Alright Frankie boy, if this sub is such junk for it's category, why the hell don't you tell us just what sub is so much better for $129? I can tell you why, cause there isn't any. There's is absolutely no better sub for this price. Second, you said that a bad sub will sound bad no matter what room you're listening to it in. Well, that's partly wrong and partly correct, but mostly wrong. You said that sub sounded just as bad in your sound room as it did at Best Buy or whatever store you purchased it from. That is just plain said. The listening room at most stores, especially Best Buy is setup so incorrectly that nothing will sound right. A speaker that sounds bad at the store will sound much different when you take it home. Infact, any speaker will sound different in every room that you put it in. If you cannot tell the difference, then you must be deaf. Also, if you're so damn smart, how come you can't click "post review" without hitting the button twenty times?

Strength:

Good solid bass, hits hard like the theaters, plays deep.

Weakness:

boomy, amp is actully 80 watts rms not 120 watts,
What they mean in 120 watts is the max ouput.

This sub is pretty good for the price but one thing i thought you would like to know is that the amp is only 80 watts rms 120 watts max output, second of all the sub can only do 35hz to the most.
I thought that it could use more power and the Velodyne CT-150 which i now own is 50 times better.

Strength:

price and deep bass.

Weakness:

none

This subwoofer does deliver the bass you need for your home theater. Pop up some DTS movies and you'll be amaze with the sound it produce. Can't believe that sony can make their speaker compete with other high end subwooper.

Strength:

Boom! With a 12" woofer plus 120watts you better tape the knick knacks down if you're gonna crank it up!

Weakness:

A bit too loose and rumbly for music, can be modified if you'd like though.

Best HT sub for under $300 (for $300+ think Velodyne) The usual placement issues are there, but I think that goes for nearly all subs. But let me tell you, if you have this baby up around 3 or 4 and don't seem to be getting sufficient bass, MOVE IT AROUND BEFORE YOU CRANK IT UP, because this sub has boom.

I originally had it flush to the wall in a corner and did not seem to be getting that big bass. Kept cranking it little by little until I was up around 7 or 8 on the dial. Then I got smart on starting checking out the room. I started by walking around the room during boomy parts in a movie. I found the bass was "shooting" around both walls and terminating in the corner diagonal from the sub. Upon standing in that corner for a while, I about felt like someone was punching me around the ears! The bass assault was overwhelming! So I moved the sub out and over and that seemed to cause more bass to be in middle of the room (where I wanted it) and now I have it set at about 3 and half.

I recommend a sound pressure meter to set your sub volume. Going by ear on the pink noise test is just ridiculous. You just cannot hear how loud it really is. You can get one from Radio Shack for $35 (sound level meter I believe is how it is referred to on their site)

Overall a great sub for HT.

Strength:

tight strong floor shaking bass

Weakness:

none yet ... been at it almost a year and still in love with it

love it !

tight clear bass,, and, if anything,, too much of it ( if that possible)

I passed on the KLH syndrome,, and went shopping to find a 8 or 10 inch sub around 150.00 ... was surprised to find a sony 120 watt 12" sub in my price range. The salesman was too stupid too be able to turn it on ... so I made a deal if I didnt like it, I woould return it ...

I didnt ... in fact ... I may buy a second one !

If you are shopping for a sub,,, dont miss this one ! You would be doing yourself a HUGE injustice !

My room is 17 X 19 with 9 1/2 ft ceilings,, i have it aimed into the corner,, and it just ^&(^(^(&%*&^* ROCKS !

Great for music,, better for movies ! I have mthe volume cut back quite a bit,, lots of room to grow !

my system:
Kenwood VR209 receiver

JBL 2600 w/ titanium tweeters mains

Advent babys ?? surrounds

Sony "center" 2x6 ( was part of a pair of a/v mains .... makes GREAT center cheap ... sold my Infinity for it !

Apex 600a DVD player

Hughes dish

and this sub

put in Jumanji ... the stampede scene literally vibrated the toilet set 3 rooms and 35 feet away ! !
every time the guy shoots the elephant gun ... it flickers the lights .... all this and you still hear every word of the dialogue ...

