Strength:

Low Price, power, massive bass

Weakness:

A little port noise at high-volume

I just bought this peace of art 3 weeks ago. I have a relatively small room ( about 15 m² ) with absolutely no accoustic at all. Eventhough, the speaker really sounds fantastic. Even when using my old subwoofer ( B&W ASW1000 ) together with the Yamaha, you can hardly hear the B&W anymore at high levels. It's very difficult to compare both subbwoofers since the design is completely different. However, from a price point of view, the Yamaha Sw-800 is definately the one I would recommand to anyone who wants a powerfull subwoofer for a low-price.
Also the power of the Yamaha ( 600 watts ) compared to the B&W ( 120 watts ) is a huge difference.

I tested him with Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2 on DVD and it really is excellent sound, even when putting the volume up he keeps performing very well without disortion where as the B&W can't keep up at high-volumes even considering that the B&W has a 12" woofer.

The only minus is the little port-noise when you really put the speaker to the limit but believe me, pushing him so far is really not necessary unless you want to cause yourself permanent ear dammage :-)

The only subwoofer I heard in the store that still sounded better was the KEF TDM-45, but he's THX certified and costs much more.

Used system: Yamaha Rx-v795 Dolby digital amplifier with 4x B&W 603 speakers, ASW-1000 and Yamaha YST-SW800 subwoofers.

Strength:

Very deep clear bass and alot of it.

Weakness:

a little bit of port noise at the right level.

This sub brings out bass in my music that I never even knew exsisted. In movies it makes exposions and even a simple door shutting life like. It has one feature that I've never seen on any other sub, a bass switch for movies and music, it seems to work very well too. This sub puts out -alot- of bass, I was one to belive that there's no such thing as "too much bass", but I find myself turning it down quite often. I had to move one of my floor lamps across the room it was rattling it so much. the sound isn't just powerful but extremly clear, and seems to never distort. Although, if you have it very loud on very low frequencies you may get a little bit of port noise, nothing big though. It only does it on one of the songs i play and at very high volume, it's never done it to me during movies. Over all this is a crisp, clear, loud, good-looking, and rather affordable subwoofer made by a brand that i definatly trust, if you don't have a subwoofer and are lookin for some good bass, do yourself a favor and check into this one.

This is a very fine sub. You cannot buy a sub this good for this amount of money. You would have to spend 2K or more to get better. It is very powerful and has tremdous Slam. I can only turn it up half way before my whole room sound seems like it will come apart. I know what good sound is, because I own Krell and NHT 3.3's. I do not use a sub for music nor do I need to. I bi-amp my speakers and do not use the woofers on them, when watching movies. Infact, I use a Onkyo 70 pro for movie watching. I am an aduiophile first. Home Theater is not a big deal for me as you can see. That is why I used a Keenwood and it work really well in my room, even better than a Defintive Tech 1500 sub. I bought the Yamaha because I did not want to spend a lot of money for a sub, but am ready to upgrade my receiver, nor do I think it is necessary for movies. I can apprectiate a good sub, like sunfire, Velodyne and others, but let me tell you, Yamaha has made a killer sub that can hang with these boys. You will not find a better sub nowhere near this price.

Strength:

Very powerful sound for home theater, but also works great for music.

I have been putting off buying a sub for a while. Most of the ones that have put out enough quality bass for my taste have been quite large. I've heard some of Yamaha's older subs and was quite impressed with the somewhat powerful sound from small enclosures. But I needed more. Then came the YST-SW800. Relatively small enclosure, 1000 watts, and 18Hz extension.

I checked out a few websites and found a great price. After a month of use, I must admit that this sub GREAT. It puts out just as much bass as the Definitive Technology sub that I almost bought. But the major difference is that the Yamaha works much better for music. The upright bass lines in my jazz collection don't sound boomy at all. After listening to a few DVD's, I was totally blown away. Explosions made my apartment shake, thunderstorms made me look out the window making sure it wasn't real.

This sub takes a little time getting thing adjusted correctly to get the best sound. I found that by adjusting the phase to reverse, the volume to 4, and the crossover maxed out (around 140hz...I have all of the speakers set to SMALL on my A/V reciever with the LFE set to subwoofer only). All frequencies below 80Hz go to the sub, and the rest go to the speakers.

I would highly recommend this sub to anyone looking for an affordable subwoofer. This definitely sounds better than any sub I have heard for less than $1500.

Just recieved this sub and im more than impressed. I did not expect such performance from a 10 incher after listening to many 12 and 15 inchers in my home! I find this sub plays VERY clean and tight...NOT boomy what- so- ever. It goes deep and loud when called for and recovers instantly. For thoughs who seek a balanced performer look no further..Yamaha has made one killer sub!

Weakness:

port noise?

This sub puts out an incredible amount of low bass. Esspecially for a 10". No doubt a credit to the 4 inch voice coil, massive excursion, and power reserve. This is an excellent sub, not even considering the price point. It provides a very clean, tight, and full low end for music and home theater use. However there is one small gripe I have with this sub. At highier volume levels during certian songs and audio effects, I've noticed a fair amount of port noise. Of couse I expect port noise to some extent from most ported sub enclosures at certain frequencies during highier volume playback. However, it is usually covered up by the rest of the music. I'm curious whether anybody else has noticed this? I would appreciate any comments. Anyway, if your considering buying this sub, don't let the port noise stop you. For the 2% of the time that it is noticeable it can be solved by turning the volume down or repositioning the sub with the port facing a different direction. You will not be dissappointed with this sub.

Awesome subwoofer. Returned the SW160 after 2 weeks. Can't compare the two. Initially I considered getting another SW160 to supplement the first which was lacking in the deep base department. Nothing in my house shook with the SW160. When pushed the 160 sounded distorted. Good thing I came across these reviews. I quickly ordered the SW800 (couldn't find one at a nearby store). First movie I played was JP the Lost World. The seen where the T-rex was approaching while everybody was asleep was incredible. It was barely audible but my house was shaking. Everybody came out to the living room to find out what was going on. This was with the power setting of little more than half way. Still haven't pushed the woofer to its limit. Don't think I'll ever find out either with the family around.
