Strength:

32XBR100 I love this television. It has inputs and outputs galore. Watching DVD on it is an experience of its own. Everything is vivid and crisp.

Weakness:

Remote is not illuminated. Price is kinda high. This thing is heavy!

For a 32 inch television, the Wega is a good deal. The only problem is that I wish that I held out for the newer model but hey I needed a television and the price was right. I guess while watching DVD in 16X9 mode, on the newer Wega the screen is streched out to fill in more of the gaps from the bottom to the top of the picture. That would be neat but not worth the 500.00 price difference from my 32XBR 100.

I saw the competition: JVC, Zenith, and Mitsubishi. Sony had the most bang for the buck, everything considering.

Strength:

It looks cool.

Weakness:

Picture distortion at the edges. Beware before you buy.

Time to blow the wistle on this one, cause Sony's doing consumers a real disservice with this product.

I have now seen several of these TVs in stores and in someone's apartment, and in every case the picture gets distorted toward the left and right sides of the screen. Specifically, the picture looks curved in a concave kind of way. My wife also noticed this, and it was annoying enough that I knew I could never live with this picture.(Dustin Montgomery also noted this in his review below).

I asked an ISF-certified video guy if I was crazy, and he absolutely agreed with my observation. He told me that direct view picture tubes are curved, and that Sony has not bothered to fully correct for this curvature in the translation to a flat screen(he actually questions whether this is possible at all). According to him, Sony has admitted this but has no plans to correct it in the near future, and maybe they can't.

His take on it is that Sony threw this product on the market knowing that people would be attracted to it due to its styling and the flat screen. It certainly seems to be working, but I would strongly encourage anyone considering these Wega sets take a close look at what I'm talking about before buying. Unless you enjoy "Walleye Vision" or own stock in Bristol Meyers(makers of Excedrin, the headache medicine), I can't see why anyone would buy this product with this obvious defect(other aspects of the set seem OK, but in my view this is a fatal flaw). I think Sony is using their name and marketing muscle(can you say Bose?)to push this product on consumers, and I for one think less of Sony as a company for doing it.(By the way, I own an older 32" Sony set with their vertically flat screen, and I'm pretty happy with it).

I know other manufacturers have versions of flat screens(Panasonic comes to mind, and someone mentioned Zenith below), but I have not seen them and don't know if they suffer from the same problem. This is my first negative review of anything on this site and I am not enjoying doing it, but I feel strongly that people should be alerted to this important information before plunking down a good amount of money on these overgrown fishbowls. To those who own these sets and are enjoying them I say great, but to those who are considering one of these sets it is my hope that this information is at least somewhat helpful in making your decision.

I have a Sony KV32FD-1 as the center of my home cinema. You cannot see a better picture in your home at the moment. The worlds only 100% flat widescreen gives no reflection and is outstanding. Picture in Picture is great. Dual tuners etc etc.. this baby has the works. Sell your house and buy one.

Strength:

Picture, Sound.

Weakness:

Lack of third scart of second scart with RGB.

I have KV-32FX20. Picture the best I have seen on any TV. Makes the most of Digital TV and DVD. Minimal artifacts. Sound most respectable. Additional scarts/component inputs would have been nice. No point in wasting time looking at other makes. Note that all WEGA TV's have scored very highly in independent tests performed by the consumers' association UK. So don't believe anyone who tells you these TV's are not worth every pence or cent!!!

Strength:

Pic quality (with the right input).

Weakness:

Quirkyness here and there.

Over all quality is what I expected out of a TV in this pricerange, with the right kind of inputs (dvd vs direcTV vs. cable), huge differences can be seen. I have KV32FS13, and I know this type of sensitivity in the higher XBR model line is even higher, so buyer be aware, "feed junk, you get junk", make sure the majority of your TV watching will consist of good signal inputs.

I keep hearing "service menu", could someone explain to me what it is, and how to get to it? Only ajustting thing I've done is "tilt", where is this "horizontal sizing" etc type of things? Thanks!

I purchased a Sony 36" VEGA XBR200 in May of this year, with a manufacture date of April, 1999. I could not be more pleased with the purchase (especially considering Circuit City initially incorrectly ordered and delivered the wrong size; to make up for the mistake, they gave me the 36" XBR model for a 32" non-XBR price). I hope that the earlier, horrible reviews apply only to the older models (manufactured before March of 1999), and that the particular model I have continues to perform so well. As the previous post in this thread noted - it is quite amazing to watch television on a 100% flat screen.
By the way, Sony just began listing the new XBR250 models at their website. In addition to correcting some of the problems that have plagued other purchasers of the 200XBRs, the 250 series provides for a 16x9 compression feature that is supposed to take advantage of anamorphic widescreen DVD presentations.

The geometry on these sets are good. The line doubled HDTV WS version looks much better then the others. I am fairly dissapointed in the lack of 16x9 switch, the aliasing, and the blacks. It seems to have a high black level cut off and with out an extremely high end source the tv looks edgy and garbled. The colors looked fine out of the box but nithing to brag about. The flat screen is very nice. I feel these are expensive, feature lacked TVs, that come in only slightly above average against direct view sets. It seems Sony had a nice little innovation with these, but they look strange and they're overpriced.Quality: 3, Value: 3

I just recently purchased the 36" television in august from circuit city for $1600. This is not the worlds only 100% flat screen at this time - Zenith just came out with one a couple of weeks after the fact...anyways on to the screen. The screen looks very nice considering it's a new technology having a flat screen on a tube rather than LCD. There are some flaws on the edges of the screen, (kind of looks like the glass gets thicker towards edge) And to make one thing clear, If the TV is in the view of sunlight coming through the window there "IS" a glare and reflection whether it's a flat screen or curved screen. The Audio farely good with the SRS and Simulation modes and the (I believe 6 speakers?) Anyways, the sound quality really doesn't matter, cause you should be using you stereo and a center channel to replace the tv dialog. The remote control is descent, it took me about an hour to be fully familiar with it - and the glow buttons don't work worth a crap at night time. I do like the fact that Sony has the TV's availible in Champhane gold and silver, rather than the usual black. This TV is very heavy considering its size, but that just show quality and that they didn't you cheap plastic. PIP works well with the freeze and zoom and ect.. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. Picture=4.5 sound=3

Strength:

Extremely bright, crisp, clear picture.

Weakness:

Something's not right here--hard to figure out what it is.

I don't own a WEGA, but have been shopping for a new TV. I have been happy with older Sony sets, and wanted to like this new generation, but something isn't right with the image. I'm not sure if the previous reviewer is correct that the image is distorted in the corners--I didn't notice that quality myself. I thought the entire image itself was too crisp. I know that sounds ridiculous, but all I can say is that watching this TV is not pleasurable or relaxing. Just like any purchase, don't buy it just because it's the newest thing. Judge for yourself.

Strength:

flat screen,excellent colors,features

Weakness:

almost too detailed,concave screen,

It's a good idea but I'm not sold on it yet.The images (especially on dvd) are too defined. I also notice vertical lines on the screen and a distorted concave look to the screen(maybe you get used to it aftr awhile) .Sony, as always, has done an excellent job marketing the tv and it is a great picture overall but, I wouldn't buy it.
