

Weakness:

EVEN THE REFURB WAS D.O.A. !!!

I wanted a subwoofer to abuse for HT as my Velodyne has been pushed to it's limits for that. I figured that for $179.00 bucks for a RENEWED (FIXED) JBL D112 from VANNS.COM what would I have to loose? SHIPPING BOTH WAYS THAT'S WHAT! Not only was it D.O.A. but according to VANNS.COM that's not their fault or problem. It cost me more then $50.00 for shipping in both directions thanks to VANNS.com AND JBL!!!

I have dealt with JANDR.COM, UNCLESTEREO.COM and ONECALL.COM and NEVER have I ran into a company like VANNS! They are as bad as this subwoofer. I had 2 bad LF 10 subwoofers delivered from WWW.Unclestereo.com and they paid shipping both ways for both those units. The 2nd of the Klipsch units failed several months after getting it and Uncle's still paid for return shipping and gave me a choice of a FULL refund "INCLUDING SHIPPING" or full credit towards something else. That's when I dished out the extra cash for my Velodyne HGS 12...

VANNS.COM actually suggested it was my fault for buying this sub online! They said that between JBL and UPS that I would be better off buying LOCAL. THEY DIDN'T SING THIS WHEN TAKING MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER IN THE FIRST PLACE! I guess it's like they said, IT's not their problem or fault that it arrived D.O.A.!!!

Now as for JBL's customer service. I talked to a couple of people regarding this sub woofers failure and every one of them was RUDE and DEFENSIVE to say the least. I was so mad at one of the guys for speaking to me in the mannor he was speaking that I hung up on him. Can you believe that he actually called me back to argue about this subwoofer. No matter what they had to say their product spoke the truth... Not listening to these reviews cost me over $50 bucks, a bunch of time and a heck of a hassle. My credit for the money spent on this piece of junk is still pending.

Strength:

none at all, it is good at sounding ok in store to help Best Buy catch innocent buyers

Weakness:

Amp will die. Too much death with these. What really bothers me is how people continuously buy one.

I haven't even used this sub. I know what it is like. It is JBL crap and doesn't hold a change to a true subwoofer. Why do people come here and actually go buy it still? Why is anyone buying from Best Buy in the first place?

I thought I'd just come here to help lower the rating. Might as well it is on a streak.

0 stars for value cause it won't work and is not worth 15 dollars.

0 stars for overall cause it won't work.

Strength:

Good bass, lots of hook-up flexibility

Weakness:

Manual could be better, and do I have an amp problem?

Yes, it is huge, as everyone is quick to point out. Get over it. After all, to house a 12" cone, the box has to be bigger than 12". I got a GREAT price on a refurbished unit from Vanns, and I knew what I was getting into, but figured for $129, if it died, it was not such a horrible loss. So far, it has only been turned on/off 10 times, and has been on/standby for the last 3 months straight. That is because it tended to make a horrible turn on pop, so now I leave it on all the time. It still pumps out bass every time I turn on my stereo, which is 2 times a day, for hours at a time. I have it hooked up from the subwoofer output of my Onkyo TXSV-939 reciever, and I have been pretty happy with the sound and performance. However, sometimes it seems to be putting out bass even though the LED does not turn from red to green. I don't have any hums from it, and suspect that the people that do have a constant hum have a ground loop in their system. It can be fairly easy to check for a ground loop in a simple system, or quite complex with several components, and there are lots of websites that will help you troubleshoot this. I knew it had problems, but so far I haven't had any. I have always been happy with JBL Pro gear, and even if this bites the dust, I might give them another try, but will probably get a Velodyne

Strength:

Great Sound

Weakness:

D.O.A. got fixed died 7 months later

I got this one reconditioned for a great price, but it didn't work when I got it. Luckily there is a service outlet in town so it was easy to get fixed. It worked great for about 7 months then it died again so I took it back to get fixed. They have had it in the shop for 3 months now and they are just waiting for the part. They are replacing the whole amp board with a new one that JBL says fixes the problem with these subs. I guess I will find out if I ever get it back. The only reason to buy this sub is if you get it real cheap and have a service outlet near by just incase it blows.

Strength:

Beautiful clean sound that fits all styles of music

Weakness:

Breakdown rate

I have been a long time JBL supporter. This is my way of ending that relationship. My PB12 sub started cracking and popping out of no where while in standby mode. It was a year and 8 days old. JBL would not even answer my polite emails even though the track record here is clearly that the amp section of this sub has its problems. I am repairing it myself and moving on. Don't buy JBL. This is a company living on its past reputation. If they continue to treat serious customers this way they won't last.
