Strength:

Deep, tight, low and lingering bass totally incredible!!!
Best deal in the Price for Performance category. Actually even surpassing high end and expensive products in the market.

Weakness:

Back switch for audio and video should've been in front.

After years of waiting and looking for the right subwoofer, Yamaha has finally come up with the perfect one. They seemed to do it when they introduced Surround and DSP, considering the fact that they're known for their presence in all major and minor concert and events worldwide. This time their amps and receivers are reeping awards and success by bringing to our homes the authentic theater and concert atmosphere and realism one would like to experience. So this Sub of theirs is another milestone for them.Listening to music in the sub's music mode seemed to be very tight and distinct. Switching to the movie mode was even more exciting coz the bass went really low to 18 Hz. and made the bass and tremors linger in all corners of the house making me wonder if the person who did the review before me had his setup correct when he said he couldn't appreciate anything below 25 Hz. Please check your system!!! I got meters and they did hit the correct specs!!!I hope other magazine's like Hometheater, Sound and Vision or Stereophile would also make a review of this product and finally vindicate it.
It's a good thing you have site's like these, very balanced.
Congratulations!!!

So Overall If you're looking for an excellent sub I suggest that you look no more coz Yamaha finally did it as I said this unit beats all other subs in the market in the Price for Performance category even going beyond and beating high end expensive products.

Nice looking and compact, dynamic bass that will shake your room when called for.

Weakness:

This sub is quite a step-up for Yamaha. They have finally come up with a real killer here! After watching many of my DVDS' over again I am thrilled with this product. Deep, powerful, fast. What else would you want in a sub?(great with music also)

Strength:

You could have a small disco in your livingroom.

Weakness:

Portnoises at about 25-30hertz when playing at mediumhigh volume. Not for Bach organmusic

First of all i would like to say a few words about what it doesn't do.
First: It does NOT play as low as specified by Yamaha, not even close. If i want to be nice i could say it plays down to 25Hertz but under that it's stonedead.
Second: It is NOT a "Sunfire killer" because of the specified 18 hertz capacity and 800watt amp. My coment to that is AAHHAHAHAHAHA HOHO aso..

So the sub is all bad then? Nope! It's a desent sub but no "killer". I listen to all kinds of music and watch alot of dvd's with plenty of meaty base. I could recomend this sub to those who want's a fairly musical sub for popmusic and want's that little extra push in the 30-90hertz for their homecinema. That's the reason i bought it. It have the ability to give a little bit extra sound pressure because of the 4inch stroke speaker and the 800W amp. The sub weights about 27 kilo and i managed it to jump away when i played some realy loud popmusic with a heavy beat (666 bomba). So for those who want's a sub that can play beneath 25 hertz and/or want's it to be higly musical, look at Atlantic technologys subwoofers(great for both music and HT but ofcourse cost more) or Dali (music). For the rest of you, you probably think it's an ok subwoofer that can play quite loud.

Strength:

This sub sounded reallly good at the first dealer after i had been listening to some crappy 8 inch jobs.

Weakness:

Sounded pathetic after listening to the cheaper Mirage frx 12 and the m&k 12 inch 75 watter

I have to tell u guys that after listening to all three above subs, the yamaha is easily the worst. If any of u guys are considering buying this sub, please do yourself a favour and listen to the m&k and the mirage. While the yamaha produces a low level rumble, these other two subs encompass you in pure bass. And dont believe 800watts rms, i can tell you the the 75rms from the m&k is easily more. By the way, when comparing against my uncles expensive 'audiophile subs', which he has got 2 of and and cost in excess of 1500 each, we found that the mirage seemed had a better rumble, if not quite as tight.

Easy to match and look good

Weakness:

Need careful fine tuning

I gain back the thing that I have missed , i.e. the punch and full body of the bass that below 90hz since I am using a beautifully sound Minipod.

Really value for money. Highly recommanded.

My system:

CD: Sony SACD1

Strength:

1 kW amp, 4 in. voice coil, fantastic construction. LOUD!

Weakness:

for under $500? Nothing is weak about it!

I ordered the sub from etronics and waited for the sub to be delivered like a kid waiting for santa: tossing and turning at night, dreaming about how much better life would be with this toy. Finally UPS shows up and the box has a huge rip in 1 corner that actually damged the styro in the box, but the sub was totally unharmed. Take note though, if you order from etronics and the goods are damaged, you are responsible for paying the return shipping. Etronics just slaps a waybill on the oem packaging. Anyway, I was a bit dismayed at the small size of he box. But in this case, great things come in small packages. I hooked it up to my sony str-de945 receiver's sub-out port with "gold" radio shack connectors and "y" adapter. Bottom line: unless you are in some 25,000 sq foot mansion, this thing packs a punch your neighbors are sure to feel. I tried some bass-heavy selections to puch the sub to its limits. Chemical brothers "under the influence" track has a huge bassline at the beginning and aside from the sub dimming the lamp in my room, it ate it up. I tried 2PAC's greatest hits, no problem. Home theater you ask? Well, I lugged the unit over to my friends place; he has the same receiver and a whole 5.1 Cerwin-V. setup, including the big lw-15 powered sub. My Yamaha not only hung in with the big guy, she even exceeded it. Unreal. We tried the "rebel camp" scene from Predator and the Yamaha shook the place harder than the 15! And with both subs connected, whew! Awesome! This sub rocks, it will make your friends jealous, and it will please bass fanatics like me. #1 for bang for buck factor, and that 10" driver throws out deep bass with aplomb. Ignore the reviews by crazy Europeans who poo-poo this unit and claim it's only 800 watts. Go to yamah.com and see for yourself, this thing is 1,000 watts! Don't go by the model # you dumb europeans! P.S. - I saw some reviews that said the manual sucks. I think it must be updated because the intructions are detailed regarding sub placement, and how to avoid standing waves that cancel out the bass. It also includes a detailed description of how the sub works. FIVE STARS!!!!

Strength:

Incredible Bass response. It sounds great!

Weakness:

Home Theater/Audio switch is poorly located. No RCA out to connect another sub.

Well, I'm no audiophile but I did listen to a LOT of ~$500 subs at Circuit City and Best Buy before I purchased this instead - having never heard it before - based on the reviews here and the fact that I already have a Yamaha system and speakers.

Wow. It is a great buy for the money. I almost went with an SVS speaker, but this was easier and about $200 less (just to get into their base model). I am pleased with the purchase.

I am concerned about one thing. My sub had a piece of masking tape with the words "Air Leak" written on it, taped to the bottom of the sub on one side. I checked the box carefully and there is nothing to indicate that it is a refurbished unit and there is a gold seal on the box that says it has met all of Yamaha's standards of excellence, etc... Nothing about being refurbished though.

I have checked around the box and cannot feel any leaks and the speaker sounds superb. So maybe that is a part of the assembly/testing process, and they forgot to remove the tape after it was finished and the leak was sealed?

Again, I can see NO sign of repackaging.

I'll report back if I have any problems.

Weakness:

Pity is not a 15"

Well, this is one of those things that must be said about this unit. It is simply great. This baby "big-brother" YST 800 makes a lot of noise and it sound good to.

I am getting another one, just to see what kind of desible reading I can get from them both. One is more than a enough and for the price it is a winner.

This sub, which plays in a access of 800Watts RMS will outperform and I can prove this, any sub twise it price.

This unit brings movement to a movie and rithem to a audio CD. This is a must have, even with big systems. Uncle Lucas can give this one a THX Select rating at least.

Great GREAT GREAT
