Strength:

picture quality, price, dealer convergence included

Weakness:

None, so far...maybe the lack of 720 format.

This is a review of the WS-55807 model. I originally intende to purchase this unit from Sears, but when I asked the salesman about setup and convergence, he informed that I would have to buy the $299 extended warranty for that service. So much for Sears. I then went to two local electronics stores and compared price, delivery, and set up. Since convergence was important service to me, I selected Audio Visions, whose owner threw in service, delivery, and no extra warranty was needed. Now, all I had to do was call him up when my basement was ready for the HDTV. The 55 was delivered, connected, convergence was done, and WOW, I was in a different world! I have cable and Dish satelite, so I emmidiately started my enjoyment, and variety. As many of you have said, this TV shows all the shortcommings of cable TV, but my satelite picture is great. I will be purchasing Dish's HD receiver in a few weeks, and I can't wait...super bowl in HD. Love it. Great TV, and don't forget the Mitsubishi "Promise".
One thing I hate, and has nothing to do with the TV, is the anamorphic garbage out of Hollywood. This TV was made for DVD watching, so thank goodness that with the 55807 you can fill the screen with 99% of the formats available.
Finally, some of you have complained about cheap speakers, and things "taped". I have asked around, and found out that there are quite a few units out there that are being sold as new, but in reality, are "refurbished". Make sure your unit comes to the door unopened, and ask about exchange policy.

Strength:

Excellent picture clarity when viewing DVD's. 16:9 widescreen format is terrific.

Weakness:

Cable is not that great. I'm considering purchasing the DVDO line doubler...in the process of learning more about it.

I recently purchased the WS 55807 along with the Toshiba 6200 DVD. The family and I enjoy watching movies over the weekend in our basement so I decided to upgrade. After several weeks of review I decided upon these two components and I'm very pleased. The picture clarity of the DVD's we rent is outstanding. I'm not necessarily a videofile but I appreciate good electronic equipment. I don't think you can go wrong with this combination for viewing DVD's. I'm not sure when or if I plan to purchase and HD tuner etc...but I thought is was important to purchase a projection TV with this option in the event I wish to later

The blue gun is too strong

This is a GREAT set. Ironically, the 1st week was the worst - I was disatisfied with the picture. I then had the Mitsu techs come in and do some adjustments. Things improved.

I rented the 'Video Essentials' DVD and adjusted it some more. Things imporoed considerably. I bought the AVIA DVD from Ovation. Things REALLY improved. At this point I was more than happy with the investment ($3,995). I initially ran it via component outputs from a panasonic A-120 dvd. I switched to s-vhs so I could place the dvd farther from the tv and did not notice a big change in quality so I left it that way.

I WISH someone out there in Internet land would share the service codes for this unit (I was told Menu-1370 gies you access to the basic menus but it does not work in my unit).

The sound of the built-in speakers is good but bnot spectacular. The individual video settings for each input are a godsend. the set offers the option of up-converting signals to either 480p or 960i. I see only a slight difference between the two, and 480p looks better to me.

Convergence holds pretty good and there are 64 conv points. The only problem is the blue, which is over-enphasized (so the tv cannot be fully conerged - but it still looks great).

All in all a good buy, IMHO.

Okay, now that i finally purchased the RCA dtc 100 stb,(couldn't wait until april roll out of the hd 500 stb w/direct TV). I have finally been able to see for myself what this hdtv can do. The picture is so realistic it's like looking out your window, is the only way i can describe it. ( now this is watching ota broadcast with rooftop antenna. I also purchased the toshiba 5109 progressive scan Dvd player and hooked it up through progressive outs on tv and picture is almost 3 dimensional.I am so happy with this set right now, to think i almost considered returning it for the 4.3 standard hdtv.

Strength:

-The setup is easy and well laid out. The convergence is in the setup (as opposed to in the service menu) so it's easy to get to.
-Assignable inputs. You can turn off the input(s) not in use. Great when scrolling between inputs.
-Different picture settings for each input. This is a biggie! It takes a long time to set everything up for each input, but once it's done, boy is it great. No switching modes when playing a DVD or DSS. Of course those with a pronto might not care.
-No SVM on any input.
-Plenty of inputs, including RGB+sync and component video.
-16x9 aspect ratio. I am converted and will not go back to a 4x3 set. It's absolutely fantastic, though it did take some adjustment time.

Weakness:

-The main thing I don't like on this set is the remote control angles. You have to virtually point the remote directly at the set for it to work. This is very much a pain when you're used to being able to point the remote any where in the room and have it work (as on my previous 53XBR200).
-The remote itself is not laid out particularly well. The menu button is on the bottom right of the grid and the enter button is at the top left. Intuitively the enter button should be on the bottom right. This can cause problems when in the menu...you think you're hitting enter but instead you're hitting menu. There is a lack of an enter button on the remote keypad (main number grid). So when you choose channel 6, you have to either hit 006 or hit 6 and wait 3 seconds before it changes automatically. These problems can be overcome with a universal remote. Once set up properly, I never use the original remote anyhow.
-A convergence reset button in the setup. This should be in the service menu. It's too easy for someone n the family to throw off the convergence by accident.
-The green power light it a bit too bright. It can be distracting in low light settings. I covered it with a small piece of electrical tape. Would like to put some type of tint on it so I can still tell when the set is on.

