Strength:

Good low frequency when subwoofer worked

Weakness:

Broke after a couple listenings

Well, I gave this website a look before I purchased the KLH subwoofwer model ASW10120B and found the complaints to be true. I was hoping as others that model " B " fixed the problem(s). However, not the case. I purchased the unit on 12/22/00 and proceeded to use it. A gentle break-in of the sub (noting past problem(s)) was implemented. Three days later (Xmas day), I tried the sub and NO sound was heard.
There was no " fried " smell or any advance notice of a problem. Without delay, the next day 12/26/00,I returned the sub and replaced it with the highly recommended Sony SAWM40 model. So far,not a problem or sound murkiness, etc.
I have used KLH products for years but the first time that I encountered a problem. Oh well, now you know.

Strength:

After hearing this sub I am trying to figure out how much more bass a room 10x15 needs?

Weakness:

I wish I read the reviews on this because I figured from Costco for $100 this might be worthwhile. After watching the Matrix, Mission Impossible 2, Haunting from the DTS sampler DVD and Independence Day the thing broke. I purchased 12/26/00 and it died 12/28/00 after 4 hours of use.

If this thing didnt die I was going to not buy my own parts and build a sub or buy a more expensive one. But since this doesnt work and other reviews seem to make this a common problem, please do not buy this product.

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

boomy bass

I got this KLH B series sub at Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving. Today is January 15 and it's still working. For 100 bucks this thing has satisfied me very well. It's not the best but it's cheap. Fortunately it is still working so maybe I'll try making those modifications to make the bass tighter. I just don't understand why so many other subs are dying on them. I just hope mine doesn't die on me.

Weakness:

Amp burned up.

Had speaker for 6 months and it died. Took a look inside the amp and could see where the resistors had fried. The board was all charred. Called KLH and they said to send just the amp in. After a couple weeks I received a brand new replacement amp. We'll see how long this one lasts. Level is barely over one-third.

some of you people are complete really "out there"... what do you freakin expect for a 50.00 - 100.00 POWERED ten inch sub??? should it make ya coffee in the am too???
my god...

anyway bought one, works great 120watt built in amp .... nice controls... nothing special....

I did some mods as well.... all the mods done a tips and tricks I've used in multiple subwoofer applications in cars.
ok... boys and girls... we are looking a a fairly thin 1/2" think MDF enclosure at about 1.0 - 1.2 cubic ft.... so I added some dynamat that I had lying around to the inner walls. then I went by the notion of 1 pound of polyfil (crafts stores got this as well as walmart) per cubic ft.
Lemme tell ya... doing this lil' labor with about an additional 20 bucks in materials makes this sub tighten up, hit lower, and have much more control.
and remember as with all subs.... PLACEMENT is of utmost importance... don't put this is the middle of the room under the coffee table and expect to be BLOWN AWAY. Subs need to be as close to the corners of your listening area as possible to really produce the desired results.... but hey.. ya'll are smart cookies and prolly knew that already.

For those out there that can appreciate a - 100.00 sub... I commend you... for those that think it should perform like a +2000.00 sunfire.... get a life.

oh.. and for those that had the fried amp models..... thems the breaks.
replace it with the 120....

Strength:

Explosive Bass, Cheap Price!

Weakness:

Around 9 or 10 it distorts alittle, ( that's really normal though, you can't expect it to go that loud and not distort.) Manual has no tweaking tips or explanation of terms.

I bought this Sub at Fry's electronics about a week ago. This being my first sub, I didn't really know that much about it when I opened the box. I had to learn about Crossover frequency, and I still don't know what the difference is between "Rev" and "Norm" is on the thing. I have a Panasonic Mini System, but that is almost unfair to call it "mini" It has explosive sound and was "Dolby Digital Ready" so I bought a DVD player with a built in decoder. I had a complete home theater in my bedroom and the left and right speakers have built in 7-inch subs but I wanted a seperate sub to put the ".1" in the "5.1" I looked around and subs can be pretty pricey. Around $300-500 for a decent entry level sub. When I saw the price on this baby I figured I HAD to give it a try. I took it home and set it up and stupidly I wasn't thinking and didn't really give it a proper break in. I slammed in the matrix and went to where the helicopter crashes into the building. WOW. I have glass paneled closet doors and they SHAKE! I realize that when you buy a cheaper sub you don't get really clear seperation of sound with punches and kicks, but it's not to bad, it's actually pretty good at making distinct noises and not just insane never ending rumbles. Overall I am on a cheap budjet and I really like it!! Here are some things I would recommend:

I put the volume at 8 out of 10( anymore and it will distort.)

I set the crossover frequency at about 110-115 for movies and about 160 for music.

I took out the woofer and lined the walls with insulation. I did this because I read that it helped other people who owned this sub. I don't notice better sound now, but I can turn it alittle louder now without distortion.

I heard that putting the sub on a hard floor rather that carpet helps the bass. I'm not sure, but I will try it.

LOTS of people have said that there sub has fried or broke right away, but I didn't exactly break mine in gently and I have not had any trouble yet.

Well, that's about it, but I REALLY recommend this sub all the way. By the way this review was on the 120-watt model not the 110-watt model.

Stop reading and go BUY THIS THING!!!!!!!!!

$63

Weakness:

$63 uh, it was $63. weakness? I don't think so.

Ok kids, the guy below took an hour to write you a comarison of an expensive Yamaha HT receiver and TWO DCM speakers with 12" woofers in each.

He compares the bass output and quality of bass to ONE 10" sub with a 120W amp that was $60-$80.

How's that for a fair comparison.

Hmmm maybe next we can compare the cheapest sub on the planet (the KLH 120) to some $7000 Definitive Technology BPL5000's with 2200 watts of power in each tower. Wonder how the little sub would compare then?

That would be really fair. ;|

Geeeeez.

Good price

Weakness:

Needs a lot of modifications

Well, like many people, I first bought the original KLH ASW 10-120. I had many problems with it; dying amplifier, distorting speaker at normal volumes, and rattling bass port. I returned it to Costco and decided to give the ASW 10-120B a chance. KLH made a few improvements like a better amplifier and reinforced bass port. The speaker looked different (The middle of it was just flat, not a cone), but it still distorted at normal listening volumes. So, I decided to take off the grill and unscrew the speaker. First, I noticed the lack of insulation inside the enclosure. I added some more insulation around the sides of the box. The bass become tighter, but I still couldn't crank the sub without distortion. So, I decided to go all out and replace the woofer itself. I bought a 10 inch Rockford Fosgate Punch HX2. Its rated at 120-400 watts RMS (1000 peak). Its a dual 4 ohm voice coil so I connected the wires in serious to adapt to the KLH's 8 ohm amplifier. When I put this baby in, it sounded excellent! I can practically turn the volume up on the subwoofer and the receiver to ear rattling volumes, and I can still enjoy distortion free sound from the speaker itself. If you buy this sub, you might want to make some modifications in order to create the best sound. Its a good price though.
