Strength:

Quality!! Quality!! all over. Outboard AMP for ease of hookup and placement of sub / amplifier. Excellent instructions. Cable provided for hookup.

Weakness:

None so far.

A subwoofer connoisseur will immediately recognise the quality of this subwoofer. The ability of this sub, which includes the necessary "bells and whistles" to fine tune to BLEND with the main speakers is A+. Impressed with its bass characteristics, as it has IMPROVED my home theater performance. The piano black finish brightens up the surrounding decor as part of the furniture. Well done NHT!!!

The first time I listened to this sub, I was dissapointed. The sub itself was emitting a quite loud screech/hum, which was irritating to say the least. I tried to elimitate all the variables which may have caused it- I plugged the unit directly into the wall bypassing the power conditioner, removed the inputs, and played with crossovers/power levels. Nothing seemd to make a difference, except for unplugging the remote control box. The shop claims the wiring in that particular room has a bad ground loop-- so I moved the sub into another listening room. Same problem. I didn't even listen to it play.
So I started listening to the M&K V-1250THX and MX-105 MK II subs. They are both in the same price class as the SubOne ($800-900 retail). The 1250THX has for a lack of better words, a fake THX re-EQ mode; which did seem to add *somthing* to the sound in movies. Seeing as how this sub is only THX-select certified, I would guess this is marketed for people with cheaper gear, so they can re-EQ the .1 channel with whatever that switch does. But the 1250 sounded like absolute crap with music. The 105 was a bit smoother (due to the dual 12" drivers?), and seemed a better compromise between HT and Audio. THEN I listened to the NHT, just for kicks.

The NHT SubOne stomps all over these particular M&K subs. The sound is smoother, more dynamic, and 500% more musical. While listening to the M&K's, I could nearly draw a line between music and bass (at all crossover points on the 105; the 1250THX does not have a crossover), while the NHT blended perfectly.

This is one hell of a good sounding subwoofer. The Sunfire DESIGNED (not built) amp may be its weak link, though. NHT/Sunfire claims 250 watts, but might as well claim 25,000- cause it's not either. I would guess significantly lower (100-150 range). Sunfire is good at inflating numbers like this.

If the dealer can fix their power problem, or open another unit to test (which they refused to do, loosing a sale I may add), I might change my mind on the amp. Subwoofers from different manufacturers seemed to like the power supply just fine. NHT earns a 4.

I trialed (is this a word?) subs for about three months, but have never before owned one. When I compared the new NHT SubOne to the PSB 2, the NHT blew it away in music performance. Perfect blending, great reproduction, none of the knocking or thumping that the PSB had. Although the PSB was admittedly more effective for movie effects, I thought, well, the movies I like generally have more musical effects in LFE than explosions anyway, plus I'm getting the sub for its ability to enhance my music listening enjoyment, not to get my eardrums kicked in by explosions or stomping feet. I found it for $735, and I am very impressed with it. A great sub that blows away higher-priced subs.

Strength:

excellent sound reproduction; lack of typical "boominess"; ease of integration into existing system

Weakness:

Does not come with spiked feet. No autosensing multiple inputs (but what sub does have it)

This is a wonderful piece of equipment. I first purchased the NHT supersub but it was a terrible match for my existing system. I don't know why, maybe its because I have carpeting and the supersub is a downfiring sub or maybe it is underpowered.

In any case, the SubOne integrated wonderfully with my system. It has extended the musical range of instruments I am able to hear without overtaking my system or projecting a feeling that is a a seperate system in itself.

The control box is great and I purchased an extension cable which when combined with the first cable allows me to locate the sub 40 feet from the rest of my system. Funny thing is, it has integrated so well I don't have to locate any more than five feet from my system.

The sound is powerul, and it is able to keep up with the rest of my system regardless of the musical pace without becoming muddy (unlike my experience with the sub zero). I I have listened to Jazz and Classical music on DVD-AUDIO discs and I am quite pleased with the sound.

