Strength:

None

Weakness:

Always breaks

This is a follow up review to one I submitted awhile back. Just got off the phone with sunfire rep. he's sending me a box so I can send the sub back for repairs, for the second time in two years.

When I get it back, it's for sale if anyone's interested. I'm tired of it blowing the main driver.

At first I had a lot of trouble with this little box. I put it in a perfectly good size corner and made all the connections. Gave it a good listen to and was blown away at the bass that was coming out. But, after a few days the sub started distorting a lot. This had me baffled as to what the problem was. Finally I called up Sunfire and they gave me some hints on what I should do and around what position the knobs should be at. I made all the adjustments and also put on the extra feet they suggested to use. I have carpet floor so I though I did not need the extra feet. Big mistake, no matter what use the extra feet supplied they made a huge difference and helped eliminated my distortion problem. Now I just sit back and enjoy my body being rattled at the bass in music and the explosions in movies. Go Sunfire!

1) The sub is small and very easy to hide. 2) It puts out a lot of sound, which is great for home theater.
That's all the good points though. I tried desperately to like these speakers (since I like sunfire electronics). Went to 3 different stores and even had a guy move it to a different room. The thing huffs and puffs so much is creates a disturbing flapping sound like it's in a mis-sized box and has poor accuracy. It destroys the enjoyment of listening to music with it's boomy flapping noises.

The Sunfire Mk. II. is the lowest reaching subwoofer while doing it cleanly for the money ($1,299) that I've heard, and have the pleasure of owning.
Compared to the Velodyne series that copied the Sunfire concept, it sounds ever-so-slightly cleaner then the HGS-12 and performs quite a bit better then the '10. Both of which costing progressively more money from the '10 to the '12. The Sunfire operates unobtrusively as it usually likes being placed in a corner out of the way of things. However, the sound is extremely dynamic, low in frequency, and incredibly clear (if you have the equipment capable of it, and know how to set it up). One listen to the opening track of Rusted Root's "When I Awoke" aptly proves this. Not every sub. is capable of separating all of the textures in this densely populated percussive piece while providing the prerequisite visceral slam and rhythm that accompanies it.

Velodyne states roughly 1% distortion for some of their subs., what they DON'T tell you however, is the low volume it takes to get that stat. One may be able to get a 5" midrange to do 20Hz at 1% distortion, but you wouldn't be able to hear the output of the driver... This is not to knock Velodyne's subwoofers, many of them are EXCELLENT, there's just better for less money!

As another example of how good this subwoofer is: have you noticed how many companies have rushed the principles Bob Carver popularized in the Sunfire Sub. to their products? Both Velodyne and Mirage have "copies" (as it were) of the Sunfire (especially Mirage) and many companies are implementing similar amplifier techniques... You know a product is pretty good when the competition copies you!

I heard allot of subs before getting this one. I have this sub for about a year and I enjoy it very much. Space is very limited in NY city so I couldnt go with anything bigger anyway. This sub is capable in giving a very clean low-end frequency sound without any distortion known to the human ear.It plays loud and clean and it excells in the very low octave over other subs costing more. This sub is not the best sub for mid high bass or mid bass, this sub is a winner when the demand is the ultra low bass.I believe thats the way a sub should be because its your front speakers that should handle good mid bass anyway not the sub. I heard the immitation from Velodyn and the Sunfire still sounds better because it will play louder and lower. It takes a Sub with an 18 inch cone to stand against this baby and for the money it will be hard to find any sub that can outperform this one. I recomend using speakers with some mid bass before getting this sub. I do not recomend using this sub with small bookshelf speakers because this sub was made for bringing out the lowest frequencies. I believe all subs in the futer will be using this remarkable invention from Bob Carver.

SUNFIRE SUBWOOFER MK II - Wow, does this thing pump out bass. I had an inexpensive subwoofer ($400.00) and it never seemed quite right. Now I know why. The Sunfire is tight and fast and bass sounds real. Not boomy. Buy one, or two.

This sub rocks, but it has to be placed properly in order to work right. It won't work well when not placed in a corner. I had the Hum problem(caused by ground loop) also at first, but by following the sunfire instructions I was able to eliminate it, by using a 3 to 2 prong plug adapter. It shakes my whole house, when in use.

*** ATTENTION ***
This is one of the finest Sub's out there for the money!! However, YOU NEED TO USE A SUB-WOOFER STAND for great results!! This is a sub that truly has the power necessary for real sub-bass sounds. With its long throw woofer, it is awesome as far as accuracy. To truly harness this power, you need to stabilize the unit. The proper way to do this is a stand. You will be amazed at how accurate this unit becomes when set up properly. I have found that it is significantly more accurate than the Sunfire Signature model. Do yourself a favor and purchase this sub and a good stand to put it on. Put it in a corner about 6" to a foot away from each wall and be prepared for what you'll hear. I wish there was a six star rating to give this sub!!
