Strength:

Solid bass, small size

Weakness:

Not designed for spikes, has spring clips, but these are minor quibbles

Purchased the PDR-10 to enhance the lower frequencies. I listen to classic rock, classical orchestra, and jazz. Paradigm Reference Studio 20 are main speakers in a 2 channel stereo music system. I hear OK bass from the Studio 20s, have wood floors, and live in a highrise, so I didn't want wall-shaking bass nor did I want a large box. I wanted just enough bass to give presence.

PDR-10 delivers all the bass I could ever want and more. It's set to the lowest frequency crossover, and I keep the gain at about 10 o'clock. PDR-10 bass is natural and not overwhelming. On sonically good source such as HDCDs from Reference Recordings, 96/24 music DVDs from Chesky, and hi-rez remasters, bass will sound awesome.

Audio Components:
NAD C740 Amp
NAD C541 CD (excellent CD player)
NAD T550 DVD (excels at playing CDs, too)
Paradigm Reference Studio 20 speakers
Paradigm PDR-10 sub

Good speaker wire and interconnects really do make a big difference overall, particularly in subwoofer sound. Paradigm + NAD are a good match. Very happy with my selection.

Paradigm products are high quality. Also, I had several technical questions that were promptly answered by Paradigm tech support.

PDR-10 is highly recommended!

Strength:

Clean, solid bass. Well behaved (not like some other subs
just can't stop). Reasonable price. More musical.

Weakness:

Not at this point

I was choosing a sub for my new HT, review suggest the Sony was pretty good, and with a very good price. I went audited it, it's not very solid bass, although very loud and shaky. Reviews at this site also suggested the Cerwin Vega is pretty decent. Also went audited it, it is solid and lound, but a little "out of control", and not very musical. It's well suited for HT alone or for party, but I also use the
sub for music as well, so this is not exactly what I want. Then came the Pradigm. Audited it, and immediately apparant that this sub is very musical, with good rhythm. Bass is clean and solid. Price is not much different that the Cerwin Vega. Used for ~1 month, very satisfied. I think I made the right choice. Highly recommand.

Strength:

Good price, quality build & with deep vroom to add depth, richness to any hi-fi system.

Weakness:

none

I've bought this sub woofer after reading all the good reviews and it has since provided me with a much richer listening pleasure to my present system. I'm using magneplanar speakers [another excellent product] driven by Harman Kardon AVR 2000 and the PDR 10 complements the set-up beautifully.

The sound and build quality is good for its price, as I've compared it with other sub woofers [Sony, Kenwoood etc.] which are often too loud and jarring for listening to music/songs.

All in all, an excellent product to complement any sound system.

Strength:

Blends perfectly with Mains ...
Tight bass

Weakness:

Doesn't go very low/loud

I like this sub very much, it's perfect for the money paid especially for music is complements my Mission 701's very well...
Only for movies I miss the REAL punch like I heard with the B&W ASW1000 or the REL Q200...
But well that is a whole different budget scene :)

For the money there is nothing wrong with this little sub.
It go's down "loud" to about 35hz
and at about 25hz ... well let's just say it isn't meant for that ..

For movie buffs this would be a little bit of a dissapointment ... for music lovers its perfect !

My system,

Mission 701 (front)
Mission 700 (rear)
Paradigm PDR10 (sub)
Yamaha RX-V596 (receiver)

Price, Bass

My 1st audio system was a pc with creative PCWorks (7 Watt sub woofer) speakers. I can say to this date I'm still amazed with those £30 babies.
However I needed somthing with more Power! so I bought a Sheerwood 7106 reciver(100x5 Watts) with Eltax Silverstone 200 floor standers.
This was a great disapointment. The 7 watt computer speakers had more bass than 100 W floorstander speakers with a 100 Watt Amp!
So I started my quest for a subwoofer. I tried the sony SAWM 20 thinking that all I needed was just a little bass. This was an even worse disapoitment. I wondered how the sony engineers could ever let such a toy out onto the market!
Any way so I upgraded to SAWM40 Still a disapointment! I tried some jpw sub a complete waste of trees. it was not even worth the wood used to make it.
I considering my budget I settled for a Paradigm PDR10.
All I can say is this is A SUBWOOFER!!!!

Strength:

Brand integrity, tight bass, not boomy, not offensive to the ears, PRICE!

