Strength:

1000 watt amp. Very solid quality construction.

Weakness:

Poor manual.

This is an excellent sub! It provides PLENTY of solid low bass without strain. The response is very smooth and the bass transistions very well between the sub and the mains. The nice thing about this sub is the seemingly endless headroom. When the source material demands a high level of bass the sub pounds it out cleanly. CDs with light bass sound tight and punchy while CDs that are very heavy on the bass are reproduced effortlessly. DVDs sound incredible! Movies like The Haunting DTS and U571 DTS produce unreal amounts of very low bass at the limits of this sub. The manual could be much better. Setting up a sub properly is a very complex thing to do and the manual could go much more in-depth on setup and also could give more specifications as well. But the sub is a top notch quality unit. The construction is very stout and the fit and finish is superb. The looks of this sub is what first got me interested and I am very happy with the performance as well.

Strength:

Quality Sub that should cost much more compared to its competition..powerful and compact.

Weakness:

None at all

This sub is wonderful. This sub has the ability to drop to 18 hz(did home test) and never runs out of steam. The quality of its build speaks for itself..1 inch cabinet construction..4 inch voice coil..great control over the driver with Yamaha's new servo tech and its new 1000 watt amp...With music and movies...AWESOME! Can i give it a 6?

Strength:

Weakness:

I tested the YST-SW320 at home and i liked it too but when i hooked this baby up i was impressed:-) 1kw of power, this is awesome, even if i have a small room (approximately 17m2). I recommend this sub to anyone who is interested in good, deep and powerful bass.

Strength:

Small Size, Front controls, 1000w amp, Smooth bass

Weakness:

none yet

I have tried several subs and couldnt find anything that pleased me under $750 to go along with my bose am-5 yamaha nsa 690, carver pwr amp, carver pre-amp for quite some time and needless to say there was nothing out there; untill I ran upon the sw800. I have to say I was quite impressed by its bass response and punch for a sub$500 unit. I have driven it very hard and it has yet to let me down, on movies the bass it reproduces is devastating. On music that is of quality recording it is also equally impressive. Metallica with the San Fran symphony is also devastating with this sub, wall shaking is the word. I would recommend this sub to anyone looking for something for under $500 shoot lets make that anything under $1000! Buy it you will not be dissapointed.

Strength:

Power, smooth, appearance

Weakness:

Unwanted noises when the volume is set med-high. The unit moves when at high volume (during one strech it moved almost a metre for its original position)

I bought a Yamaha Home theate setup and was completely disappointed by the subwoofer that came with it. So I decided to puchase this thing. When I first hooked it up I was somewhat disappointed. Once I set it up properly, it started working just fine.

I played independance day and holy! the bed upstairs was shaking up and down.

In summary, I am quite impressed and the thing does what I want. Ideally I'd have liked the sound to be cleaner during higher volume settings, but alas.

I would recommend it to anyone.

Strength:

Great bass on HT & music. Best bang for the buck (by far). Ability to deactivate auto signal-sense power on.

Weakness:

Switch on rear for Video/Music. Would be nice on front, & a little sturdier at that. Only a 2 year warranty.

So why am I feeling like I should have paid at least $1500 for this sub? Yamaha finally got it right, & in a BIG way. My M&K MX-125 has been in the shop since January (warranty work), & I couldn't wait this long, so I picked up this sub in the meantime. Well, not only has this thing far exceeded my expectations, but the M&K can take it's sweet time coming back (what good is a 5/10 amp/speaker warranty if there is only one M&K tech who's 6-8 weeks behind?). The SW800 sits in the same spot on my floor, much shorter, smaller footprint than the M&K, but manages to pump out tight & deep bass (some lower freq heard for the first time) on my recordings. I look over & can't believe this box is actually performing like this. The M&K was slower & muddier, & can't approach this Yamaha for HT. This sub is approx the same dimensions as the first sub Yamaha made in the early '80s. That one also had a single down-firing 10" driver, a 35 watt amp, one control for level, & weighed about 1/4th of this SW800. It was well worth the wait.
