Strength:

Price to performance ratio, musicality as a sub, size, abilty to perform with HT

Weakness:

None for the price

Let me prefece everything by stating I do not own the Sony but auditioned it at BB. For the price/performance under $200 it can't be beat. It is musical and will provide the boom you would expect from a sub. It completely outclassed the KLH sub and was able to compete against the JBL PB10.

With all that said, do not think this sub will be able to outperform a Velodyne, HSU, SVS, Klipsh, or Paradigm sub. All those subs are in a completely different league than the Sony. You'd be comparing apples to oranges.

For those people on a tight budget, this will suffice for your needs. For those who can afford better, look elsewhere. I can say the Sony is the best sub under $250. Over that, the SVS line of subs offers the best bang for the buck. When reviewing anything, please remember to compare the item to equally priced items.

Strength:

For all you potential buyers: do an audition with your equipment or something similar first. Then decide. For it is now impossible to rely on the reviews made here.

Scott- teehee. That's incompetence for the ages. Saying the sub has a "plastic amp enclosure" and pointing that out as a major weakness is simply saying every amp made >1990 is crap. And I point out that both you and John (now far below) are idiots because there is no such thing as a plastic AMP. Why? Well, plastic is incapable of carrying CURRENT (which, by some STRANGE connection, is measured in...AMPeres)!
Velodyne, Klipsch, Mirage, Infinity, Boston Acoustics, NHT, Monitor, JBL, Cerwin-Vega, Def Tech, Yamaha, Polk, Paradigm. Those ranged from 8" to 15". He's right, no experience whatsoever. And yes the smaller ones ARE tighter. My EAR told me that. It's also a well-known fact in the audio world. Gee, but of course the subs above aren't "quality," so what the hizell am I talking about. And I attend Notre Dame on academic merit, so obviously I don't have any "intelligence" or "knowledge" either.

I wonder about your utter hate for Sony, despite an apparent loyalty to the company's products. Seems an inability to afford higher-grade components will indeed make one crabby and vengeful.
Finally, paper cones aren't weaknesses unless you tend to poke ultra sharp knives at drivers. If a speaker sounds good that's all that matters. Oh, wait, this speaker does sound good. I've said that repeatedly throughout my reviews.
Thus, in retrospect I still think the $120 was worth it.
I for one am not going to be childish and post this a million times; I've made my point- in Socratic fashion. Professor Gutting would be proud. I certainly am.

Strength:

Wonderful range, price.

Weakness:

None that i have seen yet.

This sub is amazing. For the price i simply can't see the sound being better. The level does need to be set a little higher than some subs i tested but i don't really see that as a weakness. This is the first sub ive ever owned and it adds an entire new dimension to everything i listen too. The base is very clean for both movies and music so i could not be more satisfied. Get one now cause before you know it they will be gone, more and more people are realizing that this sub can compete with a much more expensive sub.

Strength:

NEVER! gets hot, great room filling bass and best of all it's a SONY!!!!

Weakness:

The idiots on this site that give it a negative review.

Ok, I've tried to hold my tongue, but come on ppl! This is a fantastic sub!!! The only reason ppl bash this sub is that is made by Sony. As per Home theater Mag. review the #1 Electronic manufacturer was Sony! Yep! We love Sony. Also, the #1 hated manufacturer was....Sony!!! Yep, we hate Sony! This sub rokcs!

The more it breaks in, the better it sounds. 95% of my listening is for HT and this is where this sub shines! It's great for music too, but my world is HT and there's nothing better than when the kids come running downstairs, yes, downstairs!, and ask "What was that?" And I get to reply "Just T-REX walking around!"

So to all you sony bashers: Get a life, this is yet another great product from Sony.

BTW, please feel free to drop by and bash my system at:

Peace...Don

PS>There are line level in/out and spring clips for speaker wire connections on the back of this sub. You can run another sub off it if your A/V R doesn't have 2 sub outputs.

Some ppl should at least look at the back of the sub before they post.

Great sounding sub well worth twice as much $$.

Weakness:

Seems to draw lying idiots who claim to have knowledge of accoustics, or have a degree in such. Call his college. They have no such student (present or past) on file.

If you're considering this sub, do yourself a favor and read through all of the posts listed.

I apologize for reposting a review again. I wanted everyone to know that I have written an e-mail complaint to Norbert Schmeid (the webmaster of this site). In this e-mail, I mentioned the problematic posts of one "Frankie Verner", or whatever he is posting under at the moment. Any so-called credibility this man has is trashed by his obsessive negative posts and reposts.

If you would like to add further weight to my complaint, please feel free to send an e-mail to the webmaster of Audioreview.com. His address is norbert@audioreview.com

This site exists for many reasons -- one of which is to provide audio listeners with useful product reviews. It is a shame that the childish antics of one would seek to undermine the usefulness of this site for all.

Any by the way, I AM contacting Penn State's graduate program and forwarding a copy of the continued obsessive e-mails this "Frankie" guy posts. Perhaps his childish remarks and "exhaustive" test numbers on this Sony sub will help him to achieve this Masters in Accoustic Engineering he is after.

Perhaps, rather than building a sub box as a final project, Penn State would find it more useful if Frankie did an exhaustive research project about why over 70+ random music listeners could be so thrilled with this Sony sub, when Frankie Verner's test numbers "prove" it to be a piece of junk?

Go ahead and post all you want, Frankie. You only condemn yourself!