The truth is I think you choice in a sub will depend on the rest of your system. I believe that the supersub was a poor match for my system and where a single component is mismatched the results are displeasing. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the supersub is a great component (by the way NHT is releasing a redesigned front-firing supersub in May), but I believe that a balanced system is the key to great music reproduction. Therefore, I say hats off to NHT for the SubOne.

For those that are interested I what I consider to be my balanced system:

Marantz SR-7000 receiver
Hafler 9180 amp (powering the fronts)
Technics DVD-A10 DVD-video/DVD-audio player
Celestion SL6si (fronts)
Celestion A4C (center)
NHT superzero XU (rears)
NHT SubOne (subwoofer)
Bettercable interconnects (player-receiver-amp)
esoteric interconnect (receiver-sub)
Bettercable speaker Cable (to center)
Apature Accusound silver speaker cable (to fronts)
Radioshack speaker cable (to rears)

Just recieved this sub from Crutchfield and so far so good. It has a great finish that matches my Mirage om7s'. This sub seems to be the best i have had for music..the reviews are right-on below! Movies..im impressed! Explosions and effects can be felt with this sub. I have to remind myself that im looking at a 10 incher here..not a 12 or 15! Mine takes about 30 minutes to go into stand-by mode(which i like)as opposed to a Yamaha that every 6 minutes it would go into stand-by(i don't like). All and all i like this sub and am very impressed thus far! For thoughs' that are looking for a all around sub for Music AND Ht...your search ends here!

Strength:

Outboard control box with long DIN cable
Lots of connectivity options
Tight bass with good frequency response
Classy, black gloss finish
Expected NHT build quality (excellent)
Hits hard while also being subtle

Weakness:

Slight boost in dB at lower frequencies
Short (standard length) power cord
Cloth sub covering can be heard shaking at close distances

Disclaimer: in the past, I have only owned 1 subwoofer, which was a Yamaha powered system that incorporated a 2x6.5" woofer design. Acoustics in my room were horrible, and the sub didn't perform as well as I had hoped (huffing and distortion with only moderate push on the sub, etc.). It's been about 2 years since then, and I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a new sub. With that being said, this is going to be a layman's review of the NHT SubOne. Most would probably argue that I don't need a sub this big for a room as small as I'm using it in (a 9'x9' bedroom), but I hope it proves useful to those looking for a sub for a similar situation.

With that being said, I visited a local specialty store recently to audition this unit. I was very pleased at how subtle it was, and how it enhanced the soundfield overall. At times, it felt seamless, even when it was being played with non-NHT speakers. As I've said in other reviews, my bedroom setup is decent, but far from extraordinary, where I'm using a Denon AVR-3801 receiver with Infinity middle-of-the-road CC3 (center), RS5 (front L/R) and QPS1 (rear L/R surround) speakers. As you can imagine, there isn't a whole lot of quality low-frequency reproduction with just these 5 speakers, especially at low volumes.

After purchasing the SubOne and hooking it up, I took a listen. I had to move the unit around my room several times to figure out where it would produce the best sound from my usual listening point. I ended up having to put it on top of my A/V rack (in between my TV and front-right speaker), so it looks like the monolith from 2001! :) While it's kind of an eyesore, it matches up height-wise with my TV and center channel. I would've preferred it be on my floor, but my room is carpeted, and the only location was off to the side where it was causing pain in one of my ears. Plus, I was afraid that the carpet (which is pretty thick) would absorb a lot of the bass coming from the sub/port.

With the sub at ear level firing almost right at me, it took on an encompassing sound that took me by surprise (in a good way). After measuring all sound levels with an analog sound meter from Radio Shack first, I went ahead and tried it out with a few movies, the first of which was Fantasia 2000 running in DD 5.1 mode. I skipped ahead to Firebird Suite. Those familiar with this segment will fondly recollect when they jumped out of their seat when the firebird's eyes first open. When I had this playing in my room at a fairly generous volume, the bass notes the plays right at that moment nearly sent me flying right through my back wall. The bass literally surged through my chest and shook the hairs on my neck. It was quite a thrill, actually!

