Strength:
Good bass on all types of music
Weakness:
Nil I just bought the Yamaha YST-SW160 this week am I am very impressed. I have it teamed up with JMLab Profile 55 speakers and Yamaha AX-592 AMP etc. The reason I bought the YST-SW160 was to give the JMLab speakers some "grunt" and it doesn't disappoint at all. With this setup I am just blown away. I now have clear high and mid range with a wonderful, just right bass. We listen to all types of music in this house from alternative, rock, dance to classical and on all fronts I am extremely happy, a really nice subwoofer. |

Strength:
Very accurate, Excellent bass at all frequency ranges, looks and sounds excellent. All in all a great sub.
Weakness:
I need a bigger room than a bedroom and it pisses off my parents too much This is an excellent sub it took me a while too position it at first i couldn't feel it at all. Once i had it positioned porperly it sounded great. It certaimly filled in the missing link of my 5.1 home theatre system. I have tested the matrix, gone in sixty seconds, gladiator and godzilla. They all rock I just can't get over how much my system has improved. I always knew that it didn't sound the best because of the sub not being present but i never knew it would improve this much. This is a great sub and definately worth the money. I just wish I had a better reciever so i could test dts. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Good Clean Bass. Not a cube, fits in tight spots.
Weakness:
standby switch I have this subwoofer hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V800 and the bass output from the LFE is excellent. I have the volume control set a about 1/2 and the bass during Gladiator in DTS-ES was unbelievable. I would highly recommend this sub for anyone looking for good solid performing bass at an affordable price. I think some of the previous unfavorable reviews here are from people that are looking for a big boomer. This sub will satisfy and deliver plenty of bass if set up properly, what it won't do is knock the sheetrock off the walls. If thats what you want you should look elsewhere. Physical format is side-firing, Vertical stacked 8" speakers
Weakness:
None so far! I'm driving everything with a Denon 775RD receiver and a Yamaha DSP-E492 for the surround. My front speakers are DCM TF-500s dating from 1987. I got the DSP-E492 in April, 1999, during a special Yamaha promotion. It replaced an old Radio Shack surround unit with about 15 watts/channel output, but I continued to use the old 40 watt maximum speakers. Recently, while cleaning up and rearranging the listening area in the den, I decided to finally try to achieve a little quality surround rather than just have extra noise coming from the behing the viewer. I noticed the Yamaha YST-SW160 early on while checking specs and prices online. After being put off by a HiFi Buys salesman who tried to sell me a $399 Mirage, while he put down Yamaha speakers in general, I rediscovered this site. The only negative review of this sub-woofer was from the guy who smoked his, and even he liked the sound before the unit blew. The price through Netmarket was right (even Best Buy is selling this unit for $299). I received the 44 lb. speaker 4 days ago, hooked it up using the line-level input rather than speaker-level, and I'm blown away by the quality. All sub-woofers can pump bass out at high volume levels, but the one thing I wanted more than anything else was clean, audible, feelable bass at normal listening levels. The Yamaha provides that, and I'm thrilled. I almost forget it's there, until I turn it off. When the bass goes away it's immediately evident. To complete the system I've ordered, also from Netmarket, a B.I.C. DV62CLR (all positive reviews) for the center and a pair of Advent Amber bookshelf speakers, on closeout, for the rear speakers. Only time will tell if it'll all go together. Similar Products Used: DAK w/o amplifier, about 1988. Horrible. |

Strength:
having dual 8" woofers to avoid buying pair of SW45. 150W RMS. many controls. amp remains cool when in use. elegant, sleek, and expensive look. build is quite sturdy. bass hits smoothly and tight. Instruction manual is well layed out and gives perfect sense of direction.
Weakness:
Must be turned up a lot to get desired effects sometimes. For small rooms it's very big and makes hard to place. Can sound distorted at high volumes. takes some time to tweak. I haven't much to say yet on how satisfied I'am on purchasing this product. It's one of my first brand name models (which actually have quality), but it hasn't been what I thought it would be. I have heard Yamaha's SW45 and Sony's SAWM40. The SW45 was too weak for my taste, and so I looked at the Sony and Yamaha YST-SW160 <----which I never planned on buying. I heard the Sony sub and it sounded great. I never demoed the Yamaha for some unknown reason and assumed it was the better buy b'c of the 150W, dual woofers, and lowered price. After bringing it home and hearing this one it jus' doesn't seem to have that theater presence as the Sony did, nor as much power. This could be the fact that I haven't found the right spot for it yet, or it's maybe that the Sony has bettered itself this time. It is possible that I may take this one back and give the Sony a try and receive my rebate as well of $50. Similar Products Used: RCA (forgot model), AudioSource 6.5 |

Strength:
Slim design, forward firing direction, auto-on feature a plus
Weakness:
sometimes a bit boomy, though I am still tweaking it I have only had this sub a week, but it's AWESOME! My wife wants a second one to compliment this one, guess we will have to get it then. My first experience with this sub, it was connected via speaker cable to my Onkyo Receiver. I just recently (yesterday) got a new receiver that supports RCA sub outs, sounds great either way! You gotta get this one! Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Strong bass, Nice looks, Affordable price
Weakness:
None for the price range I have had the original Yamaha 150 since 95, and decided to upgrade basically my whole system. I bought a B&K st2140 Amplifier, PT3 Preamp, and Aegis Ones for the front. After reading some reviews I thought a second sub sounded logical. The sound improvement was substantial at least another 6db was gained if not more. This sub is great for an apartment dweller with not much space, the slim design makes it an easy placement in a corner and thats were they sound the best. I would highly recommend using the RCA subwoofer cable for hook-up. Originally I had them through speaker connections, they sounded good but I could tell where the sound was coming from, with the cables they dissapeared. Great sub if you use it correctly!! Strength:
Excellent frquency response, can be loud when needed, but soft as well. 150 watt amp provides lots of bass.
Weakness:
When you play music really loud, the bass seems to distort a little If you are looking for a sub, look at this one. The two eight inch woofers with the 150 watt amp provide a ton of bass. This is the perfect sub for most people. |
