Strength:

good picture aside from the slight verticle defect.

Weakness:

reliability is doubtful given that Toshiba is obviously willing to sell a defective product.

I bought mine about a year ago and 3 or 4 times had it shut off and then pop back on again after a few seconds. It was load popping noise and my wife said that when it happened to her she smelt something burning. I also have a faint grey band running vertically down the screen. It is really noticeable on a blank screen or music channel. I get it on form all sources. The Toshiba service people here worked on the popping problem twice and it has not happened for several months. They took it to their shop for the band and claimed they couldn''t see it. I have my doubts about this TV lasting very long. I think Toshiba should recall them and or replace them.

Strength:

Striking picture when fed by a progressive dvd player (jvc). OK picture on cable.

Weakness:

This tv is awesome. It has a much better picture than I expected having read other reviews prior to purchasing. I am experiencing one problem however. On several occasions lately, the unit flickers(shuts down) and the screen goes blank for a second and then returns to normal. If anyone has experienced this problem, or can offer a solution, please e-mail me at jcollier@nbnet.nb.ca Thanks. Toshiba is aware of the problem.I must give a 4 star reting because of this one problem.

Strength:

the price and the picture quality

Weakness:

I exprienced 4 times that TV goes off for a couple seconds then comes back on (FLICKERS), as exprienced by several other people (see for example the recent review from Donna).
I called the service. They came to exam the TV and did not find any problem.
I believe the probelem is the systemitic defect of the model, not individual cases.

Strength:

This would be a great buy, however, there is a problem.

Weakness:

The TV goes off for a couple seconds then comes back on (FLICKERS). I am calling the service people next week. I can not recommend a TV that has a flaw in it. If I do not get this one fixed then I want a TV that works. I was watching something important and it just turned off and on again on it's own. People get a TV that doesn't have problems. I can not recommend it. Look for a better product.

I am very unhappy with a product that flickers. I read another review that say's toshiba knows about the problem. I wrote this guy today to see what toshiba or the service people did to fix the problem. I liked the TV but its frustrating to have the TV turn off for no reason. The company should not sale products that have problems. If its not fix then I will not pay for it.

Strength:

Incredible picture quality and excellent viewing angle. Numerous input options including ColorStream Component Video. Value for Price.

Weakness:

Occasional artifacts. Factory picture preferences.

I've had this TV since April 2001. The picture quality is just amazing. I was rather leary of RPTV, given their history of poor viewing angles and picture quality. After spending way way way too much time researching these TVs (Sony, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Pioneer, Panasonic, Philips, etc.) it was apparent that for around $2,000 the Toshiba was the overall winner. At 1,280 scan lines, HDTV (1080i) compatible, nearly 180 degree viewing angle, 6-element HD lens system, and SRS surround sound...its a tremendous value today and its ready for future HDTV formating. I bought mine at www.continentaltrade.com for $2050...with free shipping and no tax!

I have it set-up in a room that my viewing distance is about 8 feet. Its like being at the movies. I have digital cable (Time Warner) where the lower stations are analog and the upper stations are digital (i.e. HBO). Analog stations are just OK (older broadcasts stink) but the digital feeds (i.e. HBO, pay-per-view)are sharp, vibrant, and eye-popping on this TV!

The TV comes on casters, so moving it around is not that difficult, say if your kids lose a toy under it.

In really dark rooms, I'd suggest putting a light behind it to reduce eye strain, because the brightness/intensity on this set is awesome. Go to HomeDepot and get a single bulb, natural light, florescent strip lamp ($25). You should place it behind the TV facing up. It will make a big difference.

I'm disappointed with the factory picture presets. Toshiba should abandon these and allow us to customize at least three settings instead of just one. The remote is OK, but doesn't "learn" from other remotes.

Finally the TV has the ability to transform the built-in speakers into just the center channel, so no need to buy an extra center speaker for your surround sound set-up. Just connect your receiver's "center" channel to the TV and throw the switch on the back of the TV...its that easy.

Overall...it exceeded my entire family's expectations.

