Strength:

strong controlled sound
low low's

Weakness:

none so far

I just recently bought this product from etronics for $279 plus $40 for shipping and it was well worth it. I was hesitant on the sw-800 but figured try this one first and if not good enough move up to more amp. Well in my 1350sqft town home it shakes the walls very nicely :)
Has really controlled sound not mushy like my prior klipsch sub had! I cant wait till this is broken in to see what she really has. Note that this is only 250watt and its current gain setting is only half way up. Definitly check out this sub before going with anouther brand!

Strength:

Powerful, clean bass for HT. Attractive looking and small footprint.

Weakness:

Not really good for music.

For a 10 incher, this sub really pounds out a lot of bass. My previous two subs had a 12 inch woofer and I was at first concerned about the smaller driver of the Yamaha. But after reading the reviews I decided to give it a try since there is no risk purchasing from Crutchfield. The Yamaha's 250 watt amp does make a difference. The bass output is very strong and clean on HT. Although I am still experimenting, a volume setting of half-way seems to be ample enough.Like the fact that the power on/off button, volume, and frequency controls are all on the front. The bass switch is on the rear along with the phase control. I do not use the auto on feature.Even with the bass switch set for music, I do not like this subs' music performance. The bass is much too boomy and if I lower the subs' level then I do not get any more bass than my main speakers provide with the sub turned off. This is my opinion and might have something to do with the fact that I have absolutely no flexibility in where I have this sub placed in my listening room.Anyway, I did not purchase this sub for music and for HT it really does rock!

Strength:

compact size, clean bass, handy controls

Weakness:

AutoDetect doesn't always kick in at low volumes; is not a "pretty" speaker...stands out from rest of furniture.

Excellent sub for the money. Have only had it for one week so can't discuss the fine nuances. Had to return the main driver on my Klipsch SW-12 because of loud vibration. Hope the 5 year warranty works...speaker is 4 yrs 10 mos old. My audiophile expert where I bought the sub recommended the SW320 over the SW160. Said it kicks ass over the SW160. For $50 more, I took his advice. Didn't notice much difference in the rear movie/music control.

Haven't found any.... yet!

Very nice sub... I highly recommend it... IMO almost Velodine Servo controlled type sub performance for a fraction of the price.

Great output & accurate sound... expect to spend a bit of time tweeking the crossover of the sub to complement your main speakers.

Extremely efficient in small rooms, don't be fooled by its size...

For $400 I thought it was a bit pricey for a 10"... but it's performance will convince you otherwise

WARNING!!!!!!!
if you cant handle loud bass with verry low frequency's
( 20 hZ ) if you think this sub has to much power for you then buy a Klipsch KSW-12

The Yamaha 320 is a powerhouse of a Sub. I bought a pair of subs from J&R Music World. One was YST-SW 160 150W 2X8” front firing drivers, and the other a YST-SW 320 250W 1X10” down firing driver. The 160 got to me first and I installed it in my HT system. I liked the new bass and presence of low bass it gave me much better ambience them I had without it. For $220.00 a good buy. The next day the 320 was at the door, and the whole story changed. I replaced the 160 with the 320 and the difference was enormous. The 320 with its 250W amp and 10” driver just blew the socks off the 160 and its 150W amp driving a pair of 8”. I had only paid $40.00 more for the 320 and it was worth every penny. The bass is smooth and clear, and the punch is hard. Not something you see in a sub $300.00 unit. Normally you get one or the other. As for volume level I have it in an 800 sq/ft room and can only stand 45% setting on the volume control. I have found that 25% is just right. I have moved the YST-SW 160 to the garage (it’s a nice garage) and use it there. If you have the choice between the two, save another $40.00 and get the YST-SW 320 period!

Strength:

Price, build quality, power, controls on the front

Weakness:

Sound 'out of the box', musical ability.

I've had it for about a week, and after initial disappointment from the sound when straight out of the box, it's now starting to impress. Wired at line level using the Monster THX spec. cable from my Pioneer Elite VSX 26-TX receiver, I was initially taken aback by the lack of depth and inability to go below 30Hz without a significant dB drop off. After all, I'm using a 'THX Ultra' DVD player, receiver and cable, yet the bass seemed, for lack of a better word, cheap. I had purchased this unit because it was spec'd at going down to 20Hz, something unheard of unless you drop $1k on a M&K, Sunfire, etc, etc. After having the KLH (I paid less than $75 for it) modified to give me about 27Hz, it felt like my latest 'upgrade' was actually a step back.

So I moved the unit around the room, wired it at speaker level using one of the power amps I use to bi-amp my front channels, changed the crossover settings on the receiver and sub and slowly it started to sound more like the sub I was expecting. Having re-arranged the furniture to set the unit in the corner, something I couldn't do with the KLH as it would sound way too muddy - everything clicked and all of a sudden - BOOM!!!. I witnessed the birth of a 20Hz mini-monster...

With a little more tweaking, and reverting back to the line level cable, I'm now thrilled with my purchase. On the T2 Ultimate edition DVD, the DTS & THX promos at the beginning of the film are incredible. The punch it gives out is something else.

The final tweak was to position the sub at a 45 degree angle to the wall. Because of the design of the sub, and the quadropoloe 'thingymajig' output at it's base, the sound waves now reflect of two walls from three of the vents at the base of the unit. Because the driver is within 1/8 of a wavelength at 80Hz ( 53cm ) the sound does not cancel itself out as it remains 'in-phase'. For more info on this principal I urge you to visit http://www.sonicdesign.se/subplace.html , which is an excellent article on the do's and don'ts of sub set up.

The only downside so far, is the subs musical ability, which at this price point is not too big a disappointment. The note and tone that it produces cannot compete with my regular two front channels, even though it can go deeper. I have a pair of Arcam Alpha 8's bi-amping a pair of Mission 752 Freedoms. Even though they 'bottom-out' at around 40 Hz, the sub struggles to give the same warmth and quality that I get from this arrangement. Perhaps it's no surprise when you think that the sub cost me $260 and the Missions, Arcams, interconnects and speaker cable cost nearly ten times that. I spend 80% of my time in front of my system watching TV or DVD's, so when it comes to music I adjust the settings on my receiver to take the sub out of the equation. A small price to pay for the enjoyment it gives me during that 80%...

This review has dragged out a little longer than I thought it would, so in-short ; Give it a few days to break in, put it in a corner at an obtuse angle, spend time messing around with the crossovers and if you have a fairly good two channel set-up - experiment with it - but I'd suggest that you don't rely on the sub for music. Great piece of equipment that, at $260, is a genuine home theater steal.