Next, I took a look at Toy Story 2. Wow, the opening scene took on a whole new dimension. Laser beams and explosions seemed to jump out at me, and the interior hum of power generators when Buzz is about to battle with Zurg (in the video game) enveloped my ears. Not to mention the part where the huge "Toy Story 2" logo comes flying in from the foreground. A glass of water I had sitting on my nightstand was dancing right along! All the while, the sub never drew attention directly to itself, and it kept up with aplomb.

I have a few "bass test/SPL showoff" CDs that I plan on testing with this sub, but I haven't had a chance to as of yet. However, I am completely satisfied with the sub's performance so far, and as I said above, even though my room is small and I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, this particular sub compliments my movies, music, and games wonderfully, and it's by far one of the best investments I've made to my current setup. Highly recommended!

Strength:

I like the controller box makes it easy to tweak. Very low bass love the sound so far bretty loud for a 10" fits just right for my system.

Weakness:

The port makes a whisling sound when over powered.

I love the sub: I like the way it looks (very shiney like a mirror)and the way it sounds. Even my wife likes the controller box becouse she doesn't like alot of bass.

The bass is very low and blinds very well with my system.
The front two speakers are NHT superOne's

I had to try all of the different ways(4) to hook it up
to get it to sounding like it does now.
I had to cross over the front L&R speakers @ 110Hz to get the sound that i wanted. It seems that there was to much disortion when the fronts where set at full range mode.

I am happy with my sub and wouldn't trade it.

Strength:

Seemless blend with my other NHT speakers, remote control box, strong accurate bass

Weakness:

A little boost (+ 4 db) at around 40 hz

I love my Sub One for it's tight, accurate and ample bass. It is part of an all NHT 6.1 array in a 18 x 20 room.

I connected the Sub One to my receiver LFE output which is low pass set to 80 Hz, the mains were set to "small" and are on a high pass of 80 hz. I located the sub on the front wall just below the right main. I used the Aria disk and a Radio Shack SPL meter to aid in set up. I set the EQ on the controller to flat and the volume knob to half, I measured reference level (75 db) all the way to 25 Hz just like the specs show. I did get a little bump (+4 db) between 40 hz and 35 hz which could be caused by room acoustics. I tweaked for a day or two using the SPL and test disk, and I can really appreciate the remote control box which really helped in the set up. My Onkyo TX-DS787 has a bass limiting feature, as part of the THX standard, that I played with. I never found a need to employ it at my listening levels. Even on the most demanding movie sound tracks I could detect no signs of sub woofer distress.

I played it loudly (with EQ set to contour) on Titan A.E. DTS 5.1 , Gladiator DTS-ES 6.1 , The Haunting DD 5.1, and it performed fantastically. It vibrated my windows and wall hangings. I can see no need for more LFE than this sub produces.

Music is even more impressive. I played all my favorites from Classical to Rock and Roll. In Stereo this sub blends perfectly into the sound stage created by my NHT Super One main speakers.

If you love music, this is your sub. If you have a good HT and you are looking for tight accurate LFE then this sub is well worth your attention.

I just wanted to add this comment to my previous review of this excellent subwoofer. About 2 weeks ago I upgraded my speakers to Coincident Speaker Technology Triumph Signatures and when I hooked everything up again my SubOne had developed a hum. This hum was an electrical buzz that bled through to the speakers as well. I contacted my dealer (Audio Excellence) and they contacted NHT. Within 2 days they had sent me a new cable to try. The new cable did not solve the problem and when I called Audio Excellence they told me that NHT had sent them a new controller box for me to try in case the cable didn't work! So I went and picked it up. Alas, the hum was still there. I called Audio Excellence and they called NHT to arrange for a repair. I boxed up the SubOne and had UPS come and pick it up to take it back to the Benecia, CA offices, fully expecting to be without a sub for a few weeks. Well, that same day Audio Excellence called me a told me that NHT had sent them a brand new SubOne for me and that I could come and pick it up! NHT didn't even know if I had sent in the old sub or not!

Whoa!!!! So, about 8 days after developing the problem I had a brand new SubOne that works perfectly! This is some seriously excellent customer service and I just wanted to give them 5 stars for that!
