Quality, Tight, Clean Bass, Price

Weakness:

Somewhat Ugly

Relatively new to HT and relied on posts here. Thank you fellow reviewers, am deeply in your debt. Love this sub. Ditto 5 stars for value and overall. Sears match is a great deal. It does music and HT proud.

It's kind of homely, but I suppose its hard to make a sub with a "12 driver inconpicuous looking.

Again, thanks to all who recommended this product.

Strength:

Great Bass, Nice and tight. PRICE!!!!!

Weakness:

none at all

This is a reply to JERKS like Frankie and others, who try there best to bring down the rating by posting the same stupid negative review of this great SONY product.

I love this SUB. I have a DCM that is working along with the SONY SUB. The SONY sub makes my DCM sound like a 2 inch tweeter.

The sound quality is UNMATCHED for the PRICE. Even on my DirecTV system, using Dolby Pro Logic, the bass is richer, not booming and really adds to my TV viewing experience.

Why would someone speak negatively of such a great product from sony. Maybe they wasted 600.00 on a SUB and it sounds just like or worse than the SONY.

Deal with it. This is a wonderful SUB, I live in an apartment, and my neighbors HATE me.

SO be it!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHUT UP FRANKIE and anyone else who has anything NEGATIVE to say about this AWESOME SUB!!!!!!!

if you want rich deep roomfilling bass that plays clean and that could go loud when it needs to then buy this sub because this sub sounds better then subs costing up to $800 dollers i thought that sony made cheap sounding speakers but when i heard this one i thought wrong DEAD WRONG this sub rock it's the best sub you can get for your money.

Strength:

sub kicks ass! awesome bass for music.

Weakness:

a little big for what i need, but hey this sub rocks!. can be a little boomy but to fix that play with the volume and crossover levels. that eliminates the problem very fast.

this sub is awesome for the price. i have it attached to my sony mhc-m300av stereo. most of the time i have the crossover set at 3 o'clock and the volume at 1 to 3 o'clock. i am using it mainly for music and it is awesome. to me it doesn't lag, the bass is great and not to boomy. anyone who bashes sony products do not know what the hell they are talking about. every ht/music product in my house is sony. i have this system in my room which is 10x12 and i have an older sony system in the living room which has 2 tower speakers. sony really puts out. i haven't even tried this sub for ht so i am curious to see what it will do.
i recommend to go get one of these subs now because they are going fast. my suggesting is to go crutchfield.com and get one from them. the total was 209.90 with 2-day shipping. 2-day shipping! the subtotal was 199.00. only 10 bucks for shipping. go get one!

Strength:

Best in Home Theater use, and Price!

Weakness:

Not tight enough for my musical tastes, spring clips

First of all thanks to all those who support this site by writing quality reviews. I've been gradually piecing together a HT system and saw the reviews on this sub. I saw it advertised at a local K's merchandise for $129 so I went out and bought it,... they only had 4 left when I got mine.

This sub seems to be best in Home Theater use. The rumbles, roars, booms,... are great. The sound depth it adds while viewing a movie is fantastic.

I don't quite have the same enthusiam for music listening with this sub though. It seems to be a little on the muddy side for my preference. I prefer a nice solid thump or punch, which it seems to lack. As one reviewer noted earlier a 12" sub is not going to be as tight as an 8" sub in most cases. I would have to agree with that assessment at this point. I've tried different settings and just can't seem to find the sweet spot I'm looking for.

I have to give it a 5 star rating for value. For HT application it also deserves 5 stars. For music listening though I'd say it's only average...3 stars.

Strength:

Solid Low Bass, Blends well in my listening room

Weakness:

None so far

I've read many reviews stating that this sub is not well suited for music and I disagree. It all depends on the placement in your room and the level and crossover controls. I spent a good deal of time finding the right location and settings on all the controls. There is absolutely no substitute for taking the time to find the right location and settings for your subwoofer. You could spend thousands and still be dissapointed without proper setup! So far I have not been dissapointed. I get "kick in the chest" low bass that is both solid and clean in both movies and music. Keep this clearly in mind- if your ears can detect either clearly or subtly the location of your sub in the room it is not set up right. It should be both solid and powerful but blend cleanly with your other speakers. Once you acheive this as I have you will find this sub is well worth the money.

Strength:

rich sound

Weakness:

geared for movies

i'm not a genuine audiophile, but i see what people mean when they say this sub is good for movies. it tends to boom quite a bit with the volume up (which is great for an action movie, but not so much for music). placement is also very important too. i had it next to an interior wall in my basement and it was shaking the crap out of it. i couldnt find a good place to put it without it sounding isolated.

finally i stuck that sucker underneath the pool table. wow. now it kicks ass down there. deep rich sound, no rattling or shaking. if you have a pool table put it under there! it's essentially a huge, hollow, extremely heavy wooden box so it makes a great speaker.

i put on "another brick in the wall part I" and was in heaven. get the warranty from best buy. 6 years no questions asked return policy.

Strength:

Excellent range, tight bass, smooth transitions from sound extremes, compact

Weakness:

unfortunately slightly underpowered

I looked for ~2mo's for an excellent sub and was set on purchasing the Velodyne CT100. I continued to try and find a cheaper sub though secondary to my being the average consumer (ie, broke). I followed this sight's reviews of the subs that I've come into contact with and I must say that overall the judgements have been fair (though I wouldn't go off of what 10 or less people think). Anyway, I went and auditioned this woofer, the SAWM40 and initially the model I saw was kicked in and the cone torn and thus, sounded poor. I went to other day and saw one that obviously had been used at Best Buy quite a while and yet it was the loudest, most intact and controlled woofer I heard. This was compared to the Cerwin Vega's and the Yamaha's. I was impressed enough to pay full price and I don't regert it. It set up quick and plays well, if not a little quiet. This however is easily remedied by turning up the gain either on the sub or the bass on my receiver. This sub is close to the best (for future reference I think the absolute best sub available is the SPL series from Velodyne).

Strength:

loud and clear sound, kick drums sound like theyre in the same room with you.

Weakness:

distorted at times, only sometimes

this subwoofer is an addition to a home stereo system i got for christmas. i have the sony mvc300 (i believe) with surround sound and satellite speakers. the system itself had no bass at all, unfortuneatly and after reading all the positive reviews for this sub i bought it at best buy.
this sub helped the overall sound of my stereo a lot, but the thing that bothers me is that i had to connect the sub to the stereo through the speaker wires as opposed to the subwoofer jack.i connected the subwoofer to the stereo with the jack but found that i had to turn the volume on the sub up all the way to hear any discernible bass notes. i dont know if this is the sub itself or the crappy quality of the sony surround stereo but i feel by connecting the sub through the speaker wires is cheating me of the full potential of this sub as i cannot put it in a corner or anywhere far from the annoyingly short sony speaker wire.
anyway, the sound for this sub is really nice. when watching dvds it really is crystal clear and adds a lot to the experience, i used to watch fight club prior to having the subwoofer and was upset with the lack of bass but now you can really hear the punches and all the bass filling up the room. for music i wont lie but this subwoofer isnt as good as i thought it would be, after hearing TV shows and DVDs. however, after owning this sub for a few months it sounds a lot better than when i first bought it and i guess it really depends on the quality of the CD youre listening to, as older CDs tend to sound less stellar than brand new ones.
all in all am happy for buying this subwoofer and i would recommend it to those who do not have the budget to go for the expensive subs.
