Strength:

Had this sub for about 1 year 6 months still puts out nice deep clean bass with no distortion still sounds awesome

Weakness:

none

had this sub for about 1 and a half years and nothing is wrong with it still puts out tight clean acurate bass down to 20 hz and it sounds even better. One you get a new sub
you got to work in the woofer after about 3 months it sounds the best and still has been sounding great .

Great Bass at a Even Better Price

Weakness:

None.

This is a great subwoofer but like the reveiw below I have to crank it up past the half mark to feel the bass but it's great. Also i think it depends on the LFE encoded on to the dvd. when i play the T2 ultimate edition DVD on it with DTS and the "DTS Experience" comes on before the movie it is a room shaking experience ... and then the THX logo comes on and it does the same... That is the only disc I have to turn the sub down for. I had it in a corner for a while which worked but since the cable is short I couldn't keep it there and it is about 12 inches away from being in a corner so it doesn't sound as loud because the bass doesn't have that extra wall to bounce the sound off of. This sub never heats up either. I've felt the back of the sub even after a whole movie is done it had very little heat coming from it.

but all in all, it is a great sub and I am very happy with it. But hopefully it won't breakdown like the KLH or the JBLs I've read about in audioreveiw.com. But this sub is being bought and stores are running out of stock.

Strength:

Tight bass and so quick for being 12". Affordable quality.

Weakness:

Pretty ugly. Sometimes the bass gets muddy, so you have to fool around with the cutoff frequency dial.

This Sony sub can compete with ones that cost literally three times as much. It is well-built, accurate, clean, and powerful (sometimes too powerful). I got it at Sears for $119 because I showed them a price at inetshopping.com and then opened a sears charge for an extra 10 off. What a deal! It was that last SA-WM40 they had left, though, so I got lucky. People, these subs are becoming very hard to find, so if you are interested I suggest you get to looking.
Overall this product defies the Sony rep and truly adds a whole new dimension to any sound system, whether it's for music or home theater. Certainly though this sub deserves more than a "5" for value since I got it so cheap and it is so good. Oh well.

Strength:

superior deep powerful bass..... absoulutley the beat bang for your buck ... excellent clean sound !!!!!

Weakness:

the gain has to be set at about 50% to get the desired effect .... then again it produces all the bass youll ever need, and then some, for most home entertainment systems

absolute great value and sound quality.. deep rich bass !!!
no complaints whatsoever. puts others in its class to shame, including yamaha. i would recommend this subwoofer to anyone with a moderate sized home entertainment system.
my only advice is to buy it while you can ... dealers cant keep them in stock !!!!!
once again another quality product from sony

Strength:

great price, great performance, appears to have quality parts.

Weakness:

poor aesthetics for putting just anywhere.

fantastic sounding product.all of the bells and whistles one would need.blennds perfectly with my rather small optimus pro-x77's (eat your heart out bose).this is just a little tip to help in placement if you purchase on of these subs. try setting the sub up in your normal listening position, put something on with good bass content then walk around the room listening for the area that provides the best bass response and this is where you should place your sub. no muss no fuss. just a little more f.y.i. a few years back sony came out with a pair of speakers that even the audiophiles had to admit were a top notch pair of speakers.(info courtesy of stereophile mag.) so sony is quite capable of building a first rate anything, including a sub.
well that's it for me...................ROCK ON!

none for the price

Lets just say that Im not a know-it-all when it comes to audio/video eq. but I know when I got a deal. This sub is great!!! Some have been saying that its not the sub for music.....well, I havent had the chance to play all my favorite cds but the ones I have sounded great. Now for dvds, things couldnt be better. You are missing so much by not having a sub. This thing will give you a headache if you dont have it set properly......I KNOW!! I swear you can rattle the windows, dishes, dog dish, the neighbors......have I said enough?? Anyone interested go to inetshopping.com they are selling it for 139.00 but its on b/o. I printed the ad and took it to sears (199.00 thier price) they matched the price and I had it in 5 days. For the price and sound there is no match....have fun.

Strength:

The bass is excellent at this point.

Weakness:

None to speak of for the amount paid $139

The Sub is great. I really liked this forum because it gave me a realistic expectation of the product. I was well informed about the "break-in" period of 15 to 20 hours. I am currently allowing the speakers to play while I am at work. I put on a good bass song with about 1/4 volume so tht they will go through that break-in sooner. I cannot wait to hear the bass at post break in. I think that this is a very good deal because it is very economical and it is a quaility item. I have seen some on this forum complain about the enerysaver option on the sub. I like it! I also saves power and maybe even product life.

Strength:

Cheap, loud, neato.

Weakness:

looks like woofer gets overpowered easily?

im happy with this sub for the price but it doesnt really work the same as the sub i have for my computer. I also dont think it was made to. I havent had a chance 2 bring my actual bookshelf speakers up 2 my dorm 2 try the whole system i have with it, but it is pretty cool. I would rather have this than spend 300+ on something else. the 8" subs in my bookshelfs will probably give enuf drum bass for music so its all good. I am thinking about putting a diffrent driver in there because the stock one seems kinda *crappy*(edited).

Strength:

Underworldly, deep, tight bass when modified. High quality output from a low priced sub.

Weakness:

Needs a modification to acheive most desirable results

I recently purchased the SAWM40 as a replacement for the blown sub in my Sony SAVE315 set. I’d always been quite satisfied with the output from my old woofer but the SAMW40 has made realize this one simple truth…ignorance is bliss. I simply didn’t know what I was missing.

The day I picked up the sub I gave it a quick spin. Some of the reviews here (of which I’d read almost all) had complained that initially the bass was less tight than they’d hoped for, especially with music. Indeed, I did perceive some looseness on a few of my reference DVD’s and it was more apparent on music CD’s. However, I found this effect to be augmented or reduced significantly according to placement of the woofer. Nevertheless, I wanted to achieved the tightest, deepest bass possible, so I wasted no time heading out to Wal-Mart to grab a bag of Polyfil (pillow case stuffing). As other reviews suggest below, I opened the sub, lined the inside walls (except the port wall) with the Polyfil and re-sealed it. I made a few adjustments concerning the crossover frequency and then that’s when it happened. KA-BOOOOOM!!! I’m talkin’ clean, crushing, unearthly bass that cannot be described, only experienced. I watched as my new sub morphed itself into an unholy, unyielding and vicious beast. From the resounding thuds of impact tremors and the forceful concussion of grenades, to the husky throttle of high-powered Harleys and the pounding bellows of deep water depth charges, this woofer oozes all kinds of low frequency goodness. And as for music, all looseness issues were resolved and the box is now churning out robust, big-fanny-in-spandex tight bass.

On the down side, I did have to play around with placement and tweak the settings in my receiver (Sony STRDE-845) as well as those of the sub itself to achieve these results. That did take a second or two… or three. It was nothing unexpected though and to me that’s half the fun. It’s also not the prettiest sub in the world - not exactly a dog, but certainly lacking svelte. But to me these misdemeanors are barely worth mentioning. Just buy one and a $2 bag of Polyfil. You won’t be sorry.

I want to thank all the people who posted here for helping me make an informed decision and steering toward this product.