As far as the picture goes, I have not begun to tap the limits of what this set is capable of doing. Initially the convergence was way off, contrast at it's max and a lot of red push. So far I have adjusted the convergence, calibrated with VE and reduced the sub contrast and red push via the service menu. At least I tried. I accidentally reset the convergence...damn I hate that....So I have been tweaking that over again. I have found some slight jagged edges when a dark image is portrayed against a white background. They are slight and not often, but they di happen. There are also times when there are red outlines of flesh tones. I noticed this mostly in ANTZ but also saw it in Double Jeopardy. This does not often occur and you have to look critically. It's not the convergence because that's dead on. I believe it's some other internal settings that any ISF tech can fix. In fact, I already helped it some by what I did in the service menu.

I have cable, DSS and a standard DVD player. What I can say is the set really shows the imperfections of cable. Very grainy. DSS is better. I am not using the noise reduction on any input because I feel the picture looks too soft with it on. Maybe with some more tweaks I may find a use for it for cable. I found on my previous Sony XBR, the DRC did a good job on cable, but really hurt DSS and to a degree DVD. It made the picture way too soft. So it's nice to see a crisper image. DVD playback with an anamorphic DVD is just, well, awsome. And I don't even own a progressive player. My wife even commented on how movie like the picture looked. I was blown away. Colors are deep and rich. There is a slight amount of depth to the picture. Not one complaint here. Overall, I am very impressed with what this set has provided me, especially for the money. I highly recommend it. The overall rating is 4.5 (but gave it a 4 to be fair since it's not perfect and we can't select half intervals).

Strength:

Excellent DVD viewing

Weakness:

Cable TV viewing is not great, no numbered levels for video control settings. If you lose settings, hard to remember where the levels were.

THis is actually a review for the 55807 2001 model.

I have AT&T "Digital" Cable. Garbage. Doesn't even have S-Video output! The picture is not great at all with this. I'm praying I can get a satellite signal so I can get some HDTV.

I have only had the set for a few days, but it is pretty nice if all I want to watch is DVD for now. Waiting for the Mits digital sat to come out.

It's worth the extra $$ to buy at a reputable dealer like I did. You can get it cheaper at BrandSmart etc. but you won't get the service and they won't calibrate when they deliver.

To be fair, I am submitting this second review with a 5 rating. My previous rating was a 4. The two combined give it a 4.5 which is the true rating I feel this tv deserves. Each day I am more impressed by it.

Great Monitor, No built in HDD decoder or expensive audio.

Weakness:

No 780p

My home theater consists of Mits WS55805, Toshiba 5109 DVD, Yamaha 2092 Receiver, Definitive 2000 speakers (full home theater setup), 4DTV (C-band satellite receiver), HDD200 HD decoder and monster cable wiring. I would agree with the other reviews on the 5109 - (one of the reason I selected it - thanks guys). I would like to add that it replaced a Pioneer 414 (good unit) and not only was the picture great but CD sound quality was decent (not audophile).
The reason to add this review was the HDD200. An HDD200 is a HDTV decoder (C-band satellite ) which works with a 4DTV receiver. I have seen reviews that stated "could not tell much difference between 5109 DVD and HDTV", let me assure you that depending on source, it just ain't close. HBO and SHOWTIME channels have been mostly decent, in spite of all the wining about some being pan&scan (true) some are also wide screen and on SHOWTIME the DIGITAL light on the Yamaha has come on, indicating 5.1. Movies like SPHERE (awesome),
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (not my kind of movie but beautiful), STARSHIP TROOPERS (real hoot) and others. The interesting part was that it was like you were watching a different movie (had seen them all before). The detail brought so many things to life. Other movies were about the same as a progressive scan DVD (most likely 480p format).
In conclusion my requirements;
Did not want to pay for an expensive sound system in the TV that could never compete with my exsisting system.
Did not want to pay for built in decoder - may want to swap things around.
Did not want to pay for fancy cabinet.
Wanted an excellent picture -
This set was perfect for me. I have been told this set is being discontinued and the prices are good if you can find one. If these are close to your requirements - this also may be the set for you and the time may be right.

no 720p and anamorphic lock in progressive mode

This set has a great picture I feel it is an improvement over the 46805 slightly. But I am not sure my 46805 was working correctly so who knows. This set is just about the right size for a smaller room.I felt the 46805 was a little small but this set seems to "feel" better in the room. For $2800 it was a great deal for a brand new unit.Anyone thinking about this set or a newer one should go to hometheaterspot.com and go to the mitsubishi section. They have a new review of the new models, which is'nt all good news.Any questions e-mail me at hdtv00@home.com This is really a great set.I use it for computer monitor and have the dreamcast hooked up via VGA box and BNC adapter to the RGBHV input and my GOD it looks good.Enjoy!!

Awesome anamorphic picture! Good remote and setup.

Weakness:

no 720p, can't adjust in progressive mode, shows how truly bad VHS is, I have purchased a S/VHS machine to help.

When the TV was first setup we noticed the convergence wouldn't adjust. They had to order a new one, the second TV was fine. I love progressive scan except for the lack of adjustment in this mode. I also noticed how awful VHS looks on this TV, an S/VHS player fixed that problem. Overall I'm very happy with this TV. It's performance is very good with DVD's, what can I say about Letter Box, it stinks (the bars are just too big, and zoom distortes too much) on any TV, and anamorphic looks fantastic! I'm hoping to have many good years with this TV.
