Strength:

Great low bass extension

Weakness:

Big (if you can call that a weakness)

Like most all other Paradigm products, it's a great deal for the money. I 1st owned the PS-1200 and loved it for HT, but later moved into a larger room which had a cement floor and I wanted something bigger. Though mainly bought just for HT, I found that this sub works great for music too, which the PS-1200 struggled with. Like most other reviewers noted... it has the ability to re-arrange your room with the right material... and it's also a very accurate and flat responding sub... Strongly recommend it for anyone looking in the 600$ range.

It's the most musically capable non-servo sub. I've ever heard, and at $800.00: an incredible bargain! In late 1998 you could buy one in Canada for roughly $535.00USD (given the exchange rate) which is an UNDENIABLE STEAL!!! So are you on a beer budget and want a sub. that gives you champagne bragging rights, directly competes with a Sunfire or HGS Velodyne, but saves you up to $1.5K in the process?!?!?! Read on.
I bought one for a friend, but experimented with it in my system to see what it could do:
* Theta Data Basic
* Adcom GDA600
* Sonic Frontiers Line 1
* Sunfire Amp
* Martin Logan Sequel I's
* Sunfire Mk. II Sub.
* Cables: various

Design: Front firing 12" woofer with a rear port; continuously variable volume, crossover, and phase controls; an auto-on circuit, 250 watt amplifier, a soft clipping circuit, and rated: 18Hz at -3dB. A glowing review in AIG measured: 16Hz at -3dB in the near field with the volume and crossover set at about their midpoints.

Equipment: As with most equipment, it needs as clean a signal as possible to begin operating at it's finest. This doesn't mean expensive, as my friend's system is fronted by a Carver CT26-V which does quite well in the low end for the money.

Placement: Somewhat dipolar in operation, it needs space from room boundaries to operate at its best. So to augment the Martin Logans in a 24' x 24' x 8.5' room, I ended up placing it about 4' from the left wall, 3' from the front wall, set the crossover at the lowest setting: 50 Hz, and the phase set at 0.

Operation: Out of the box and using the 1st Stereophile Test CD, the '2200 does a very authoritative 20 Hz; and was simply wonderful on music! It handled almost everything with ease and was SO good, that I almost sold the Sunfire to purchase two of them!!

Comparison: Only when I got to the first track of Rusted Roots' "When I Awoke", did I find the two areas where the Sunfire out-guns the '2200: articulation and dynamics. This cut is packed with percussive instruments going full tilt, and not many less than $1,000.00 subs of my acquaintance can cleanly separate the textures of the various instruments while conveying the dynamics and rhythm of the piece. For the Sunfire it's a walk in the park, but the '2200 slightly congealed them. This is not to say that the '2200 isn't a stellar overachiever (it is!) and whoops everything in its price range and THEN SOME (imo it does)! Against the aforementioned heavy-weights you may not notice this difference right off, which is excellent given the price difference! But alone in a properly set up home system, you'll be too busy/silly enjoying the performance and the vast amounts of cash you saved to even care!! Remember this is fresh out of the box; after breaking-in, it'll probably do even BETTER! Given that:

The Sunfire beats it with: greater articulation, better dynamic delineation, size, no 20 Hz port noise (not noticeable with music), a slight transformer hum when pushed (common in lower priced subs), and it doesn't operate well in a corner. So, for some people it will take up needed floor space.

It equals the Sunfire: that in the same frequency range, one was almost indistinguishable from the other on most of the music I played! So both subs sounded clean, and seamlessly crossed over to the Martin Logans.

It betters the Sunfire by: crossing over much higher more cleanly, goes lower in frequency more loudly, doesn't need much boundary reinforcement, operates cooler, and is less expensive.

The '2200 competes DIRECTLY with the "big boys" and beats them in some VERY important areas! If an experienced listener on a beer budget and in the market heard it PROPERLY setup (but say hidden behind a curtain) with associated equipment up to the task, chances are they'd think it was a Sunfire, or an F or HGS series Velodyne. Its THAT good! But while trying to maintain their giddiness over the very low price combined with its awesome performance - along with limited funds, greater desires, and the law of diminishing returns... They'll buy it!

