Strength:

harmon support online after warranty had expired

Weakness:

quality of electronics

Update on my post below. My sub died 2 months out of warranty so I emailed JBL online support. No response for a few days so I get out the o/scope and troubleshoot. On the main amplifier PCB, capacitor C11 is shorted out and completely melted. At radio shack I get a mono-ceramic axial 330nF/100V cap, solder it into place and the sub is good as new. Just after I get the sub working again JBL support guy "James Pagano" sends me an email offering to cover the unit under warranty although my official warranty has expired. James is a great guy and I have to admit JBL (Harmon) did more than they had to when they offered to help. OK the sub has problems but if everybody at JBL support was like James we wouldn't need to harp on about a poor product. I would encourage everybody else with a sub out of warranty to contact JBL support via email or have a look inside and see if capacitor C11 is the usual suspect.

Strength:

Pretty good bass

Weakness:

Horrible amp quality

I have had the same amp problems. This sub is pure crap and I am purchasing a new sub today (never JBL again).

After 9 months, my amp failed and kept blowing fuses immediately after power up. I went through the horrendous hassle of getting the sub repaired under warranty. I have now used it maybe 15 hours after the repair over the course of about 6 months (didn't use it while I moved into a new house) and it blew up last night. It was not being used at all when the fuse blew. Now it keeps blowing fuses again just like before, except now it is not under warranty. This sub is pure crap. I just went and bought a Cerwin Vega RL-28w sub and will see how that works. I wouldn't recommend this sub to anyone. By the way, my friend bought this same JBL sub when I did and his now makes horrible popping noises and sporatically stops working.

Just an update from a year ago (see my review below). The subwoofer continues to work flawlessly and I've now had it for about 14 months. If it blows out tonight, I figure I've now gotten my money's worth by now. My friend who bought the PSWD-112 from mercata.com (now defunct) at the same time I did and had his blow within two months had it repaired under JBL warranty and it's now worked for just over a year with no problems.

It's been a five-star speaker for me, but *Go figure*

VANNS.COM HAS REFUNDED THE COST OF SHIPPING. I must say that they have always been very polite and helpful but I thought they owed for shipping and at first they didn't feel that way. I am very pleased that they reimbursed me for shipping one way and I think it's only fair that I pay the other way.

I just bought a Paradigm PW2200 and it's better "TO ME" then my Velodyne HGS 12! I think the Paradigm is faster, has better detail and is more authoritive. It also has the same continuous output as the HGS 15 above 20 HZ and hits peaks of 112.8 DB! All this from a local dealer at only $599

Strength:

tight bass, forward firing keeps neighbors below happy, hi-pass outputs for satellites

Weakness:

none...YET, but all you people can't be wrong...can you?

I bought mine as a refurb from vanns @10 months ago. Knock on a BIG-ASS piece of wood they have survived a cross country move and a large amount of use in that time. Maybe they fixed what the inherant flaw was in the refurbs-hellifikno, but mine sounds tight, punchy, and can run 5 discs and a DVD through it a day with no signs of strain. The reviewer who suggested the 90hz x-over point is accurate- it really isn't 90hz. nice touch having a separate hi-pass point-you can increase the rolloff by slight gapping of the lo/hi points. The front panel control is ok and i never use the video enhancer (too boomy).

My signals pass through a CX-1000 Yamaha pre into a DBX-3bx (don't actually turn it on much anymore)then into the sub, where it sends RCA back to a Yamaha M-85 that drives Paradigm Titans. I'm looking forward to moving the Titans to the rear, getting a v2 set for the fronts (or higher in their line), a matching center speaker, and using the Yamaha DSP-ES492 processor/3-ch amp combo I just scarfed on Ebay for $66. I'm also on the lookout for a DD/DTS processor (i'm guessing the Technics)since I'm unaware of any cheaper units that do both DD/DTS as well.

Overall I have to give the sub an excellent rating-the refurb was in overall VGC, tho the box wasn't. I really appreciate this forum for warning me of the problems others have had with theirs, and I wish others the luck I've had with mine (so far)

I bought this sub at netmarket.com for $200 thinking it was a good deal. Ive had it now for a year and have used it every day without any of the problems the others are talking about. It has a monster sound and rocks my house. However, looking at all the negative reviews, JBL obviously screwed this sub up somewhere. It is probably just a fluke that my sub works...or at least for now.

I listened to several subs before I decided on the JBL PSW-D112. I certainly feel that after a month with this baby, I made the RIGHT choice. I had upgraded to a Yamaha Dolby Digital receiver, added JBL center and rears so JBL kinda had the heads up anyway. My mains are the JBL L100's (22 years old) that are really, really great so I wanted to make sure I enhanced everything with the addition of a sub. I have been running big amps and subs in my vehicle for years so I knew the type of bass I wanted. The PSW-D112 is the only one below 500 bucks that beat my car sub. It has the depth, punch, and low end that I wanted and literally shakes the house. Placement is always important and Phasing must be adjusted with any sub and this one was no trouble at all to set up. I listen to a lot of DVD music videos which really pound, and movies are really powerful. Several of my friends have subs like mirage, klh etc but they don't sound like this. Wholesaleproducts.com had the price and I had the place.

I have had the D112 for a few days now and I am starting to like it a little more. When I first got it, I thaught "Man, did I get ripped off!". I was hoping for bass I could feel rather than hear, but all I heard was the "splat" of the speaker... After a day of tuning, moving, retuning, moving and a day of listening I am starting to like it.
I have an Infinity 8" 50Watt sub and I was thinking "50% increase in speaker radius + 5X power increase = HUGE leap in performance", but that is not completely true. While the JBL can go fairly low and has a good deal of power, it lacks the "warmth" my Inifinity has and sounds, somehow, cheaper... Maybe it is a lack of precision, or maybe I have more tuning to perform, but the 112 seems to be a bit weak, a little boomy and not low enough.

Now, when I sit on my couch while playing something with really low bass the couch really shakes, which improves the theater experience immensely, but it just seems to miss the mark somewhere. Maybe there is an audiophile out there that can better pinpoint my dissatisfaction.

Overall I give them 3 stars.

Colin

Knowing that I was missing a good sub for my overall home theater experience, I latched on to the JBL PSW-D112. My impressions? Great woofer for the price. Feels sturdy right out of the box. Has all of the features I was looking for and sounded the best out of everything in its price range. I have a Sony STR-915 and Sony 300 DVD player, JBL rears, Bose fronts and an Infinity CC2 center. I tested the woofer on a wide range of DVDs (Enemy of the State, Rugrats: The Movie, Apollo 13, True Lies) and was very impressed with the sound and feeling this speaker kicked out. I paid $399 locally, and I am sure you can find better prices out there. This one is worth looking into.
