Strength:

Plenty of bass for medium to small rooms, finish of cabinet. Believe it is better than the velodyne 10" subs it listened to

Weakness:

Cannot turn off standby mode. Could not get to work with directly connected to my reciever, had to use external amp that came with the sub

I purchased this sub without being able to listen to it first. After getting it home I tested it with Jurasic Park III it rattled my living room windows plenty. It made the dinosaurs seem as though they were in my house, I even had to turn it down for some movies. I tested it with the begining of Evolution while the amp was turned half way up, it tested at 97db. With out having to adjust the sub does not over power the front speakers while listening to music.

Strength:

Build quality, seperate subwoofer amp

Weakness:

subwoofer amp not built in (can be space consuming).

My realtor gave me this sub for the referrals I gave him. My top priority was a sub that was musicial, i.e fast tight bass and not boomy. I needed a sub to blend with my Totem's floorstanders and can say this sub is quite seemless. It true, the sub is does not give bone crushing bass in movies, but nevertheless adequate. I had a 12" Energy sub (good for movies, but too slow for music) and a 8" Energy sub, fast tight bass (but not deep enough). So I can say the NHT satisfied my needs.

Strength:

The external amp is a nice feature, especially for those of us with small children. Place the amp on your stack to keep little fingers from "playing with the toys".

Weakness:

zero

All the "bottom" you will ever really need.

There's a lot of great gear out there and there's a point when the money spent does not justify the increase in performance.

This sub really delivers at a price point that's easy to live with.

Strength:

Controlled bass, superb with music

Weakness:

Could play a little deeper and louder

Most users will find satisfaction with this sub. With music it does everything right. Very controlled bass. When using the sub for home theater use you will get all the bass you need but if your looking for earthquakes you should look on some other sub. It play´s controlled bass with limited soundpressure. With normal soundlevels it performs audiophile bass. It´s a best buy for the price.

I have always enjoyed music and HT, but before purchasing a Digital 5.1 setup I was not living. This NHT sub fit my needs perfectly. I am using it in a small room (12X17) so I do not need to turn it up much to get the response I desire. I could easily use it in a room three times the size and still be happy with it. The external amp is nice because optical cable costs are not cheap. It is nice to be able to adjust the amplification level without moving the sub out from the wall, etc. I was contemplating spending much less for a sub, but know that it's $500 cost will be well worth it for years to come. Although it's predessor, the SubOne, is the same, NHT has decided to install the amp internally. Either way, this sub is highly recommended!

Strength:

Easy to match with other speakers, tight lows, separate amp, variable crossover points, RCA connections

Weakness:

Where do you start with such an enjoyable piece of audio gear. I needed to add base to the two sets of ProAc Super Tablette speakers, one the EBT model (two woofer's.) The room is small, 11x13, and near as dead as you can achieve.
I run dual outputs from a Marantz Class A pre-amp into the sub amps. Output of the sub amps goes to dual pair of Marantz Class A mono blocks (30 watts)which feed the ProAc's. I mostly listen to small group jazz and vocal jazz artists from CD's. Sound stage and balance took a while but if you work at the positioning of a sub unit you will be rewarded. I shopped for quite a while before I purchased the NHT's. Mirage, Volydyne etc. No dealer ever has the set up that matches yours so get a cash return with your purchase. One thing I did was to put the subs on spiked amp stands. I know they all tell you to couple the unit to the floor but in my case I had a neighbor under my apartment so it was the way to go. The whole system just 'sings.'
I've been involved in audio as a hobby for fifty years. Started with Marantz and Mac tube gear in the 50's. K horns were part of my life for a while too so I know what real bass sounds like. All of this 'experience' has made me appreciate the fine sound that the NHT's provide. Buy one or a pair. You will never look back

Strength:

Sound with music CD's is excellent. The adjustable pre-amp is a delightful combination with this sub.

Weakness:

A little too much woof when playing movies. Must adjust bass down or your teeth will vibrate out.

Excellent choice!

This is a very nice package with subwoofer and separate amp. The finish is terrific. The sound is deep, and commanding. The floor joists in the house shake even, and insulation is starting to come undone (a trip to home depot will fix that.) If it is in your price range, recommended. I give it 4 stars since I have not tested many subwoofers, but this one woofs.

Built quality, controls, finish

Weakness:

Impact for home theater

This is a very solidly built, nice looking piece of equipment. It sounds great with my pair of SuperZeros, really fills in the bottom end nicely. I initially had this unit hooked up to my home theater. But a particularly bass-heavy Dolby Digital music track on a DVD led to some horrific distortion. I honestly thought the thing was going to blow. I don't think this subwoofer was really meant to handle loud digital movie soundtrack reproduction. I have since moved it to the bedroom for strictly music listening (at reasonable volumes). But I wouldn't recommend it for home theater. I put my trusty old JBL PSW-1200 back on home theater duty. It's not the world's greatest sub, but it will play a lot louder and deeper without the clipping.
