Strength:
reasonably priced, good design
Weakness:
bulky, useless music/movies bass selector It is best if the "front" is facing against the wall. You will get a much better quality "bass" than you would get if you place it normally. And it enhances the presence too. Much more powerful bass for both music and movies!!! Try it, and you will never regret... |

Strength:
Very good range for a sub this compact. Nice tight bass in the lower frequencies.
Weakness:
Above 70mhz or so the bass gets a little out control and too loose. Although it doesn't have the rediculous volume and gut-wrenching ability that the Cerwin Vega had, it had a much tighter and responsive sound fro moives and music. Since my speakers provide better controlled bass above 70mhz, I have my crossover set rigth there to take care of the careless bass above that frequency. In my small dorm room this sub is perfect. Good bass for a very good price. I would highly recommend to anyone who doesn't need the crazy volume of a bigger sub. Similar Products Used: Cerwin-Vega 15" 250w |

Strength:
Strong low end in this price class
Weakness:
higher bass notes (60hz-up) seem very distorted even at lower volumes Had been shopping around for a subwoofer to add in to my home theater, and just as the SW-150, this sub does real well as far as going low, but i keep wishing for more clarity and precision. Especially the higher bass frequencies (kick-bass) seem very distorted, very noticable when playing music. |

Strength:
Value. Good sound for the price.Versatile, simple to use.
Weakness:
Sound above 75 hz. I don't need that, so haven't experimented much with it. I purchased this sub recently at Sears on clearance for $171.00 (incl. tax).I am very happy with it for my purposes. My mains are the wonderful Phase Technology 9T's(sadly no longer available)which provide excellent bass response down to 35hz.With the crossover set at 40hz. and the volume at 2 o'clock, the transition between the 9T's and the Yst-160 is seamless. You only notice the sub when you turn the volume down and hear what is missing. To me this exemplifies good sound reinforcement with a subwoofer.I dislike anything that is overwhelming or out of balance with the whole.Using the rca inputs , all the bass seems to come from the two mains even though the sub is located 12 ft. away next to a sofa. The overall effect is very tight and musical.Balanced.As to appearance, the yamaha is a perfect match for my 9T's which stand slightly less than twice as tall, two inches wider and nearly as deep as the sub. They are covered in black cloth that matches the Yst beautifully.I have my auto sensor set to high and it is performing flawlessly with my system.I haven't tested it with too many DVD's yet, but it has done well with all to this date.As others have noted, the bass gets muddy above about 75hz.,but in all fairness it may be overkill when combined with the excellent bass output of the 9T's.I haven't experimented using the Yst-160 with smaller mains, but may do so later just for fun. very good looking I too got in at the great deal Sears had on this sub. List at cash register to $179 plus 10% off that day! I just bought the new Sony MFSS500 ($129)floor standing fronts, Sony MFSS200 rear bookshelves($65), and the Sony SS-CN495 ($85) center speaker at Etronics.com. I was on a budget, so I had to get a good deal! The Yamaha YST-SW160 works well. I have it set at 50 hz and the sound at 2 o'clock. The sub is not boomy, it just does what it is supposed to. I am sure there are better subs, but you have to look at the price. If you can afford $500 or $1000 go for it. But for this price this sub is fantastic! Similar Products Used: aiwa |

Strength:
Bass that will kick your ass, sleek look.
Weakness:
auto standby doesnt always kick in in time Bottom line, if you're putting together a mid-range system and are concerned about it's look, this is the sub to get. Enough power to piss everyone off while still sounding very nice with the volume turned low. |

Strength:
powerfull bass-output, easy to place, many controlls
Weakness:
sometimes a little bit too boomy, the music/movie-switch seems to have no effect at all, needed much time to set up this little baby! I bought this sub two weeks ago as replacement for the liitel brother YST-SW 45. The 160 really powers my system out of the house! Within playing digital sources it's very impressive how powerfull this sub does its work. Similar Products Used: none |