Strength:

Awesome picture with a DVD 480p signal. Analog cable is better than I expected.
Loaded with lots of features.
Great value.
Direct input selection from remote.
Improved backlit remote.
Picture settings can be stored for individual inputs.
Toshiba quality and reliability.
Solidly built cabinet. Moves easily.

Weakness:

Too large to move in tight places. It would be convenient if it could be separated into two smaller units.
Large on-screen menu interferes with picture adjustment. It would be a nice feature if it could be minimized at times.

I purchased this model November 2000. After delivery I turned it on and it worked 100% with a good picture right out of the box. No fuss or hassle-as it should be. But of course I tweaked it a bit without really needing the manual, so it's easy to use.

I was strongly considering buying the TN55X81 model for it's great picture and reasonable price for months before this but was bothered by the nagging problem of slow video input cycling and so-so remote. I heard in the fall of '2000 that these new HX series were due to arrive shortly so I waited until they did. I was pleased that the improvements were issues that I was concerned about. First, the video input cycling is faster and the inputs can be selected directly without cycling. The remote is improved with a backlight and can control any make of Sat RX, VCR, DVD, and 2 audio devices(I control a CD player and HT receiver).

There was also technological improvements to the set, such as horizontal and vertical pixel doubling, and vertical compression at 1080i to keep up with Sony's HS10 series HDTV sets.

On the convenience side, picture settings can be stored for individual inputs, the menu display is improved and is coloured. There are 2 HD inputs and 3 composite/s-video inputs. The picture quality on regular analog cable was better than I expected and the TV will display two different groups of nine cable channels at a time strobed on the screen. Great for cable surfing. Also has V-chip and channel lock-out, etc.

The set is built very solidly with a flat top that will take more equipment on it than the Sony HS10 sets. I have a receiver, center channel, DVD and CD player on it and it moves around easily on it's castors.

The video quality on this 55HX70 set coupled with a Toshiba SD6200 progressive scan DVD is breathtaking and looks like a film image from the movie theatres. I can only imagine what this TV would look like with a true high definition signal.
I don't regret buying a 4:3 screen as I feel it displays all format sizes with no stretching or compression artifacts that I've seen on 16:9 screens. The price of 4:3 sets are also lower than 16:9 sets too.

After 3 months, the set is still working and looking great. With all that this set is capable of and at the price you can get these, I would recommend these HX series without hesitation. My only regret is that the 61" wouldn't fit down my basement stairs, so I had to settle for the 55", which looks fairly large where it's located 12 feet from the recliner.

So what are you waiting for...go and buy one today!

Fantastic Picture

Weakness:

none so far

I was always very skeptical about rear-projection TVs having poor picture (having watched my dad's old 50 inch Mitsubishi). However, I am so impressed with the picture quality on this tv. In my dark basement, it's like having my own movie theater. I'm going to love this tv. (even more so when I get it hooked up to HDTV signal). Highly recomended.

Weakness:

digital artifacts, inputs cannot be accessed directly throught the remote

I have spent a few months looking for a RPTV in the $2,000-$3,000 range. I narrowed my search to Toshiba, Sony and Hitachi. I had the opportunity to do side-to-side comparison between those sets in a few different places. The Hitachi was OK, the Sony made the best first impression but I liked the Toshiba the most after careful evaluation. Side-to-side with the (more expensive) Sony, in two different stores, the Toshiba had more balanced and detailed image, while the Sony image was flickering. The extra two inches in diagonal and the lower price made my choice easy. At home this set worked much better than in store, and to my surprise, the cable channels look much better than I expected, in fact some of them have more detail than many of the DirecTV channels. The video noise on the cable channels is well controlled by the noise reduction circuit. The biggest downside are the digital artifacts, some of them are due to my satellite receiver and DVD player but I believe that the TV set itself contributes something to that as well. They were noticeable on much more expensive HDTV sets in the store but they were less noticeable on the 53" Sony, which was the only advantage that the Sony had. Overall, this is an excellent set for the price and I would choose it over other models even for $6-700 more. I do not have a HDTV source at home but in the store the Toshiba's HDTV picture, with the black horizontal stripes, looked better than the picture on $1,000+ more expensive wide screen Pioneer and Mitsubishi (yes, I know that this is impossible).