Strength:

Excellent bass, very fast and very detailed!

Weakness:

Wife factor, says our HGS 12 was MUCH nicer looking.

I shipped my Velodyne HGS 12 out last week and I planned on buying a cheap JBL D112 for temp use untill I could buy another Velodyne or SVS CS-Ultra. The JBL was DOA and I had to eat shipping so I decided to buy a first rate performer and still pocket $500 for credit card debts. My local store MIS-Quoted ($599) me but they honored there quote and even let me take their Demo home untill my new one comes in.

I have only had the Paradigm for one day but I love it. The Velodyne seemed to have more sub-sonic bass but the Paradigm has faster and more detailed bass. The Paradigm also has the output of the Velodyne HGS 15 (above 20 HZ) and the HGS 15 has an extra 6 DB over the HGS 12. All I can say that if you are going to spend $1500-$2000 on a Velodyne HGS 12, save a bunch of money and buy the Paradigm or an SVS subwoofer.

I have only seen two movies and listened to a few songs but this sub is an awesome choice at list price then some! It hits hard and fast with excellent detail and real authority! I don't miss my HGS 12 at all!

Strength:

Clean, Tight and deep bass

Weakness:

Placement and would like to see a better finish on the box

This unit is what i needed to finish off my system nicely

Once you get the position correct and levels set this thing kicks ass I am using both RCA inputs to gain a 6db increase which i think well worth doing.

Strength:

Can fill a very large room, Home theater

Weakness:

Size

When I first hooked up this baby with my All Paradigm Studio system I thought I made a huge mistake by not getting a SVS sub (Hate the looks of a SVS sub)
But after giving it 5 or 6 hours of DVD movies, all the sudden it sounded like a completly different sub, it became very tight, and hit with authority.

Strength:

price,power,control options,sound quality and quantity

Weakness:

very long break in period

Awesome sub once long break in period (1 month) has passed. Wonderful deep bass for both music and H.T.,good accurate response,plenty of control options for placement and adaptability to various amp/speaker combinations.Great value too!Will increase the experience of H.T. to the next level,where you can feel the action.Powerful enough to satisfy anyone,shakes the drywall,concrete,or dishes off the walls,probably could do some structural damage eventually,if you are so inclined.This sub does need time to loosen up,so be patient or buy one slightly used,you should be very happy with this unit,I am!

A FAIRLY LONG BREAK IN PERIOD FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE.

I WAS HESITANT TO REVIEW THIS SUB UNTIL ALLOWING IT TO LOOSEN UP AS OTHER PREVIOUS REVIEWERS HAD DONE.THIS INITIALLY HAD ME FEELING NERVOUS ABOUT THIS PRODUCT,BUT MY PATIENCE HAS DEFINITELY PAID OFF! THIS SUB HAS THE ABILITY NOW TO SHAKE THE FOUNDATION WITH AUTHORITY,AND I MEAN SHAKE LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE.IT ALSO PLAYS VERY NICE WITH MUSIC,AND PROVIDES SEVERAL OPTIONS FOR SYSTEM INTEGRATION.DO YOURSELF A FAVOR,SHOP AROUND AND COMPARE,LOOK AT THE FEATURES.I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH MY PURCHASE. BE PATIENT AND LISTEN TO ONE OF THESE,JUST REMEMBER THAT IT TAKES TIME TO WORK THIS BIG WHOMPER IN,SOME THINGS ARE WORTH THE WAIT!TOUGH TO BEAT THE PRICE! Strength:

It's fast, keeps up with music. It kills my PS-1000 sub.

Weakness:

It's heavy and hard to transport unless you have an SUV or truck.

This is the sub I should've purchased last year. Instead I went for the sub that was almost half the price. My mistake is now corrected. This sub is fast! It's great for movies, and even better that I don't have to adjust it for music. The PS-1000 boomed and rumbled, this sub plays bass at comparable volume. When it came to music, the PS-1000 had to be turned down to almost zero. Now I have a sub that does movies and music with effortless ability.