Weakness:

No phase control. Other than that....none

I struggled with whether to buy the PDR 10 or PDR 12. After hearing a friends home theater with a 12, I decided to go with the 10. His bass was simply too much to tolerate for a whole movie, like Pearl Harbor. I only use it for Home Theater. I don't listen to music. I think there are two kinds of bass lovers. 1. The kind that wants Boom and more Boom. 2. The kind that likes things to sound natural. If you are #2 than get the PDR 10. If you are #1 get the PDR 12.

Strength:

Accurate, not boomy. Solid construction. Auto off.

Weakness:

None really.

For music lovers who need a sub to compliment the main speakers, this is a real bargain. This sub produces sound smoothly and accuratly, without boom or distortion, even at loud levels. It is also very good for DVD movies. But if you are looking for something to shake the paint off the walls during movie playback, you might want to look into a larger unit. However, my listening room is 15x20 and this sub does a great job, providing plenty of thunderous bass during explosive scenes. I am more than pleased with this sub. It is a perfect compliment to my Paradigm monitor 7s.

Strength:

rich bass. Price.

Six years ago I spent $800 on a set of the Bose Acoustimass V speakers. They were so much better than the $200/pair Pioneer speakers I had in college, and I thought they sounded fantastic! Not only did they look cool, everyone was telling me how great Bose speakers were.

Enter 2001. I have just bought a house, and wanted to get a Sony Wega TV, and upgrade my system from a Pioneer ProLogic system to a digital 5.1. Since I am an internet junkie, I tirelessly researched all the components. I started out needing new rear channel speakers, as my current set was garbage, and I knew that the 5 channel digital would need a bit more quality. So I went to a big electronics Superstore and tested out a bunch of speakers in the $200 price range (Infinity, etc) and they just sounded so tinny, too bright. If there was any bass, it just did not sound right. Not expecting the world, I went down to Audio Labs (a small dealer in Des Moines) and asked to hear a pair of the Paradigm Micro speakers. They were ten times better than anything I had heard at the Superstore. So I asked for a pair in black, but they were out of them. For another $25 I could upgrade to the Atom. I fired up the Atom next to the Micro, and WOW!
I could not believe the sound. I bought them and took them home.
I hooked them into my stereo on the B channel to hear them against my BoseAM5's. I could not believe how much better the tweeters were on the Atoms. And the bass was quite good, very tight. For only $180! I was a Paradigm believer.
Next up was the center channel. I called up my new best friend (the Audio Labs salesperson) and ordered up a cc-170 center channel speaker. Compared to my old Audio Source, this speaker is unbelievable. Voices have nice bass to them, all while being very accurate. Another fantastic purchase, I was hooked!
So I thought I would just go ahead and update the fronts. More research was done and I stopped in and picked up a pair of Titans, and matched them with the PDR10 subwoofer. With tax and mounting brackets, the Titan/Subwoofer combo cost me $600. So I went home to test them against the $800 Bose (which currently sell for $600.)

OMG!

The difference is unbelievable. I am just stunned. The sound is incredible. At first I have had to turn the bass down, as I am not used to truly deep, rich bass with my Bose speakers, but how was I to know?

I got a complete 5 channel speaker system which blows the doors off my old Bose speakers for $900. That is only $100 more than I paid for my Bose speakers originally. I found some sucker at my office to buy my Bose speakers for $300. Good Riddance.

See my review of the Paradigm Atoms.
The PDR-10 is a 100 watt front firing powered subwoofer with a 10" driver and a rear port.
(ads say it's 80 watts but the packaging claims it's now a 100 watt RMS amplifier)

You have speaker level inputs/outputs and a line level input as well as a subwoofer level control dial and a variable crossover control (50hz -150hz). It has auto on/off so no power switches and no phase switches.

So far I really like this sub. It seems pretty easy to blend with the Atoms. On music it works really well with the Atoms once properly placed and adjusted. I currently have it between the two front Atoms but right next to the left speaker almost in a corner. I've found that in my room I need to have the sub level set at only about 40% and the crossover set somewhere around 75hz.

This sub easily gets down to 30hz and if I turn the sub level up to 50% it'll go down to 27hz before dropping off. I don't dare go beyond 50% because I don't want to crack any plaster in our room.

On music it is most certainly not a one note subwoofer. Standup bass notes sound like notes and not just a thump.
I have a dolby digital setup and the beginning of the Cliffhanger DVD is a nice intro to test your sub and surrounds with a large helicopter circling around for a few minutes. It sounds and FEELS like there's a chopper in your living room. Very impressive...
