Strength:

Value, Attractive styling that blends in with my other Sony stuff

Weakness:

None..This is the best sub under $400 period

To those MORONS who come her only to put a good sub down!! Grow up and get a life!!. You fools probably still live at home and go window shopping on weekends!!

You wou'ld know a goods sub if it fell on your head. (which isn't a bad idea)

Anyways, I originally bought this sub for a HT system I was setting up for my sister-in-law. But when I got it home I was so impressed I decided to buy one for myself.
I really dont have much else to add except buy one and you will be amazed at the decent bass the baby throws out.

Please dont let all those idiots who try to compare this to subs costing hundreds more & are not even in the same class influence your decision.

Strength:

$700+ sound for a $200- price.
Auto on/off. Phase switch. Additional line out.

Weakness:

I wouldn't be pretty sitting out in the middle of your room, but you won't notice it sitting back in a corner.

I'm the guy who reads every review, compares every model, then finds the best value on everything I purchae. After reading all the favorable comments about this subwoofer, I went around town and did side-by-side comparisons with other major consumer brands (JBL, Klipsch, Yamaha, Cerwin Vega, Polk, AR, etc. etc.). I not only switched back and forth listening to subs running off the same source, but I also put my hand in front of each speaker to measure air volume displacement (and that's what a good sub does, folks). The Sony moved more air at lower frequencies and with less distortion than any other brand and at any price below $750. I stopped comparing above that price line because paying more for a single speaker would be silly.

I am not a fan of Sony products. I stopped buying Sony because a Sony TV, AV receiver, CD player all broke with the same problem: failed soldering connections. Sure, Sony repaired them, but I hate the entertainment down-time while waiting for repairs. So I'm breaking my "no more Sonys" rule because this sub's performance and price points are worth the risk.

I run the sub off a Yamaha Home Theatre receiver. The sub was easy to set up and calibrate with my other speakers. I used the AVIA Home Theater DVD to run the test tones so I could tell where to have the sub kick in for a smooth transition from my main speakers.

The Sony sub also has an RCA line-out for hooking up another sub, or in my case some Aura Bass Shakers.

This is the only powered sub on the market with the Energy Star rating. It uses only one watt of electricity in stand-by mode--and we are counting every watt in California these days! It automatically turns on when it receives a signal in its range, and turn off when it doesn't.

Sears has a policy of matching competitive prices--including internet prices. The lowest price I found was at inetshopping.com for $129. I printed out the web pages, took them to Sears, and they matched the price! So not only did I get the lowest price, but I got it from a reputable nationwide retailer that will stand behind its merchandise.

If you are looking for the best bang--excuse me, "boom"-- for the buck, this is your sub.

If, however, you believe that you must pay much more in order to find a better value, then there are people out there more deserving of your money and you should hurry out and give it to them so that THEY can spend it wisely.

Strength:

It sounds good..

Weakness:

You gotta break it in (duh).

To all the insane people claiming that "false people" are posting false reviews of this product, let me simply ask "WHY?!?!" Are you guys freaking mental? This sub isn't made by some backwoods hicks making inferior subs to pay the rent that send their cousins to websites in an effort to boost sales by writing false reviews.. This is made by SONY.. A company that couldn't give less of a funk about people like us- they make billions without us geeks (no offence guys ;). Seriously, sony makes crappy speakers, it's a fact.. But somehow, by some weird fluke, they made these great subs. Does it sound good for music and movie? YES... My last sub was GREAT for movies but sucked for music- I'm happy that this guy does both flawlessly (that's after careful adjustments and letting it break in). Is this sub a great value? HELL YEAH. Simply the best sub that costs under $400 (I've tried about 5 of them- since I'm a college student trying to finance a film I couldn't afford to test anything above that personally- but it did beat out an $700 klipsch that I tested at circuit city).

Anyways, I'm just angered by all these 46 year old weirdos that use run-on sentences like they're freakin 12 years old. It frightens me that they would take the time to do "people searches" to see if reviewers "exist".. THAT'S BEYOND SPOOKY! MAN, GET A LIFE!

Following up from a previous review, I took the advice of a reviewer and stuffed the cabinet (well not completely stuffed) of the sub with polyfill. What a difference it makes in regards to tightness for music. I, like some other reviewers, noticed that the sound for music could be a bit boomy at times. Filling the cabinet has made the difference, transforming the Sony from a sub that competes very well in the $300-500 range to one that competes well in the $1000 + range. Haven't tested a DVD yet, but hoping it will tighten up the sound on movies too. Great suggestion for the reviewer who tried this. Wow, this sub friggin' rocks now...

