After much research at this web site and in the sound rooms, I finally broke out the visa card and purchased a sub. My criteria was stay below $500. I compared JBL, Velodyne, Klipsch and M&K 12" subs. in this price range. For me it came down to two models, the V-75 and the Klipsch KSW-12. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Without argument, the Klipsch packs a lot of bang for the buck, but side by side the V-75 was the winner. Also the V-75 uses a sealed enclosure which, typically, produces lower hz. -vs- a ported enclosure like the Klipsch. I was willing to trade off some SPL for lower extension. My only fear about the V-75 was the capability of the 75W amp to provide enough SPL and ability keep up without distortion. I don't typically crank the volume but with a two story vaulted ceiling there is a lot of volume to fill. My home test criteria was Top Gun and Metallica's "One." The V-75 did a great job, its a keeper. Distribution for the M&K is much more limited than the other products thus not as much market competition to drive the price down. I stayed under the $500 objective, verily, but the Klipsch could have been had for much less. For those of you researching, ABT in Chicago quoted $450 on the M&K and Vanns.com had the best price on the Klipsch around $325.

Strength:

Very smooth, blends well. Can re-arrange internal organs :)

This sub out-classed everything else in its price range that I tried. It blends much better with both movies an music that the other subs I tried out. It also has the helpful feature of having a more child-proof grille than the more expensive M&K subs (flat, flush fabric grille vs. metal, curved grille with more than enough room for a child to insert their arm, barbie, etc.).

Strength:

The bass output is incredible. It rumbles the entire 3 story apartment complex.

Weakness:

Needed to include high-level speaker OUTPUTS!!!!

This has been a long awaited addition to my system. It has performed better than the in store eval, which was phenomenal in its own regard. It handles down to passages that are well within the 15-20hz level with no problem. I havent had the speaker try to bottom out either. One attributing factor to the results I have recieved is in direct corrallation to the type of speaker wire I use. I use Audioquest solid copper core speaker wire and believe me, it brings out the best in any speaker you might try to use. Forget that multistrand Monster Cable type of crap out there, cause this is where it is. I didnt believe it would make that much of a difference, but it did!!! The sub actually sends a low 15-20Hz signal throughout my complex during certain movie and music tracks. This speaker handles my music with no problem( rap, jazz, and pop) Some of my jazz tracks have some really low bass guitar going on and I can tell you that they havent sounded better. For the price coupled with the value, I can say this is your best bet. It took me a while to run across it, but I am truly glad that I did. When I build that dream setup, I will move from my very nice Polks to the ungodly MK THX series of monitor speakers. Even though it is on VHS, try the Episode One scence with the Pod Racers. Check out the beginning part when the Pod Racers start their engines up and listen to the guy run his throttle and tell me then, is this not the best speaker you've heard!!!!!!

Please take my advice and couple any speakers you have with the Audioquest line of speaker wire. From the Type II line to the CV-4, they are absolutely a must to enjoy every bit of sound the engineers have provided for you to hear.

Strength:

Fast, tight, tuneful bass. Goes down to 20 hz as specified. Some bass energy eben below 20 hz.

Weakness:

Maybe not the last word in bass slam, but if more slam is what you want buy a more expensive M&K sub

This is the best sub in the $500 price range, period. This sub is probably a good match for some of the more expensive subs such as Paradigm Pw2200 or Velodyne CT-150.
I haven't used it for movies because it is in my music only system.

NAD C370 integrated
NAD 514 CD player
Paradigm Studio 20 v.2s on matching Premier stands
MSB Link DAC
Kimber Silver Streak interconnects
Pure Silver Sound jumpers
Canare Digiflex Gold 75 ohm digital coax
Kimber 8tc biwire
Target rack
70's Marantz 2226B for tuner section

I didn't want to get a sub initially because with my past experiences subs have always interrupted the purity of the music coming thru my monitors. ie.-bass was too slow, didn't blend with the speakers, wasn't tight or accurate, or the location of bass was too apparent.

This sub blends perfectly with my rather "fast" system. For a 75 watt (class a/b) pushing the MK 12" cone, you'd think it'd be underpowered. This is definitely NOT the case. Listen to pipe organ music. WOW! This sub has ZERO competition in this price range. I thought I was going to have to spend close to $1000 to get bass like this.

For those shopping for $1000+ subs you should check out what MK has to offer. I'd even think of buying two MK v75 mk2s instead of one expensive sub for maximum bass power and efficiency for home theatre.

I have to give this sub 5 all stars across the board. It's an awesome product at a great price.

Strength:

Powerful bass, quality construction

Weakness:

None

I purchased this sub because the two sub's built into my PhaseTech PC500's did not provide enough punch for home theater. What a great move because this box rocks! The tight responsive deep bass that comes from only 75w is astonishing. It sit's in the front left hand corner of my family room but with eyes closed you cannot tell where the bass is originating from. When watching titles such as Saving Private Ryan this sub woofer is nothing short of awesome with effects that pound the air mass in your lungs and rattle the dishes in the kitchen.

Highly recommended!

Strength:

Musical sub. Tight and clean. Low cost-paid $465. Almost same size and cost as Velodyne CT100. Good build quality.

Weakness:

Don't know what the peak power is. Does anyone know?

I was looking for a sub to listen to all kind of music with. I wanted to keep the price below $500. So basically I decided to try out The Velodyne CT-100 and the MK-75 Mk2. These are two different beasts. The Velodyne is clearly designed toward Home Theater, and therefore high SPLs not accuracy. The MK-75 leans more toward music listeners and articulation. The Velodyne provided plenty of low bass, but the midbass wasn't there. What was there wasn't tight or defined. The MK-75 keeps up with my Polk RT55's much better. If you want to listen to music with your sub, forget the Velodyne CT100 and go with MK-75.

My V75 is only young but i'm very impressed so far. While searching for a replacement for for Vx7 i revied a number of slightly cheaper and slightly dearer subs from M&K and other vendors. The intent was to find a sub that was primarily a musical sub but one that had no trouble dealing with movie soundtracks.
The V75 offered most controlled bass sound of all those that i auditioned. A number of slightly dearer subs offered more slam, but this seemed to be at the expense of sound quality and musicality, sounding more like a special effects machine than a sub. The V75 has so far handle all that i've thrown at it, esp. bass heavy movie soundtracks without producing and noticable distortion.

Placement was relatively easy, the front left of my lounge in the corner produces beautiful sound. facing the sub into the corner doesn't seem to offer any advantage and only make my walls rattle!

The V75's solid construction, controlled sound and musicality are what sold me.

No cause for complaint yet...

Strength:

Good output down to 20 Hz; Plays loud; Low price for the level of performance; Good 5 year warranty

Weakness:

Somewhat limited input/output options

Before purchasing this sub I listened to subs in its price range from Paradigm, B&W, Velodyne, NHT, Energy, Mirage, Monitor Audio, Klipsch, and Polk. It wasn't the best performer of the subs I listened to, but was right up there at the top of the pack. My second choice, the Paradigm PW-2200, had similar low end extension, but slightly more output. However, the Paradigm at $750 is significantly more expensive than the M&K which I got for $475. The M&K V-75 Mk II is definitely a leader in the price/performance category.

I am not sure for the cost if this sub can be beat. The M& K V75 MII is responsive to my the quickness in the jazz I love and really is impressive in a theater application. It is a fantastic compliment to my entire Klipsch Reference Series set-up. I use a Dennon AVR 3801 to drive the system.