My daughter and her boyfriend come to my house INSTEAD of going to the theatre ... its really that good ! ( I make her leave the disc so I can watch it ... I take her baby somewhere else while they watch the movie ... its WAY too intense for a toddler!)

thanx for listening .... now get up and go get one !

Strength:

Low, solid bass, not boomy at all. Surprisingly solid build. Paid $189 at Best Buy.

Weakness:

UGLY! What were the designers thinking?

Went through the infamous KLH self-destruct sequence, and refused to give them another chance.Suffering from bass withdrawal, I went in search of a better sub. Had my eye on the Velodyne CT-100, Polk PS350 or Cerwin Vega LW-12. Felt guilty about spending almost 400 dollars on myself so near Christmas, then stumbled on the Sony. To me it didn't look like a "real" sub, so I left. However, after reading the reviews here decided to try it out. For some reason, I set it up in the same spot and used the same settings as the KLH. Disappointed at first at the lack of sound, discovered it was a lack of boom I was hearing. Have been tweaking settings and position for awhile now, and it sounds great. Loud,Deep, rumbly, tight or punchy, take your pick. Bought it for movies but sounds very good with music too. Using the sub output of my receiver with the five channels set to small. Give it a test run, you'll be surprised.

Strength:

Awesome, balanced bass that's clean and rich

Weakness:

I live in an apartment and my neighbors now hate me.. haha.. umm.. The sony name kept me away (sony audio is usually crap in my opinion) but screw that, this sub rocks!

Thank you guys!!! I'm in love with this sub.. It still needs some breaking in but it's simply amazing (regardless of it's price)! You're advice rocks and keep up the good work!!!!!!!

P.S. SEARS gave me a lot of crap about not beating the lowest price that I found on it ($129).. They said that I would have to pay shipping and tax.. Luckily, a local e-tailer had it for $159.. With enough arguing (the turd of a manager said that it would cost me at least $3 to get to that location via public transportation!!!), he agreed to match that without shipping (the things heavy so I probably saved a good $30 or 40 bucks). These jerks make up their own rules so be prepared to fight and don't back down!.
value - 10 stars (out of 5) :)

Strength:

price, good frequency response

Weakness:

none so far

This is the first sub that I have bought from a store. The sub seems to have a nice flat frequency response. There are no frequencies that have a bad resonance problem. The room that the sub is in is small so I have no problems with it getting loud. I to almost bough the infamous KLH sub at Costco. But at Best Buy, I was able to compare these to subs practically side by side. The Sony is much tighter. I also listened to the Yamaha 150 watt sub with the two 8" woofers. The Sony was better than that sub as well and $100 less. You can get this sub for less on the internet if you want to wait for it(I couldn't).

Strength:

Its inexpensive,it has a nice SONY badge.

Weakness:

$15 driver in a $20 cabinet with a $35 amp.All this for $200!WOW great deal Boomy, boomy and more boomy, undefined and screaming for mercy when Telarc spectaculars play.

The SONY sub is only boomy,it may boom and impress anyone who did not hear a real sub tuned properly in a real system.

When I put Velodynes HGS series,Sunfires,HSUs,SVS subs its to give the potential buyer an idea what to audition. What to aim for, since obviously most posters here have no clue what a real sub should do.

A real sub does not boom,it starts where the speakers leave and extends the frequency response.A real sub is silent when no real sub bass is present.A real sub will blend to amost perfetion with the mains. The SONY can only belnd with boomy El Cheapos. The Sony colorations prevent this bass module to fit in a good music system.

Now you sould learn to spell Aerial Acoustics. And your DIY project will come short of the Aerial, output is one parameter to judge subs, freedom from coloration, accuacy are others just as important.

And FYI I own 6 subs,Sunfire Junior,Mark 2,Signature,Carver Knight Shadow and Aerial Acoustics SW12.Plus a inexpensive sub,Klipsch SW12.And soon I will get the SVS Ultras(powered by a Carver TFM-75,he he)and a Revel 15.

So yes you are right on ONE point I AM A SUBWOOFER FREAK,not freek. And a proud BASS FREAK.Quality bass, not boomy, colored unaccurate bloated bass.

Still the Sony is way overrated,a real sub extends the spectrum and does in no way ruin good speakers like this joke.Fact

Still give a FAIR deal because the thing can be had for peanuts.