Strength:

Weakness:

having to wade through snotty pretentious fools like the EAR
(most think highly of himself) to reviews that allow someone to make a buying decision.

To the "EAR" ....please go away I have read your reviews
(if you can call them that, mostly wailing about products you probably sell, but dont own) in the past - THE AVERAGE GUY ISNT BUYING IT. If I had the money to purchase these highend pieces, I would be most turned off by people like you and probably save my money in spite of ya!

As far as some of the gear you have mentioned: Dynas are overrated. They gotta be plainest sounding and looking speaker. M&K - here's a make right up your alley; marketed for snob appeal, does it sound that much better NO. Paras -
more marketing designed for people who want to think they got something highend in midfi price ranges.

Does THIS Sony subwoofer stand up to the above mentioned gear? Of course not. But leave it to you brainiac for pointing out the obvious. We see you working, now go away.

Strength:

Great value, great sound for movies

Weakness:

Slightly boomy for music

I bought this sub based on reviews here and hometheaterforum.com. So far, I am very happy with it. It's real big, but I hide it behind a chair. Very easy to set up, and sound really makes a difference. I may try the polyfill fix to take care of the boominess, but overall it shakes my house to the foundation. Highly recommended. Listened to Polk and JBL subs, and found this one at least comparable to $500+ subs.

Strength:

Good detail on bass response. If bass is what you are looking for this is the one.

Weakness:

For the price, it has no weakness it's comparible to subs costing three times it's price.

I'm hear sitting watching the screen looking at all the junk everyone is writing to each other. And it just makes me laugh. I am a professional sound lab competitor and tester (not a vendor, I don't sell anything) but I want to write my comment as a consumer. I shopped around for several weeks comparing prices, with features and brands. At first I had my mind set on Cerwin Vega who has been a dominent force in the subwoofer industry for several years. But when I tested a 15", $400 sub and compared it to the little 12', $200 Sony sub I did'nt really get much of the diffrence on the frequecy response and overall decibel level from one to another I could'nt see why I should pay twice as much. The same thing went for the JBL 12" model I tested. The Bose was a bit richer in it's sound quality but once again it was nothing to glote about. As for the more expensive subs costing from $1000-$5000 in comparison to the Sony, ask your self is it really worth it for the money. Consider this, valuable scientific research has determined that the average human ear cannot hear frequecies lower then 20 hz and a small percentage of people (not the average) are able to hear frequencies lower then 15 hz. So why would you want to get an expensive sub able to play super low frequencies if you can't hear them. And if you say you can hear them; well then that tells us that your father SATAN taught you well on how to lie. :) Is there a great deal of diffrence on the sound quality from the Sony to the $1k-$5k subs. Well you do get a little more bang out of the more expensive ones, and they are able to handel the frequeny response a little bit more adequate. But you must understand that the experience will be the overall same experience, and ultimetly you will be achieving one same thing BASS. So for the little diffrence,is it worth being a few thousand dollars short in you bank account to listen to the bass in your music and movies?

Strength:

Great bass

Weakness:

??

This is a follow up to a review I posted before. For those experiencing the "boom" factor, try moving the sub AWAY from the wall! Yes, this may fly in the face of convention, but since the sub has such a long rear-firing port, the effect is a boomy sound when placed too close to the rear wall.
Also, try using a foam insulator, as the energy from the rearward motion needs to find it's way to the port, and not be absorbed too much. This will get rid of the cabinet resonance, and the boom factor. ALSO, use spiked feet! I can't stress enough how much this will tighten up the bass.

I have read several articles on the net about properly setting up a sub. One interesting note about the phase/polarity switch. It is advised that whichever setting produces the loudest bass at your sitting position is the correect setting. Second, there is no substitute for experimenting with placement, crossover, volume & phase settings. I have a pair of full range main speakers, and find setting the crossover point at it's lowest setting works well for me.

Hope this helps current owners & potential buyers. (Spiked feet can be ordered at partsexpress.com)

Strength:

nothing relly the bass is kinda weak.
other then that this sub was relly good for my sisters mini system it added the mid bass spot.

Weakness:

yes there is some weaknesses for instince this sub relly lacks low end reproduction bass. when the level control on the sub is turned up about to the nine o clock point and my amp is turned the about 28 the sub will distort and bottom out & you relly dont hear any deep bass just port noise.

weak bass you dont get any deep bass the bass stops around the 38 to 42 hz point any lower and the sub distorts or bottoms out OR you will hear port noise.
i sent mine back and got a Polk Audio PSW-250 it's way way tighter and yes it plays way deeper i never knew a 50 watt 8" sub can go deeper then the sony 12"
go check out the polk audio line of subs.
